Emancipating Hard Drives
Eric Canuteson, whose real estate investment company is registered as a Los Angeles County vendor, reports receiving the following notice the other day from Joe Sandoval, manager of purchasing and contract services at the county's Internal Services Department:
The County of Los Angeles actively promotes and is committed to ensure a work environment that is free from any discriminatory influence be it actual or perceived. As such, it is the County's expectation that our manufacturers, suppliers and contractors make a concentrated effort to ensure that any equipment, supplies or services that are provided to County departments do not possess or portray an image that may be construed as offensive or defamatory in nature.
One such recent example included the manufacturer's labeling of equipment where the words ''Master/Slave'' appeared to identify the primary and secondary sources. Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label.
We would request that each manufacturer, supplier and contractor review, identify and remove/change any identification or labeling of equipment or components thereof that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature before such equipment is sold or otherwise provided to any County department. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and assistance.
As Canuteson notes, Master/Slave is a standard designation not only for involuntary servitude (and kinky sexual relationships) but also for computer components. L.A. County presumably also frowns on references to "male" and "female" plumbing and electrical parts.

*LOL*
I perceive Los Angeles County as discriminatory. Please remove it from itself.
You have to admit, that's a pretty dumb term.
No, discriminatory would be "WhiteMaster/DarkieSlave."
it's not a dumb term at all. It precisely describes the interraction between two devices where one (the master) controls all access, communications and sharing of resources between itself and the other (the slave). this is standard engineering terminology in many applications.
Ah yes, the male-dominent world of engineers and their witty selves. Here's another one that the LA County PC police would just love: The resistor color code.
Black
Brown
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Violet
Gray
White
'Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly.'
or if the cable to the master was white and the cable to the slave was black. That'd be discriminatory, too.
And I think Master/Slave is more accurate technically than "primary and secondary source."
The other thing that's silly about this is that those terms have been around for a long time. They're just now noticing them? Think of all the people that have been offended before this brave stance was taken! Oh, the humanity!
Perhaps they'd be happier if it were changed to Bureaucrat/Citizen.
I've been staring at this for 20 minutes tyring to think of way to make fun of this but its so stupid on its own its not possible.
I guess they have to remove all labelling, because any names could be interpretted as offensive by some idiot somewhere.
California continues to amuse.
I work for a guvmint agency and I just heard that we can't use the term "flip charts" because, apparently, "flip" is derogatory towards Phillipinos (sp?).
From now on, I'm going to call them "honky pads", since a lot more honkies use them then flips.
joe:
Is Depeche Mode's "Master and Servant" a dumb song?
Actually, a lot of hard drive manufacterers stopped referring to them as master/slave years ago in favor of primary/secondary , for just this reason.
Steve in CO: We once drove a very white electronics teacher damn near to the point of vaporlock with the resistor values. "Why black gotta be zero and brown 1, but white is nine? Huh, teach?" Stupid, but funny.
It's a great song, largely because of the way it plays, knowingly, on the cultural connotations of the terms.
The really funny thing here is that given that the industry is not going to change perfectly good and long standing terminology for the sake of one municipal purchasing officer, eventually Los Angeles county is going to start an affirmative action program for preferring particular computers based on a superficial considerations.
The request was probably written by someone who thought it was as stupid as it sounds. Optimistically, it was a nerdy bureaucrat making a point against excessive interference. Or at least a seasoned bureacrat who has learned "cover your ass".
"I work for a guvmint agency and I just heard that we can't use the term "flip charts" because, apparently, "flip" is derogatory towards Phillipinos (sp?)."
Some good anarchists somewhere whould start a campaign to start calling [insert racial group here] "governments" or "states." The government would just negate itself!
It turns me on when Master LA denies my identity.
Would "pimp and ho" be construed as offensive or defamatory in nature? I didn't like master/slave either so I relabeled mine with more up to date terms. However, my ho drive has been on the skids lately, even after a couple of bitch slaps. I'll have to hire some computer geek to the ho a good work over.
They should change the designations to Dom/Sub.
maybe next they'll complain about computer games that have a "god mode"
All I can say is that this is fucking ridiculous. Government employees obviously have WAY too much free time to be sitting around worrying about crap like this.
One word: NEWSPEAK
Maybe LA really understands "client-server", such as how equitable their water contracts with client counties upstate work out.
I used to work for a software company that used the same terminology to describe database servers. The Master was the everyday server, the Slave was the failover server that would take over if the Master went offline. We eventually renamed the servers "Primary" and "Secondary" which, PC (no pun!) considerations aside, was a more accurate description of the system.
All I can say is that this is fucking ridiculous. Government employees obviously have WAY too much free time to be sitting around worrying about crap like this.
Well, I'd wager that they're not reading H&R all afternoon.
"Actually, a lot of hard drive manufacterers stopped referring to them as master/slave years ago in favor of primary/secondary , for just this reason."
Did you just make that up?. I think Western Digital, Seagate, IBM, and Maxtor all use Master/Slave or some form of it. See:
http://support.wdc.com/techinfo/general/jumpers.asp
http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/di
sc/troubleshoot_master_slave.html
I'd say, without doing any research (because its not necessary apparently), that probably represents 90% of the worlds drives.
In the computer drive connection world "primary/secondary" is already used for something else. Most every PC sold today has, at the very least, a primary IDE channel to which you can connect one master and one slave device and a secondary IDE channel that works the same way.
This master/slave terminology is used on CD-ROM/DVD-ROM devices as well.
I think we should stop using the term "field", as in "magnetic field", because the word can be mentally (retardedly) associated with slavery.
LOL at anon 2:41
a work environment that is free from any discriminatory influence be it actual or perceived.
that just says it all, doesn't it? california, meet orwell.
"honky pads"
lmmfao!... oh, wait, is my laughter being perceived as discriminatory? i'd better stop...
It's kind of sad that I can no longer remember a time when this kind of anecdote suprised me.
Huh. Of Filipinos I know, "flip" has never been used in any seemingly derogatory manner.
Maybe it's *looks over shoulder* their "N"-word.
probably represents 90% of the worlds drives
The terms are largely interchangeable because at the level of their functional importance, any synonym suffices. Primary and secondary, however, are not strictly the same as Master and Slave. Primary and Secondary IDE, for instance, generally refer to two separate IDE interfaces. Master and slave refer to two channels on the same interface.
We should outlaw putting chains on tires in heavy snow. After all, that might serve to remind black pedestrians and drivers that once their ancestors were in chains.
Eric Canuteson - a fine Nordic name! 🙂 Where is drf when we need him? 🙂
Joe2: I may be mistaken as to the current verbage on any given manufacturer's drive, but I have WD and Quantum (which i believe is now part of Seagate) hard drives in my possession with the jumper positions labeled "Primary/Single" and "Secondary". Maybe someone decided it wasn't worth the hassle and/or confusion. Maybe I was hallucinating. In any case, I stand corrected.
on the flip-side: i just asked my aunt about it (she's phillipino, obviously) and she said she'd never heard it, and she's been in america for 15 years now.
is there a primary source for this story, btw? i mean, it's stupid enough to be true, but it sounds like satire as well.
