Damn. I thought this thread was going to be about the Spice Girls. Oh well...Bananarama are better anyway. Cuter too. Well, back in their day for sure. With the exception of Posh Spice...She's also truly "hot"...Boomers read "foxy".

    Violate your television

No. A lot of noisy synthesizers played by guys with big lips. Duran Duran was the zenith of its badness.

Dude, you're just getting old, take it easy. There are people out there who feel the same way about the bubblegum music of the late '60s.

  4. Douglas Fletcher   22 years ago

Besides, the girls are always cute.

Until New Wave came on to my radar in 1979,about at it's inception, I only listened to classical music and 60s oldies. I Kinda gave up on current
tunes. But, "the wave" just blew me away.

As for the girls, check out the the brunette in Human League, Dale Bozzio (HER name) from Missing Persons and all three of the Bananarama girls.
I know all of this quite subjective but I really enjoy listening to Duran Duran tunes. Are you sure you weren't just jealous because the girls thought they were so hot?

Hey; Mick Jagger has big lips too.

  6. Douglas Fletcher   22 years ago

Most English rock guys have big lips, don't you get it?

Besides, most of what you're calling New Wave was really techno or new romantic, basically a couple of bumps down the road past New Wave.

Like I said, you're just getting old, give it up.

  7. Douglas Fletcher   22 years ago

Besides, when Duran Duran came around, the girls who thought they were so hot were around 13, & I was well into my mid-20s by then. Getting crowded out of the action for 13 year olds wasn't a cause of much grief for me by then.

  8. Rick Barton   22 years ago

Although these genre classifications are not as precise as biology and do overlap, I've never heard any of the bands I listed called "techno",
while almost all have songs on "New Wave" compilations.

I'm not the only one who enjoys it. The term "Retro" has just about become a synonym for 80's New Wave on radio stations and in clubs, so persistent is it's popularity.

  9. Rick Barton   22 years ago

Well, I know it's of topic but does anybody else here like New Wave music a lot?... Missing Persons, Human League, Blondie, Devo, David Bowie, Kajagoogoo, Gogo's, Softsell, Culture Club, Thompson Twins, Bananarama, A Flock of Seagulls, Gary Numan, Berlin, Vapors, Wall of Voodoo, The Cars, Duran Duran, Modern English, Thomas Dolby, etc, etc, etc.

The genera seems like a very special phenomenon to me; hyper-creative with lots of appealing style and verve; very fun and the girls were really cute as well!

I can remember going to see Bananarama in university. Front row was an eye opening experience, as the Customs officers had obviously siezed the girls delicates at the airport. Strange , but wonderful, that they had not yet found the time to purchase more. Sigh.
