New at Reason: Your suspicions that Julian Sanchez is a former debating team dork are now confirmed, as he provides a mordant post-mortem of the State of the Union and the Democrats' response.

But it's probably also got something to do with the urine-testing and steroid business. You don't put a kazoo solo in a Wagner opera, and you don't bring up penny-ante stuff like this in the State of the Union address.

    Classic.

you seem to have developed a stutter when you say the phrase "weapons of mass destruction"?... Speaking of which: "weapons of mass destruction-related program activities"? Is that like a simulation fruit-flavored juice drink?

But, sort of like the 4th generation.... as in; New,New,New Coke
    Check it out:

March 2003: Weapons of mass destruction.

June 2003: Weapons of mass destruction programs.

October 2003: Weapons of mass destruction-related programs.

January 2004: Weapons of mass destruction-related program activities.

George Bush's speaking style may make us nostalgic for Bill Clinton.

Bush's agenda makes me nostalgic for Ronald Reagan:

Average annual real increases in domestic discretionary spending:

    Ronald Reagan 1982-89 -1.3%

    George W. Bush 2002-04 8.2%

Source: Club for Growth, based on U.S. Budget, Historical Tables, 2004 (From WSJ Tuesday, January 20, 2004 Editorial)

Your suspicions that Julian Sanchez is a former debating team dork are now confirmed ...

He's no longer on the debating team?

Speaking as someone who hasn't watched a SotU address in 4 years, I can say...yep, that's why. The messages are insultingly bland and it usually interrupts a rerun of The Simpsons.

Besides, all the post-mortems like this are much more informative as to what the issues relate to; even if they are as irreverant as Dubya building on the Ephedra ban. The Westworld robots the Dems fielded sputtered to remind people they are still around sound as out of place as McGovern embracing Clark. It's a bad sign when the DNC chair has to broadcast "we're as strong as ever" when they visibly have no unity of purpose.

Here's to 4 more years of Skull & Bones.

Wow Julian both pedantic and snarky!!! I love it!!! Seriously, very good editorial. Remind me not to bother arguing with you about anything, okay?

    Regards,

    Steve

As soon as Julian mention APDA on here, suspicions were confirmed.

I think the speech is being over-interpreted as an election year campaign speech. Actually the President delivered the same sort of address he gives in off years-- a push for his legislative agenda. By tradition, an incumbent president isn't supposed to start his campaign until the opposition chooses its candidate. A custom more honared in the breach by Democrats, but Republicans take these process matters more seriously (they really do).

I liked the line "But your deft use of the 'but wait, there's more' technique:"

Because every SOTU address always gives the feeling I'm going to hear "Now how much would you pay?"

"weapons of mass destruction-related program activities"

    That seems like a Clinton-like phrase. 🙂

  12. Swamp Justice   21 years ago

Shouldn't that be "Remember to Breathe"? Breath is a noun.

    Rick Barton is right on!
Although I wonder if W didn't have some subtle intent in his annoying droning on of programs he recommends for making US even greater. I was so annoyed by the time he got to Fed-funded public school drug testing that I switched off altogether and completely missed the Demo-drones. Intended? Sounds like he needn't have gone to that effort, however.