About all I can say is that this is fucking ridiculous. Do the employees of LA government really have enough free time to come up with this stuff? Whats worse, that someone actually complained about this, or that someone took that complaint seriously. I don't know which is worse.
the last HD i installed (maxtor 120gb) about three weeks ago had master/slave as well as cable select options.
A lot of large companys have several different people or teams working on their technical documentation, so it's possible that both terms are used interchangably by the same company, even on a single product. I've seen the same thing with directory/folder.
steve in co, you just made this aspiring electrical engineers day.
WARNING: COMPUTER PROGRAMMER HUMOR TO FOLLOW...
One of my programmer-coworkers was writing a distributed system about a year ago which had a master/slave concept. Being a sensitive guy *snicker* he made out all the design documents using the names "lord" and "serfs". When a problem occurs with the lord computer, the next serf in line of succession sends a network message to the others that he is usurping the throne.
I didn't say it was funny...
Probably they'll want to get rid of ASCII next. After all, that's the *American* Standard Code for Information Interchange, and it might offend other nationalities.
Primary/Secondary won't do at all either. That implies a hierarchical relationship that could make folks lower on the totem feel bad....
If we had installed Ned Roscoe instead of Arnold in Sacramento, "Joe Sandoval, manager of purchasing and contract services at the county's Internal Services Department" would be one of 60,000 state employees draining the system with their ineffectuality who gets a pink slip. Hey, Sandoval, try pulling that kind of shit (with such ease) in the private sector. You'd be scrubbing toilets in a week.
"Hard" drive is obscene and potentially sexist. If you consider your "hard" drive more important than your "soft" ware this discriminates against the impotent.
Let's clean up the language, person-units.
Private citizens can file lawsuits for ~$20 (small claims), up to ~$100-$250. Eventually you'd get declared a vexatious litigant, but filing nuisance suits designed to protest laws like these might be a real good way to bring the PTB to their senses.
LA county's madated removal of the master/slave designation in computer hard drives is an insult to all of us in the S&M community and they must put a stop to it. Isn't that right Mt Slave?
LA county's madated removal of the master/slave designation in computer hard drives is an insult to all of us in the S&M community and they must put a stop to it. Isn't that right Mr. Slave?
Jesus Christ...
Yeah! Is it time for my walkies yet?
Re: the "flip" comment. I'm retired from the US Navy. Back in the late 70's, I was assigned to teach classes called "Navy Rights and Responsibilities" and "Cultural Expression". (I swear I am not making this up.) During our training for teaching these classes, we were told not to use the term "flip chart" because it was derogatory to Filipino's (of which there were many in the USN), nor we were to use the term "blackboard" -- for reasons that should be obvious. We were supposed to say "easel chart" and "chalkboard".
"Plus ca change, plus ce la me me chose."
Whenever issues of PC language come up, I always find myself wondering, "What would George Carlin have to say about all this?"
I take it that LA County has solved its budgeting problems, dramatically lowered crime, and has significantly reduced inefficiencies throughout and can now start focusing on aesthetics. Congratulations LA County!!!
^^^^
Thanks, Jez. This all comes to a nice circle 🙂
Brendan: Please stop using that hurtful and insensitive term when referring to the Autonomous Grand Duchy of Merovingia. I mean, really.
Component, assume the genupectoral position!
Why not verify with them?

"is there a primary source for this story, btw? i mean, it's stupid enough to be true, but it sounds like satire as well."
I'm the primary source. This was actually discussed during a meeting last week. I'll admit, though, that I never heard the term "flip" used in that way, either. I work in Washington, DC, so nothing surprises me.
I've also seen grief over the terms "male" and "female" to describe SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface) cables.
The trouble is... no other term is as easily understandable.
We'll have to switch to saying "inny" and "outy."
Or, everyone could lighten up!
Will
Webmaster: http://www.fortliberty.org
mrniceguy: i meant the original master/slave story.
however, it would be fun for you to ask them for documentation of this problem. i gave my cousin a call yesterday and he also said he'd never heard the term. apparently the old standbys "slant eyes" or "gook" suffice for bigots angry at anyone who appears vaguely asian.
My roommate is Filipino, and his nickname is Flip. I'm pretty sure it's a standard racial epithet.
One more PC anecdote:
A (male) writer friend of mine submitted his story to his (female) editor. The story was boxing-related and used terminology pertinent to that sport, including "ring girl" in describing the typically bikini-clad, placard-carrying, between-rounds entertainment.
She made him change it to "ring woman."
Los Angeles is discriminatory in and of itself, referring, as it does, to angels. I would like to suggest that, henceforth, L.A. be referred to as: STUPIDVILLE. Failing that I would push for the use of: The Autonomous Grand Duchy of Merovingia, in honor of our Gallic friend.
Doggone it people, you're all concentrating on the computer side of things and completely ignoring the harmful and insensitive labeling of the "master" and "slave" brake cylinders of LA county vehicles.
County employees are no doubt raising the hood of assigned vehicles right now and swooning, or feeling stabs of pain around the heart, as they notice the labels. And what about the maintenance folks in the motor pool who are downing tools and rushing to their lawyers, when a thoughtless and brutal supervisor instructs them to add brake fluid to the "master" cylinder?
Take a memo Mr Nice guy.
"All brake maintenance to cease immediately until under-hood labels and language in maintenance manuals can be changed. Mandatory remedial classes to instruct all personnel on nomenclature changes. Holes to be cut in floors of vehicles and drivers to employ "Flintstone" method of braking until remedial action complete."
Let's make it happen people!
Other potentially offensive areas LA needs to consider:
--when adjusting timing in your car, you can no longer describe adjustments as "advance and retard"
--we can't ban "Lap dances" because it refers to Nordic peoples
--we can't refer to them as "bureaucrats" because it offends furniture makers
WELL, THERE GOES MY MASTER'S DEGREE.
There's a cleaned-up version of the resistor color-code mnemonic, with "race" for "rape" and "generally wins" for the last two words.
Speaking of mnemonics, here's one med students use for the cranial nerves:
On old Olympus's towering top, a fat-assed German vaults and hops.
It's very un-PC, as it associates obese people with Nazism.
What is the PC term for fat nowadays? Adiposively challenged?
Just goes to show that this sort of hypersentivity further SEPARATES ethnic groups..NOT unites them.
Next up will be the renaming of thick and thin clients for database apps. We sure don't want to make any fat or skinny people feel bad about themselves (or stupid people for that matter).
I LABELED MY DRIVE TO SAY WHITE MASTER AND NIGGER SLAVE SO I DON'T GET CONFUSED.
"I LABELED MY DRIVE TO SAY WHITE MASTER AND NIGGER SLAVE SO I DON'T GET CONFUSED."
LOL!
well this is all amazingly stupid. I cant beleive this was even brought up. On another note isnt this AGP slot a little discriminatory? I mean only one video card goes in there, any others have to go to the PCI Slots, and all other forms of cards arent even allowed into the AGP slot. It might remind blacks how their ancestors were ruled by an elite few. Now I only need to spray paint my AGP slot to white instead of brown and make the PCI slots black instead of white to insure maximum offensiveness.
Yes, well I am a dealer here in Vegas. I think I heard something about having to change the name of the card game to "AceJack" because "BlackJack" refers to the color of Jack's skin.
