Present Shock
The kindly folks at Crooked Timber remind me I've got to go see Good-bye, Lenin! as soon as it comes to the U.S. The premise is that a young East Berliner's mother falls into a coma just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. When she comes-to, the doctor warns him that any serious shock could do her in… and so he's forced to go to amusing lengths to persuade her that they're still living under a communist dictatorship. Good buzz so far. The North American rights have been picked up by Sony Classic, but there's no release date yet.

I don't think there's an official US release date for this movie and there isn't one for the DVD either. But this is a good time to plug Netflix.com... it's a DVD rental service that works through the mail... you pay a monthly subscription fee, and they'll make sure you always have three DVDs in your hands or in transit (each time you send one back, they send you another one from your list). They have just about every movie DVD ever made and a bunch of ones for TV shows and documentaries too. It's a great thing for anyone who likes movies.
They have Good-bye, Lenin listed there without any info about a release date. Nevertheless, it's on my queue and as soon as it comes out, I'll be able to get it.... ahhh, don't have to worry about remembering to see it:)
Saw the film here in Bp. Pretty good, but not as good as the trailers promised but still worthwhile.
I sent this story to the folks at Hit n' Run several months ago; now you are finally getting around to it.
I wonder how much of the movie depends on inside jokes that Americans won't get.
Feel free to start your own weblog, JB, if you don't feel that H&R is jumping high enough at your command.
Rip van Winkle rides again.
Opens February 27, 2004 in New York. You're welcome to sleep on my couch that weekend... 🙂
