100,000 Maniacs
This staff blog started up in December 2002. Since its debut, Reason staffers have posted over 5,000 entries.
Sometime over the past 24 hours, somebody posted the 100,000th comment to Hit & Run.
Thanks to all posters--good, bad, and ugly--for participating in this forum.

Quite surprisingly, I am directly or indirectly involved in 0.5% of those comments.
Yeah, I've been meaning to mention to you, Lonewacko: pick up the pace!
Lonewacko,
What is a "fristina jam" and why did you invite Art Bell to it?
I shall do my best to help us reach 200,000 comments!
What he means is that he'll post here as much as he can when he isn't distracted by those gay porn sites that he frequents.
Not that I'm complaining. He seems to regard me as a way to "prove" his heterosexuality, and the less time he spends "proving" the better off I am.
Hey, Santorum, you are a sick puppy with that "frothy mixture".
I`m looking foward to high quality black market porn.
Nothing guarantees quality better than a government-created black market! Rest assured, the mafia dons pulling my strings will get you all the good stuff after I outlaw porn.
For a price, of course...
My math was way off. There have been about 4000 posts here since I started monitoring, er, reading H&R. That means out of eight threads, you can get Lonewacko enlightenment on one of them.
As for the "fristina jam," "jam i jam" is/was the name of a Persian-language TV show, and "noo rooz" is Persian new year. The rest of the words are made up, although I image I could do a better job of fake Persian.
Just out of curiousity how many of those comments included links offering to increase the size of hit and run?
I have a stupid question - why's there a link to H&R in this entry? I mean, we're here already, right?
good question j.
Gerard Van der Leun,
Spam to increase the "size" of Hit and Run?
You put into focus why Homo "so-called" Sapiens is the most deadly animal.
We need to evolve into more running and less hitting.

Err...I'm not sure exactly how Gerard meant it, but I took his comment as a joke about all of the fine penis-enhancing products that are conveniently made available to us in our e-mail inboxes every day. Maybe I've just got winkies on the brain, but it seemed like a harmless joke to me.
How did you interpret it?
So do the dodecaduple posts count in that 100k? If so, Jennifer may be a quarter of that volume alone. 🙂

Do all parties turn into Libertarians when in opposition? The New York Times thinks so. Libertarian, in the sense that no laws are good laws....
If only this little pop up window wasn't an absolute piece of crap!
FIX THIS! IT SUCKS! GIVE US A REAL INTERFACE!
Jennifer: It would have been funnier to type it once and post it 14 times.
I continue to love this website! In fact, it is because of Hit & Run that I got a subscription to Reason!
The format is great, it's simple and effective! Don't change a thing if you can help it!
Keep up the great work & good job on the 100k comments!
yeah, but I'm betting she didn't have three hours to kill...
That was aimed at how long it usually takes to post to H&R, if ya didn't get it.
j,
I got it, but I'm trying to point out that at the "deeper" level, enlargement is really about hitting.
Would it be mean for me to point out that the figure provided is, like, 12 Atrios threads.
Of course, half those comments consist of "First!"
The lesson?
Blogs that don't allow for comments on the grounds that the great unwashed will post tons of ignorant drivel for every insightful comment may be missing the point.
On the purely self interested front, I find value in the Cheers-ification of the medium. You can come here, where eveyone knows your name, and grumble at/with other personalities.
Really, the value of this style is greater than that, though. Stories here are not delivered from the mouths of potentates to be appreciated or not by a passive audience. The shading of the story, the assumptions of the story, and even the facts of the story evolve and gain sophistication when a member of the audience responds to the story and then to other responses. The most one can expect to get out of a newspaper op ed is the uncontested view of the author, but the story here is never just the initial post. A whole separate dimension is also conveyed in how someone like joe views in contrast with how I view it in contrast with the take of Our Man from France.
I can't help but think we know something about the character of a writer who is willing to submit thoughts to the public at large for real time critique. For all you Old Guard, Dan Rather news types out there, I offer a note of caution. The story isn't yours anymore - it's ours.