Also, I heard many are offended at the new trend towards making computer cases black. The computer is, afterall, a servant or tool to its owner, and many feel that changing the case color from white to black is symbolic and offensive.
California's next step should be to legally define the words "black," "slave," "master," and "denture" as profane and jailable if spoken in a public building.
What a fallacious argument! That person needs to be shot!
And LOL to the Newspeak reference
No wonder Cali is in such a deep budget crisis... they waste their money on worthless government worker to make stupid, lame ass recommendation like that... Governor, your first order of business is to fire that dipsh*t...
FYI Up here in Hamilton Ontario Canada, where we have a pretty ample Filipino population, I have heard the term "Flip" said and used pretty frequently. I haven't seen anyone take offence to it though more of a short form of Filipino. My perceptions might just be wrong though.
I think the main arguement here is that there's no better wording that slave and master. secondary and primary hardly mean the same thing. seriously. if u get offended by the slave/master terming, it means that you're still thinking of yourself as a slave. being politically correct drives racism. i'm chinse. i call other chinese chinks, i call koreans gooks, viets ducks, blacks niggers, whites whiteboys. it's a lot easier than saying "that black guy" or "that white person". and there's no reason to get offended by those. slavery no longer exsists. it's not like using these terms will bring it back.
Look, jackasses, this isn't that complex. "Master/slave" is a term that specifically conjures images of oppression and racism. It should never have been used for computer parts in the first place, because there's no point. Your own idiotic, sarcastic, and semantic bullshit aside, there's no real negative connotation to terms like "primary/secondary" and "client/server"; those are neutral terms which actually exist elsewhere in the techology lexicon. The point isn't the hardware ITSELF, it's the phrases being used to describe it, and in this case, words like "master/slave" serve no positive purpose that couldn't be served by less offensive terms. This is hardly "Big Brother", it's just common sense. If shit like THIS gets you people this paranoid and angry, I'd hate to see what happens if YOU actually had some oppression in your fucking lives that you had to deal with. You'd probably fucking MELT. And to those of you making inane jokes about the California budget crisis, if you think shit like these fucking recommendations are anywhere near the cause, you need to learn something about basic economics. I'm talking BASIC here, like what money is. That would be a start. Until you decide to take the time to actually think about things before you jump on the bandwagon and post some half-assed kneejerk reaction to anything any government ever does (and try to funny it up with semi-topical and yet completely contrived jokes about "politics"), just shut up. Don't even bother to start typing.
Hehe, so LA finally, decided to break open of of these "computer" things, people have been talking about for so long, and they had to find some problem with them.
i hate people who try to be politically correct about everything *sigh*
... proceeds to name drivers, white master, black slave...

They'll have to change piano keys too, make the black ones white and the white ones black, because the smaller black keys imply slaves being dominated by their white masters 😛
Seriously, this is real stupid shit. I agree with the guy above.
It can be quite simple, just use "primary/secondary" then.
If this doesn't fit for the requirment, then I don't know what would...
Oh yeah, and chrome made some of the lamest liberal comments I've ever heard. Did he/she ever hear of STFU? If some stupid game relationship get them THAT offended, then STFU REALLY should...
Fucking hell, you people are dumb. "White" and "black" piano keys have nothing to do with this. The WORDS white and black on their own just suggest color. Even if they suggest the color of a person, they don't suggest anything NEGATIVE. "Master" and "slave" suggest SLAVERY, which is a bad thing. Even the most thick-skulled, dim-witted, historically moronic of you should recognize that. There is a difference. It's an obvious difference. Holy crap, I can't even believe I'm taking the time to explain shit this apparent.
So slavery is bad, but thought control isn't? You do realize that manipulating language is tantamount to thought control, don't you? Hooray for the Ministry of Truth.
This is ridiculous. I'm completely anti-racist, but this is just nit picking to an infinite degree.
I guess the English language will have to do away with any words like "master" and "slave", and their synonyms.
Emancipation is near!
Flock to SATA, my brothers and sisters!
No more of this "master" and "slave"! All are equal under the eyes of our Lord God, SATA!
good laugh. sad, but funny.
The boy that sent that letter needs a good ole whoopin! Apparently he has his head up his a$$!!

I hope LA employees dont drive 4wheel drives, theye'd have to stop saying frontend, rearend, and the gear in the middle at one time was called a transexual, but they changed that to transaxle or transfer case. LOL on this one.
"So slavery is bad, but thought control isn't? You do realize that manipulating language is tantamount to thought control, don't you? Hooray for the Ministry of Truth."
Hooray for illiteracy, jackass. Where the hell does "thought control" come in, you paranoid creep? Do you think clever references to 1984 add any credence to your accusations of "thought control"? And, no, I did NOT realize that "manipulating language is tantamount to thought control"...I hardly even know how to respond to that. In order to form a sentence, you must manipulate language. Congratulations, you just controlled your own thoughts--or at least you tried to. Anyway, back you to your supposed throught control. It's not a LAW, it's a request. If I don't want people delivering shit-filled pizzas to my front door, it's because I don't like it, not because I'm a fucking Minister of Truth. If the LA County Internal Services Department doesn't want master/slave-labeled parts in their office, that's their perogative. It's not as if the manufacturers are under mandate by the all-seeing eye of the beaurocrats.
You're taking their goofy comments way too seriously...
Behold the power of CHEESE
"You're taking their goofy comments way too seriously..."
Yeah, I am. I'll give it a rest (for now).
hey chromedome .. please define "historically moronic"? I've been working with computers for over 10 years and NEVER ONCE has "master/slave" conjured up images of slavery or oppression. I must need therapy. Live in your century, for christ's sake, and STFU. You expect us to believe that white and black are neutral but master and slave aren't? You are a historical moron.
Merriam-Webster even mentions this exact usage of the word "slave" in def. 3:
3 : a device (as the printer of a computer) that is directly responsive to another
Again, STFU. Arguing for a proposal as preposterous as this will prove many morons historical.
Crome, you amuse me, so I feel the need to respond.
You have said that the terms primary secondary should be used instead of master/slave, as you feel master slave is derogatory and reflects slavery. Firstly, the primary/secondary phrase pair does not accurately describe the relationship of the IDE system bus: The master drive is infact master, it has privelage on the bus and controls IO, and the slave drive is controlled by it, hence master and slave. To use primary secondary would not only be a misnomer, it would convolute the issue as the two IDE busses are already refered to as primary secondary. Hence, your computer would have a primary primary drive, a primary secondary drive, a secondary primary drive, and a secondary secondary drive. Cleary, this is not an ideal solution.
Secondly, your repulsion at the term master/slave is obsurd. You state it brings memorys of slavery, and it can be assumed you mean enslavedment of blacks in America. This argument could be used to totally remove the words from the dictionary, even though they obviously have a distinct connotation and definition, ensuring them a place in the english language. That definition cleary fits with current uses of IDE devices, and if the definition fits, use it. Any negative connatation should be forgotten as the devices cleary have no refrence to the enslavement of people. To say that devices cannot be slaves is also absurd, as any mechanical device is a "slave" to humans.
