So, guys, remember that from now on, the ugly guy at the gay bar is probably a narc, because the cops won't make the same mistake again.

  2. Jason Ligon   21 years ago

His mirrored shades so manly, his moustache trimmed to cop-o-rific perfection.

    Egad ...

  3. Stephen Douglas   21 years ago

Once again, this nonsense happens in the south!

  4. jon b.   21 years ago

    What! No picture?

I was anxious to see what a cop so pretty it causes people to commit crimes looked like.

  5. dhex   21 years ago

yo, that's a lot of work to go through for a single drug bust.

they really must be making money hand over fist on this shit.

  6. Mr. Moose   21 years ago

Stop the presses! Captain Kangaroo has died!

  7. Brian   21 years ago

SD--south Florida is not "the south".

  8. Jake   21 years ago

Hmmm. I wonder if this is precident setting for prostitution sweeps?

Me: "Sorry, Your Honor, Officer Bambi was so hot I couldn't help myself!"

Johnny Cochrane: "She's a sweet little miss, you must dismiss!"

Judge: "yup, she's a betty alright, case dismissed"

    Naaaaaah.

  9. Paul   21 years ago

From the details of the case, it does seem to be a clear case of entrapment. The fact the cop is hot is just a side issue of interest.

  10. Evan McElravy   21 years ago

    >>SD--south Florida is not "the south".

"Close enough for any Yankee's purposes."

But only Yankees and Cuban exiles live there.

  12. J   21 years ago

    Evan,

Sure, the same way the Northeast is just an extension of Canada, for any South Floridian's purposes.

"As they talked, Nahum asked Blanco for cocaine at least three times.

Blanco said that he refused and on the third occasion got so annoyed that he started to leave.

The officer asked Blanco to stay and, according to court records, said, "Come on, can you get me some?" Blanco testified that he was still very interested in Nahum because he was a very handsome guy."

OK that's entrapment in my book no matter what the guy looked like. I think it's total bullshit for a court to rule that this is entrapment because the guy was so attractive no one could resist him. That strikes me as the equivalent of a rapist saying, the victim was asking for it with the way she dressed and her hair and makeup and all, and he can't be held accountable for raping her because no man could resist her feminine wiles.

  14. Stephan Douglas   21 years ago

I'd rather be mistaken for living in a part of canada than for living in a part of the ignorant, intolerant, south!

The only Yankees down there are the ones too dumb to know how to vote for Gore instead of Buchanan!

  15. Warren   21 years ago

I spent half a year in Tampa, and another half a year in Orlando, and while half the population consists of tourists and transplants, the other half consists of native southern illiterate redneck assholes. Florida is definitely a southern state.

  16. sam   21 years ago

Count me in too, Florida is the south! Any governor that can plunge the voter rolls of minorities and minority sounding names close to an election is definitely a governor of a southern state or Idaho!

  17. Sam I Was   21 years ago

OK, while I agree it's a mildly interesting and amusing story -- a "brite" as they'd say in the journalism biz -- I don't understand the accompanying commentary by Hit & Run poster Jesse Walker:

"So how come this is never an issue on TV?"

Could someone explain what that means?

    Thank you in advance.

  18. Brian   21 years ago

Sometimes I don't know who gets it worse around here...southerners or the French.

Nothing says "ignorant and intolerant" quite like pigeonholing a geographic region larger than most countries. Someone please reassure me you guys are playing the bigot for laughs. Seriously.

Lord knows there aren't any "illiterate redneck assholes" outside the former Confederate states, though I could have sworn I've run into them all over the country. They must have all been tourists from Mississippi.

  19. only ed   21 years ago

    Warren,

    You seem to have lived...everywhere!
Round, round, get around, you get around!

Here in Beautiful Boca, there are Cotton Tops and Boca Brats. No Rednecks. There's an ordinance, dontcha know.

  20. SteveInClearwater   21 years ago

How come it's never on TV? Well, because for the most part, all TV potrayals of cops who do drug work show cops who must stick to the rules and they always do, though they might have moments of moral crisis for dramatic effect.

IN REAL LIFE, drug cops can't operate with long term success (success defined by arrests and related seizures) and be consistently honest in applying the rules and the Constitution.

Only THE SHIELD on FX Network is honest enough to show cops who violate laws in drug war related work and the storyline thru 2 seasons has the primary characters getting more and more off the edge, suggesting the writers may continue the honesty and show the guys going down.

Well, as much as cops can be brought down for violating such rules in the pursuit of the drug war.

OTOH, the other genre of police related TV shows are usually based on homicide/violent crime law enforcement, and the officers are more often shown to be honest, since enforcement that does not come with a potential for ASSET FORFEITURE is far less likely to be derailed from the Integrity Railroad.

  21. SteveInClearwater   21 years ago

"...the other genre of police related TV shows..."

Oops, that implies there's only two genres. There is of course a third genre, the 'Reality' shows which follow cops around and they follow the rules, BUT they also routinely push the limits by inappropriate questioning of people, combined with those people being ignorant of basic civil rights....Shown and viewed often enough by same pool of population and they begin to believe in an artificial set of rules.

Primary myth thus shown is: Anytime a Cop Asks You a Question, You Must Reply.

  22. SteveInClearwater   21 years ago

As a 37 year native of Texas working on his sixth year in Florida, I would submit that I've seen a decent percentage of redneck racist assholes north of Mason Dixon line.

Though most days I perceive the comparison with more optimism, remembering some whimsical advice from Peter McWilliams.

He suggested that, "There's really only a few REAL assholes in the world. But they move around ALOT, so take care"

  23. SteveInClearwater   21 years ago

Obviously my favorite H&R Topic thread this year to date...heh

  24. Jesse Walker   21 years ago

I don't understand the accompanying commentary by Hit & Run poster Jesse Walker: "So how come this is never an issue on TV?" Could someone explain what that means?

It's because those TV cops are so dang handsome.

(I'm not defending it, I'm just explaining it. Just because I make a joke doesn't mean I can't realize later on that it's kinda lame.)

  25. ?   21 years ago

Has it occured to any of you that - given the rampant identity theft happening herein - this site is less a forum of ideas than a lab experiment by Reason editors who are having some fun at your expense?

  26. Unreal   21 years ago

    Aaaaaaaaaahhh!

  27. J   21 years ago

"... part of the ignorant, intolerant, south!"

Who could ever confuse you for ignorant? After all, you speak as if you actually know what you're talking about. Or for that matter for a Southerner, some of the most courteous people I have met while travelling. Nah, with that attitude and the range of knowledge, I would have to guess you are a New Yorker. Of course, I could just group you in with the rest of the people from other states up there, but then I would be doing the same thing you are. And neither of us would want that confusion to happen would we?

p.s. there is no personality difference between those that "were too dumb to vote" correctly down here, and many New Yorkers I have met while up there.

  28. Will Spencer   21 years ago

This is just a friendly reminder that this is all because we're engaging in the senseless and unwinnable War on Drugs.

    Thank you.

  29. jon b.   21 years ago

Jessie, don't be so hard on yourself. I got it. Except for NYPDBlue nobody looks like any of the cops I ever met.
