After 9 pm eastern, it becomes the "thot plickens," but don't mind me.

What's up with all these sages of ethics? That guy with the New York Times Magazine gives me an uncontrollable urge to puke on his vest.

There's no doubt there are a lot of people smarter than I and more ethical than I, but they would be more ethical if they would just bug off.

I know. I know. The deeper subplot here is that Dubya is using ethics like most folks use voting: to shame me into altering my atrocious manners/ anti-social behaviour, not to mention make my breath kissing sweet.

Certainly, history is filled with Good and Noble things done in accordance with the Wisdom of Repugnance.

That phrase will haunt me in my bed at night.

Please, H&R, give me something hopeful, pure and true. I can no longer live with the crushing pain of modern life.

This has worked out as badly for the administration as the invitation to the White House extended to American poets...who predictably were going to bash the President and the war. Conservative administrations never benefit from this sort of "dialogue", and should just spare the tax-payers a couple of bucks.

As someone watching loved ones suffer from diabetes (one of the many diseases curable by embryonic stem cells in rats), I can only pray November comes quickly.

This whole ethics industry is a joke. Has any ethics panel ever created a report antithetical to political entity that created it? I strongly doubt it.

The stem cell debate is a particularly dubious use of an ethics advisory panel because the debate centers on an axiomatic definition of human life. If one believes axiomatically that a a single cell zygote constitutes a human being then one must ethically oppose the research regardless of the possible benefit to other people. If one believes a single cell zygote isn't a human being then possible benefit to the suffering of humans trumps whatever animalistic rights such a minimal life-form might have.

For anybody, on either side, to strike a moral pose and claim they represent the side of rational a-political thought is deceitful. Everybody's mind was made up before they walked into the room.

I don't think things are quite as bad as Shannon suggests, but I will have to leap on further criticism of both Kass and the way many bioethicists handle their craft. Blackburn's description of Kass is dead on. There's a quotation widely associated with him that goes something like this: "Shallow is the soul that forgets how to shutter."
Kass is the man who shuttered when, in the late 70's, people first contemplated and carried out the first test-toub baby. I think the fact that he denounced it with such purely (and, for his part, admittedly) emotionalist fervor illustrates that Kass's emotions are on the wrong side of history. But the thing that is appalling is that what Kass does is not labelled "theology" or "opinion," but "philosophy." Although there are a lot of philosophers (especially bioethicists) out there who think that it's perfectly legitimate to defend one's views by appealing to one's own intuitions, most real philosophers use this thing called "logic," and construct coherent "arguments." My big worry here - as arguably one of the most prominant philosophers (and ethicists) in the country, Leon Kass is giving us real ethical philosophers a bad name.

There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.