As far as economic concerns go, your statement that people need to learn basics and look up the meaning of money is more absurd than any comment you wish to denounce. Have you realized the implications of every goverment agency opening up every computer any changing the labeling on every drive? Thats 2 labels per drive, lets say 2 drives per computer, so 4 labels a computer, lets say 100 computers per agency on average, that 400 labels to be scratched off and redone at every agency in the state of california, the most populose state in the united states. Now take into account the time needed to open up each computer, and the basic innefficiency of workers, and you can see that in man hours alone, not to mention supplies to relabel, this could easily add up hundreds of thousands of dollars, perhaps millions. Now take into account that this is one mandate, and that hundreds of these fly out daily, and perhaps you will see the economic ramifications.
Trying to make absolutely everything 'politically correct' seems just a bit ridiculous.... Wouldn't making a word taboo just strengthen its negative connotations?
IMHO anyone who sees Master/Slave as racially offensive is racist for their immediate relation of it to slavery in the early US. It implies a working relationship, not any historical significance. Sheesh.
How about their be no variation on anything. Instead of being master/slave drives, why not call each "Citizen Worker". And then they can do whatever they wish, as long as bytemaking quotas are fulfilled. Else, they can be tossed into the /gulag/ for re-wiring.
Let all electronics parts be /grey/. That way, none is "superior" to another.
1's and 0's are discriminatory; no one wants to be called a "zeroe" when another is "Number 1". Instead, the result of any binary operation should be in halves.
Monitors should only display shades of grey, never black nor white nor any other discrimanatory colors.
Burning a CD-R is like Burning a Cross. One must only review Black American suffering to know the pain multimillionaire pop artists feel.

When will we realize that theses kind of changes only re-enforce what we have, as a society, have worked to abolish. People of African decent are not longer slaves and have not been for nearly 100 years. Since the middle of the last decade, we have worked to eliminate prejustice and promote a "color-blind" soceity.
I find it sad we can accept an Unitied Negro College Fund, but a Unitied Cacuasian College Fund would immeditately be labeled a racist exclusionist organization. It gotten so bad that we often treat being black like is some kind of handicap. Blacks and other miniorities need to be treated as *equals* not as handicapped individuals who need special treatment.
As long as we continue to treat black people poor opressed unable-to-succeed-one-their-own in-need-of-special-help citizens, then the back man will never truely be free.

plur
Maybe people are friggin looking into this a LITTLE TOO MUCH!!!
It's an electronic device for f's sake!!
What is this world coming to...
How about we just slap every context sensitive person with a stupid stick and tell them to grow up?
In response to TMK....
yes...but we have not completely reached this goal. Many groups are still held back by various forces. Much of this is perpetuated by sereotypes held on by so many, although less apparent than 100 years ago, it still exists. I am not saying that they are slaves still, but they are at measurable disadvantages. A good example of this would be a neighborhood that is primarily African American and is in economic strain has less property taxes going towards the schools. Therefore the quality of education in that area is most likely much lower than its suburban counterpart which statistically holds more whites. Due to the lack of quality education leaves the children raised in this area less likely to make it to college. Sometimes this is blamed to poor education, the family economy which might encourage this child to start work right after high school or unfortunatly, sometimes to drop out of high school completely. And the United Negro College Fund is geared towards aiding those in circumstances where the student might otherwise not go to colleg.
Equality will not be reached for a very long time, mainly because of issues such as these. It is obvious that many people still hold rediculously strong opinions towards racial subjects. And rightfully so. But to deny that there are issues at hand is quite retarded. Not that being black is a handicap in and of itself, but the situations in which society places such individuals causes them to be at a handicap with little/no fault of their own.
This is why there is so much government stress on lessening these situations, whatever they may be. There is still residual effects from slavery. Just because they were freed, the ramifications of this was not reversed over night, or even a century. It is going to take many generations to get things where they should be. But until that happen, you should not deny the fact that there is a problem. There are many, and if you don't want to admit this, things will not get better.
context is the main thing to think about here.
yes slavery is a bad thing, but only in terms of HUMANS. when we are talking about electrical components it really doesn't matter. if someone wanted to label people slaves and masters then that might be a problem. for example tony blair a slave and gw bush the master.
I just want to say thank you to Cyprus.
I came upon this link through [H]ard|OCP and I have to say I continue to be amazed at the hypersensitivity and fervor that (idiotic) people can seem to work themselves into over the smallest of things. People like chrome show that these people are actually out there and not just the figment of our collective imaginations. Since he seems to be the only one who thinks this is a good idea, I'll just respond to him (hope you all don't feel like I'm discriminating against you).
Chrome, you begin your argument by stating that it's clearly a reference to slavery. Slavery where? Here in North America, in Africa, Europe, Asia, etc? Are you so readily convinced that any mention of the word "master" must mean a white guy with a gun? If so, those into the BDSM scene might be *GASP* offended by your lumping of them with slave owners. What about those who are "master of arms" or in similar standing, denoting a level of skill? The point is, you make the same marginalizing assumptions through your interpretation of the word "master."
Same with "slave," except that this time you marginalize any computer engineer who has to use a system of control based on ownership.
Get off your podium, open your eyes, and for God's sake (OH NO! I must have offended you, too bad for you that I'm not in the least bit sorry) stop seeing things where they don't exist.
-Tawnos
That's pathetic. If people are offended by that they must be pretty damn ignorant. I'm sure the computer was designed with the sole purpose of immortalizing slavery.

Simple solution. Stop selling them hard drives ide cables and motherboards
My slave hard drive ran away so after i got it back i had to get my master drive to whip it...
I'm with TAWNOS on this. This is political correctness to the n^th. And for that turd who's railing against the comments about thought control: If you change the way things are talked about, you also change the way people think. Example: Retardation. Saying someone was retarded used to be the same as saying they had a broken leg. It wasn't a shameful word, merely a description. Nowadays Political Correctness has turned "retard" into a bad(tm) word. Instead of aknowledging the issue and moving on, we have to feel bad for thinking 'that person is retarded'. wtf kind of progress is that? We've stigmatized so many things by declaring their description off-limits. One last example: Theft of Intellectual Property vs. Copyright Infringement. If you were in front of a judge right now, which would you rather be accused of? Both phrases refer to the same thing, but the news media has conditioned people in the US to *think* of the act as theft
Say what you will about the connotation of the MASTER/SLAVE terminology, but remember these are jumpers. You can change them. The slave is only subservient to its master because of a thin strip of metal that is easily removed. Anyone who has ever upgraded their computer understands the difference between these computer components's slavery and the oppression of humans.
Get a life.
I had to read the statement twice to make sure I read it right. Then I laughed, so ok. Let all of the manufactures who have products which violate this "sensibility" change their products just for the Sate of California sales and charge the extra to California. Just let AHnold repeal that statement.
STUPID STUPID STUPID what the hell is this place turning in to how come a black guy can call me honky, cracker, whitie, or any thing else and it is ok ,but if they hear any word that may almost kind of offend them if they really cared is bad. These damn people are turning into real big fucking babies!!! STFU and leave if you are offended by anything we do here in america nobody wants your pussy ass here anyway!!!
Excellent... I'm sure this project will be worth every penny spent on it. It's definitely a strong blow against racism, no way stupid crap like this doesn't just add to racial tension.
hahaha I am a MASTER electriction and i got 2 niggers that work for me and they never said anything about my license. This is just dumb as hell on cali's part
Okay, main story: fricking ridiculous. I can't believe it's not just some kind of creepy urban myth... but then again, yeah, I do believe it's real... ugh.
Ring girl/ring woman story: So... marching around in front of 35,000 screaming males in a push-up bra and thong panties is okay, but calling her a "girl" is bad, very bad. Mmmkay.
The German mnemonic: there's no mention of Nazis in that. What the hell is their problem? Saying the words "fat-assed German" doesn't insult all Germans - hell, statistically they're thinner than the average American and probably several other countries too!!
gay.
"Master/slave is a term that specifically conjures images of oppression and racism." - chrome.
No it isn't. Master/slave conjures up an image of nothing but one party being dominant over another. Anything else is only because of your personal biases and prejudices. It's not the term "master/slave"'s fault people are so weak-kneed, get over it. If you can't see this withough crying "discrimination!", I'd hate to see the results of walking down the street.
"It should never have been used for computer parts in the first place, because there's no point." - chrome.
Actually, the term accurately describes the relationship of the computer part. Seems like a great point.
Anyone who thinks that labeling parts master/slave is discrimination against black oppression, needs to rethink their ideas. Not only is it not inherently racist or discriminatory, but saying that the term master/slave refers to black oppression is. Let me explain. The term master/slave(if used in a negative connentation) at worst describes an anonymous master dominating an anonymous slave, nothing more. Saying that it explicitly characterizes a white/black master/slave relationship is discriminating against every other form of slavery that ever existed. Is it not just as reasonable to say that it is offensive to Hebrews? Virtually every culture/race has been enslaved in the history of Mankind. It's unfair to say that black slavery is the most important, simply because it is the latest. So not only is the idea that the term master/slave is dicriminatory illogical, but that very claim is in itself discriminatory and racist.
What do you expect from the left coast?
After a long think about all possible alternatives that I could possibly come up with to Master/Slave, I've got none that fit as well as Master/Slave do. Setting aside the whole issues of wether it should/shouldn't be changed, what should it be changed *to*?
Alpha/Beta is the only possible description I can come up with, however even that doesn't fit the actual role played by the different hard drives and could be percieved as offensive. How? It's greek, and as such, the greeks resorted to trickery and deception in the battle of Troy, and those who now live in that area can be offended by a reference to their ancestors who were killed by the greeks.
This whole debate reminds me of a matter of sexual discrimination I heard of a while ago, where there was an outcry of how all of homo-sapiens were called "man-kind". Suggestions were put forward as to what should be changed to. However, when other suggestions were put forward, they were also shot down as "human" contains the word man, "person" contains the word son, and as a last resort "woman" contained the word man even, so they wanted the whole english language changed, yet they offerred no alternatives for what the offending words could be changed to that were appropriate replacements.
To put it slightly bluntly here, if you have negative connotations of a specific term, that is your problem and you should learn to live with it, the word shouldn't be changed. If it was a negative *denotation* of the word, then yes, there is reason for outcry. But so long as it is connotative, in my opinion no changes to the english language should be considered.
By the way, one final point - I'm only just 15. Now that you know of my age, do you hold what I said above in a lesser regard? If so, you yourself are guilty of discrimination.
RIUM+
It's just political correctness gone too far. Seriously, how many people are going to be worried about what their hard drive is called? Maybe First/Second, or Primary/Secondary, or 1/2 (or 0/1) is a better choice, but Master/Slave works, and it's not as though many people have complained about it over the years.
ooh wait! Here's an even better one! Will LA County ban its employees from eating at McDonalds because they're now advertising new All-White-Meat Chicken Mcnuggets? As if white is better than dark! HA! If master/slave is offensive, LA County better start closing McDonalds in LA too.
(does this crap ever end?)
Freedom to the hard drives!
What amuses me here (and what i'm suprised only a few intelligent people have pointed out so far) is not the so much the actual absurdity of the memo, but the fact that the writer obviously has no experience whatsoever with computer hardware, yet he apparently feels the need to change the terminology that has been purposefully in place for the last few decades.
As an MCSE I'd sure like to see him explain to some government employee newb with 4 IDE drives how to set up a primary/secondary drive configuration. "Ok, now set the jumper to primary on your primary primary drive... and set the jumper to secondary on your primary secondary drive... or would that be your secondary primary drive?..." This is bullshit. Hardware manufacturers make it confusing enough already without the beaurocrats sticking their fat fingers into things they don't understand.
Don't fuck with my jumpers!
I was willing to believe this was an open-minded discussion about a frivolous decision by the government ... until the nig-word word started being tossed around...
I thought the last 50 years had cleared up all this unecessary animosity.
Frankly I think time would cure this problem best. Given 5-10 years, we probably would not have jumpers or secondary systems anymore anyways!
Well what can i add to this? i was convicted once for beating the crap out of a nazi fuck head....
Ive worked with computers for 14 years.... 14 years of switching HD?s to Master/Slave i never ever tought that it could be considered racist....
I have to ask one of my black friends about this tommorrow... (computer technichians SP?)

This has got to be one of the dumbest things i'v heard of in a long time. I have never thought of the terms master and slave as derogatory nor did I ever once in all the years i'v been working on hard drives think about it twice. It simply defines that one device is not as important as the other, not that certain groups of people are inferior. Anyone who gives a flying fuck about this needs some sense beat into them because its bullshit like this that makes our society even more asinine than it already is...

political correctness runs amok..... next they'll be complaining that the hard in hard drives is offensive to impotent men
Wait a minute... how could this be racist towards black people? Seeing as there were all kinds of slaves through-out history. Is this some sort of joke? How come no one ever started something with "floppy" disk / "hard" disk? This is just some person's reason to be a dick.
Great, now I have an idea for my next system to build. It'll have "1984" memorabilia built into it, with the "ignorance is strength" dude as the EPA logo and the background. Oh I could go on, but they're not paying me $27/hr to bullshit....are they???
I'd be fucking FURIOUS with the internal services in LA if I were a taxpayer out there. Instead of doing their jobs and upholding the law, they're busy playing pocket pool and making political statements to either a)get attention or b) make up for their lack of common sense.
California needs to fall into the ocean and drown all the liberals in it. Right now.
its even funnier cause to assume that the master would be white and the slave black you would have to be racist yourself
and many government jobs are there to keep people off the street.
ummmm, you cant use primary / secondary, as that refers to the IDE channel.
IE. Primary slave = ide channel 0 2nd drive.
also black / chalk boards..... I dont know of anyone who was offended by that....
oh well. on the in insane state
*sigh* Here we go again with these sensitive people.....
It infuriates me to no end to see these people in their big offices sending out memos like this fuck from California has.
Here's the bottom line - watch out folks:
IT'S JUST WORDS, PEOPLE.
Like the great George Carlin said - "It's not the words that are bad, it's the CONTEXT you use them in."
Master and slave are two words in the English language that represent a dominator and a submissive 'symbiotic' relationship. It doesn't necessarily have to refer to a human-human relationship. For example, machines are our slaves - they respond to our commands and recieve next to nothing benefit. They don't respond negatively (well, out of their own free will - if your hard drive crashes it isn't out of spite - I hope. ;P) The same as for this tech terminology. The "master" dominates and controls, the "slave" carries out the master's wishes.
You'll have to rip up the entire English language and the modern euphemisms we use today to be fully 'politically correct', fuckers. It's not worth it, because they're just simple WORDS, words that can shape many things. You should be penalised for the construction that you build with them, not the materials themselves.
I wonder how this ever came to light? Were county employee's opeing thier computer cases to see what was written on the inside. Was some technician scared of the implications of a master/slave relationship inside of his/her computer.
I mean writting that memo is a crazy thing to do, but who even brought the matter up. Where I work if anyone opens a computer case and they aren't part of the IT/IS department they can get fired. And I am sure that anyone who does work in the IT/IS department already knows why they are labled as master/slave in the first place, and if they don't they are most likely never to have heard of the terms anyways.
Such a big issue out of a non-issue.
the only real way you would think that is is a raceist remark is if you yourself are a bigget
wats a harddrive?
Notice how most PCI slots on most motherboards are white and the majority are PCI slots. I'll have to paint my PCI slots to add some diversity.
Actually, I have found that the white male is the most repressed group in the U.S. Ever heard of Affirmative Action? I am not racist, if I were hiring someone I would base it on #1: Their ability/potential to do the job at hand, and #2: How well I think I and my employees will get along with this person. Anyone who thinks #2 shouldn't be part of the decision should refrain from commenting until they have some experience in the matter.
When I was in high school there was a club, MESA. The acronym is "Math, Engineering and Science Achievement." The club allowed membership to people of all races and genders; blacks, chinese, koreans, jews, native americans... except white males. That's right, I, as a representative of that particular group, could not join a group *which I had a particular interest in* because they wanted to nice to minorities. Seems a little ironic doesn't it.
I agree completely with the county of Los Angeles, Slave/Master is an outdated term and should not be used. To better reflect the current state our our advanced culture I porpose the terms:
Citizen/Immigrant
After all the first one describes the controlling part and the second just does some work, right?
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!111one
"Fucking hell, you people are dumb. "White" and "black" piano keys have nothing to do with this. The WORDS white and black on their own just suggest color. *SNIP* Holy crap, I can't even believe I'm taking the time to explain shit this apparent."
Actually, I am pretty sure that NEITHER black nor white suggest color, rather the absolute lack of color, or the presence of all (visible) colors. I can't even believe I'm taking the time to explain shit this apparent. (potentially offensive religious connotation removed).
A quick Google serach yeilds information on this guy, perhaps someone should call him.
the only way the use of master/slave is offensive is if you want to take offense to it... i mean as it was pointed out it's a simple jumper setting... a master can be changed to a slave and a slave change to a master... that or you have the alternative 'cable select' in which the IDE cable decided which drive is what...
it's like the use of ni***r... if african americans use it its perfectly fine... but if anyone of european descent uses it then it just _HAS_ to be offensive doesn't it... and how far does this offense extend... if native africans use it is it fine?... if native americans use it is it alrite?... if asians use it is it okay?...
in any case if it is goin to be replaced i would suggest the use of 'active' and 'passive'... the 'active' drive (formerly master) has most control as it is most 'active' while the 'passive' (formerly slave) usually allows the active to perform operations first...

Don't even waste your time on this shit...don't replace a damn thing except Joe Sandoval's job.
jsandoval@isd.co.la.ca.us
Here's his email address, let's let him have it.
I got it off of
https://secure.cacommunities.com/uscommunities/state_statutes/advisoryboard.asp
so I think it's accurate.
that is the most dumb ass shit i'v eva heard
OK people the new word for today is "Context" and lets take the word "bitch" for an example. Calling a female dog a bitch is not offensive calling the person next to you is. Calling a piece of machinery a slave isn't offensive calling the person next to you a slave is. See not so difficult a concept, "Context" think about it.
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/std_ATA.htm
The master/slave connotation is not decided by each manufacturer but is part of the original ANSI ATA-1 interface standard. Such standards are developed by committees and submitted to ANSI-managed bodies for approval.
Mr. Sandoval should submit his ideas to T13, the body responsible for continuing work on ATA interface standards, and any other appropriate bodies.
These are standards that have been developed and approved over periods of years, involving manufacturers, engineers and others.
Mr. Sandoval is not going to get any renamed equipment anytime soon. If he insists on having his way, despite the fact that 99% of the people working with or around these computers have no business opening the computer case anyway, he will have to do without computers until such time as his submissions to T13 and ANSI are adopted, if indeed they are seriously considered at all, and not just thrown in the trash.
Scratching off or covering labels from hard drives voids the manufacturer's warranty in most cases. Therefore relabeling is hardly a viable option.
Perhaps it would make more sense for people to just get over themselves, already.
you know, i'm just gonna make this plain and simple. My friends tell me this as a joke some times, but it fits where perfectly!
"Why do youalways gotta make something sexual out of everything!??!"
and you know those Politically correct people can just PISS OFF for all i care!
Wow
It's a good thing that he doesn't know that the pressure from the pump discharge is a technical term called head or pump head. Or that the suction of the pump is called suction head. Sorry just had to throw in some engineering humor. You know what a crude bunch some of us can be.
This reminds me of the "Occupational Health and Safety Legislation" [in Australia].
What the document contains covers EVERYTHING. Basically, if there is an accident on your premises, you are responsible.
One of the things that an employer must even perform (according to the legislation) is an evaluation of the "possibility of racial tension in the workplace".
Naturally, this is impossible to perform.
Same applies to the wonderful load of BS contained within the memo, it simply cannot be done. So, what would happen if an employee was 'offended' by something in the workplace? Would he/she/it/transexual/shemale/anything_else_? (wouldn't want to make any gender groups feel left out) sue the employer... the state perhaps?
Overall, what the hell is the instigator of this largely pointless memo trying to achieve?
Still, good for a laugh. 😉
hmm...
You know... who exactly finds Master/Slave offensive? If its a black person, how do they figure that Master/Slave refers to White Master and Black Slave? If you want to get technical, practically every race on this planet has been Master AND Slave. So for those of you sensitive people who get offended by hard drive configurations... piss off and die already, you're holding up evolution. Get over your sissy feelings and grow the hell up.
Thats the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
Words have more than one meaning, and government needs to stay out of people's business.
Next thing you know they will say dogs can't be referred to as bitches anymore because its offensive to women.
maybe thats why manufacturers just outright stopped labeling them at all, it would always annoy me when fixing a computer and the hdd had no jumper setting labels and you just had to guess, oh well
As a note, I wanted to mention that slavery is alive and well in the US. Just talk to anyone who has "served" time in the military...
Having been there and done that, I can say that who gives a flying fuck about the terminology. Having been a government slave, I can say with full conviction, I don't care about words, I care about actions.
And, when it comes to using the words that best describe the function of what you are talking about. Accuracy counts, not a pencil-pusher's feelings.
Why do people think they have some kind of constitutional right to never be offended? Grow up.
i guess male and female connections are sexist....
MAN! The worlds faling appart!
There are alot of things you can't get rith of not talking aboute it... one of those things are racism.
If we dont use the words "slave" "black cable" "white knob thingie"(examples). When will this words EVER be assosiated with eanything else than racism??
Gah! The stupidity of the people "in charge" pisses me off.
OMG get a frickin' life! Some people really do have too much time on their hands. It would be even better if we called them Master/B*tch drives instead! 🙂
"We should outlaw putting chains on tires in heavy snow. After all, that might serve to remind black pedestrians and drivers that once their ancestors were in chains."
Wow! I never thought of that! Putting chains on black tires because of white snow! California better jump on that one fast!
When you think about it, on MOST systems the master does most of the work while the slave is less frequently used mostly for storage or backup. Logically the slave drive should be primary, no?
PC Question: Is my boss now a "secondary device" driver?
What dumb nigger dreamed this fucked up shit? my daddy says i'm a pretty little jew.
What about the Britney Spears song, "I am a Slave 4 U"? I bet that's considered racist because every time I hear it, I know that a prepubescent chick somewhere is conjugating up thoughts of their ancestors forced into slavery.
"Master/slave is a term that specifically conjures images of oppression and racism. It should never have been used for computer parts in the first place, because there's no point." - chrome
Well why stop there? We should ban the concept of a master and slave in the computer altogether and force all hardware peripherical to have equal standing. Afterall even the concept of one computer HD dominating another HD brings up the horrifying thoughts of slavery.
By the way, the terms "Primary/Secondary" are also racist as they infer that one thing is only second to another. And this immediately brings up the thoughts of slavery to the minds of bigots.
You know, I'm willing to bet that the person who got offended was white, not black. After all, I hardly think a black guy would get offended by a term labbeling like "master/slave", while at the same time has no problem calling his friends "My Nigga".
This is a clear cut case of some middle aged, beaurocratic, big-assed, white divorced woman, who has taken on the resposibility of feeling offended on black peoples behalf.
Someone mentioned George Carlin. Oh yes, he would have a field day with this one.
BTW, how do you know the worlds gone mad?
It's when the worlds best golfer i black, the worlds best rapper is white, the rench accuse the americans of being snobbish, and germany refuses to go to war.
Peace out!
The best way to get rid of a negative connotation of a word is to desensitize people by exposure to it.
Calling crippled people "differently abled" doesn't magically make crippled people better.
Calling fat people "gravitationally challenged" or whatever bullshit term is used now doesn't make them any less fat.
If anything it makes it makes obesity sound like a more attractive option.
Life isn't sugar-coated no matter how sweet you make the words sound.
By sheltering people from things you just make them ignorant and weak.
This happens everywhere in nature.
If you are constantly sheltered from the cold by a warm environment and you are subjected to a cold environment it could be harmful to you (or even deadly in some cases)... while, to people that live in that environment it is normal.
If you are constantly exposed to small amounts of a poison your body can build up an immunnity to it so that something that you could drink something that is strong enough to kill another person and it would not even harm you.
This is similar to how disease killed off a lot of the Indians when the "settlers" came to America... because their bodies had never been exposed to the diseases of Europe.
If you live near an airport or railroad tracks at first you won't be able to sleep because of all the noise, but eventually you will be so used to it that you tone it out almost completely.
If government officials show people that they can win petty lawsuits about things like this (not that anyone has filed a suit on this... yet) and force other people to bend to their weakness you only strengthen their sensitivity to other "harmful" words and encourage hypersensitivity amongst the rest of the population.
What's next?
Will business's buildings have to be rainbow colored so that all ethnicities are equally represented?
Would that offend gay people?
What about grey? It's neither black nor white... but it might offend old people (oops... I mean senior citizens) that have grey hair.
What about clear? Animal rights activists wouldn't like that because birds would fly into the buildings.
Where does it stop?
When can nothing can possibly offend anyone?
I'll tell you when.
When we are all dead (because upsetting things are part of life) and not a moment sooner...
unless...
I say we fight back with a SPASM.
"Socially Protective Anti-Sensitivity Movement".
Who is with me?
"What'sa be a com poo ter? Massah, I'sa be offended by the nigga hard drive! I'sa wanna be a nigger CD burner!"
"Shuddap, ya damn nigger, or I'll throw you on the grill!"
"No'saba mastah, please don't thro me on da grill! I'sa stop talkin massah, honest I wills!"
Fuck em, fuck the bastards. Fuck em right to hell. Let me shove my white, mid sized dick into their beurocratic asses, and give them a reality check!
Did anyone find this opressive, og did I accidentally hurt your sensitive innards??
If so, fuck you too!
😀

Its likely that this purchasing agent for the county wants to get products from one specific manufacturer because he/she gets kickbacks from that company for every purchase. This complaint is just a loophole to justify buying from that one company that doesnt use the terms master/slave
BAHAHAHA...
Every day we see more and more reasons to discriminate against Americans for the shit that flows from their shores. Don't forget that the *rest* of the planet doesn't have this inbuilt insecurity about the terminology of Master/Slave. Lemme make an example - what connotations would be conjured in your mind if it were "carrot/celery". I imagine it would make no sense whatsoever, but just for a moment suppose those two terms describe the relationship between the devices perfectly. Are you offended yet? Didn't think so.
Looks like the word "yank" will be banned one day, but only when enough "yanks" blow a sizeable portion of the planet away with their duplicitous peace/war ideals forced on the rest of our great floating space rock (hence becoming a minority ... thought I'd better spell that one out.) Did you guys know that there's other countries on Earth?! WOWEE there's more to this place than America alone, who woulda thunk it paw?
Here, the word "nigger" is essentially used to describe an American rap artist (including eminem 🙂 ). It's also another word for "black", as in not-reflecting-visible-light black.
Still... With the words "f*ck" and "c*nt" losing their offensive value, we do have a need to create new words to offend idiots with.
Thanks to Geno for pointing out (seemingly ignored) that the concept of slavery has been around for millenia. The Greeks did it, the Romans did it, the Egyptians did it, hell even the Mesopotamians probably did it.
Of course, being the land that appears profoundly unable to see two inches beyond its own bloated navel, of course y'all have to assume that anything to do with slavery must be black and white.
(And breath)
Yes, worrying about such shite is stupid and trivial when there are much bigger issues to deal with However in a larger context it's probably also useful to remember that our language shapes the way that we think. If there wasn't a word for democracy, how easy would it be to express the concept.
Take freedom for instance - as far as I can see, it seems to have been twisted around into the freedom to buy this product or that rather than the freedom to tell Dubya that he's a twat.
Anyway, enough from me
Lest anyone forget, the word "robot" is derived from the Czech word for "drudgery" or "servitude" and denotes a slave class. It comes from the play "R.U.R." by Karel Capek which was about enslaved biologically engineered creatures overthrowing their human masters.
"The WORDS white and black on their own just suggest color. Even if they suggest the color of a person, they don't suggest anything NEGATIVE. "Master" and "slave" suggest SLAVERY, which is a bad thing."
I think Chrome solved the problem for us, just call the drives white/black because theres nothing racial about that, right?
And you find it strange that the rest of the world hates Americans..?? If this is the shit you bitch about in your country... I will be so glad when the terrorists finally kill all 250 million of you morons and this planet will be a better place to live.. ]:)
Maybe we should sue Portugal, afterall Columbus was Portuguese and he discovered America....
did you know that ONLY in the united states did slavery depend on race? In other countries, you could be a slave regardless of what ethnicity you are. The master drive DOES opress the slave drive. What else would you name them? Primary/Secondary done'st make sense since Slave is not a backup drive.
?Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims is the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than *omnipotent moral busybodies.* The robber baron?s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.?
? C. S. Lewis
But the master/slave thingie is kind of... non-discriminating, because either device can be the master, or if you want to, you can let them take turns.... 😛
I hope they don't mean that! I'm not from the US and I'm sorry to write this, but: "Something as stupid as this could come only from US."
Is a harddrive a living person? It's a maschine! And I think, that there is a difference to call a man/woman "slave" or to say: "this HD is connected as slave".
This happens when someone who does not understand something is trying to change its' terminology.
God save us from these people, they don't know, what they are doing. 🙂
I hope no one takes offense from the last statement....
How about this one? Anyone heard of Serial ATA? Master/Slave configuration for serial ATA does not exist and eventually Serial ATA will replace Parallel ATA as its faster and creates more airflow than those wide-ass parallel cables. So isn't this just moot anyway? Bitching about obsolete technology? Someone fire that stupid ass for wasting the taxpayer's money on this crap.
OMG USA IDIOT KEKEKE
Seriously though...
...
right... couldn't think of anything serious...
However, this seems very fitting to quote here:

... intended or not, that was probably the most intelligent comment on this.
State pours black men into prisons, conveniently owned/operated by private contractors in need of slavelabour.
State bans term "slave" from language.
Then again - wtf do I know
*sigh*....only in the US.
Of course you should avoid using "Master". That would make an MBA a BA. That way I would not feel inferior, but I guess the person with the MBA would think this is BS...
What a fucked up country.
Naming a city after "Angels" is offensive to people who's religion denies the existence of Angels.
US sucks but we all know that
They need to change the term "Server Farms" to "Server Plantations"
well you know it has to be changes so we dont hurt the hard drives feelings you know
all you fucking bigots that thought that this was the least bit racest should be put into slavery and shot exicutionar style because you are a slave
damn you and your rich asses
"ill be back"
bitch
*sigh* Messed up States.
Why can't we make it illegal fopr americans to reproduce? I'd like that. Then we could get some sense into this world in about 100 years time...
They are fucked up
What about "Mother board". Aint that offensive to all the Fathers out there?
Hehe, USA never stop to suprise me 😉
It reminds me of a time, ages ago, in my mid-teens when I did some major home plumbing repair and had to go to a plumbing store, ask the (gasp!) female employee for FEMALE SOCKETS and MALE connectors. Between my imagination, hormones, shyness and age, I had great difficulty asking for parts. Obviously those terms SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH SEXUALLY NEUTRAL ONES!! Heh.
Do keep in mind that the idiot that came up with this master/slave bit probably couldn't explain what the technical terms mean if his life dependend on it.
>> i guess male and female connections are sexist....
Or at least sexual innuendo, which of course is considered sexual harrassment in many workplace offices in many countries (including mine, Australia).
Oh, and we shouldn't be using the term MBA either? I would have to wholeheartedly agree except for one point: BA is also unable to be used, because it refers to the term "Bachelor's Degree". A Bachelor is an unmarried male. Therefore, only unmarried males are able to have BA's, which discriminates against women and married men.
Don't even get me *started* on the term "Doctorate"....
/sarcasm off.
The world's gone mad, I swear. Oops, better not swear, I could offend someone. Sorry. No, I mean it, my sincerest apologies. 🙂
PS: I love that quote from CS Lewis.
America is a stupid contry
If there was a tax on stupidity, the government (any government, anywhere in the world) could self-finance and stop taxing the citizens...
LOL! stupid ppl... i thought it was a joke at first. That law is more stupid than the law in Alaska that says a moose cant have sex with another moose on the road pimp =P
For Rossum
Robot means worker in Russian, and i guess a worker is a slave in a way
shouln't we rename the "black box" on the airplanes to "afro american-box" ?
i remember, a few years ago, a few people were complaining about the term. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .'Black Coffee'!!
I think some people have to much spare time on their hands.
......And i agree with them!! erm......i think.....or maybe not!!! FFS
When I come to think of it ATI sounds a bit like NAZI ?!?!.............

Hey SW_Chris... I think you Americans are allright. But your laws and government, however, can be quite hilarious and in some cases even annoying, because it interferes with our everyday in other countries. For instance i find your laws about patents annoying, just take a look at the heavily discussed software patents.
I say lets fight back!
LOOOOOOL...
Stop pretending, people. Slavery isn't bad.
Involuntary human slavery is, and anyone not able to realize this isn't worth my respect nor support.
End of my point, read below if you want to know the argumentation behind this.
Rational/Logical point of view:
Slavery as a concept isn't a bad. It's not a good thing either. In the most abstract sense, it's neither, as master/slave is quite easily definable , simple relationship with no value associations.
Social/Semantical extension to previous:
You could say with confidence that "involuntary human slavery" is a bad thing, as it can't really be abstracted from that, and for (practically) all meaningful societies we live in it indeed is considered bad.
And here one could argue that "slavery" is used to indicate "involuntary human slavery", and that is indeed a correct claim _in most cases_.
This, however, is no rational argument against the cases where "slavery" is _not_ used to denote "involuntary human slavery".
Which is the case here.
Practical/Humane point of view:
We could argue that the ignorant+weak group of people, and more importantly, those sensitive for the emotions of this (sometimes smaller than imagined) group, might not realize (or not want/bother to) the abstract meanings of the concept "slavery", and thus couldn't and/or wouldn't act rationally and, consequently, would feel dissatisfied.
Here we obviously have a kind of abstract human suffering, but the question is of what are the best and most constructive means to deal with it.
And this is a value-loaded question, with subjective answers to it.
My personal point of view
There are two contradicting values here:
knowledge/rationality which is the primary force behind the "rational point of view", and humane sympathy/fairness, which is the primary force behind "practical/humane point of view".
In this case however, the offended people don't want sympathy, they want rights. This rules out the humane sympathy/fairness, and all that's left is the value of knowledge/rationality.
And that pretty much explains my original point:
"Slavery isn't bad, involuntary human slavery is, and anyone not able to realize this isn't worth my respect nor support. "

Oh my good. Political correctness has taken one more step towards stupidity 8o
Is chrome saying that he is willing to be mastered by a slave and in turn slaved by one's master?
What about primary colors? Secondary? The latter are "mixed". Bad connotations here. Blame Roy G Biv for the complication. And black and white on that scale....well...I won't go there....
Why not make haste on the White House or Blackholes? Oh sure, it's ok to have the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings, but the Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins are inflammatory?
And then what about that happy-go lucky Irish guy in the Lucky Charms commercials and then the mascot for the Boston Celtics? Offensive to the Irish?
And what about a Black and White milkshake? Why can't they use white syrup w/chocolate ice-cream? The same with brown fudge and vanilla ice-cream? Vanilla isn't white! Wouldn't the end result be the same if it were in fact dark brown?
Why are stop lights Red for Stop, Yellow for Caution and Green for Go? There's something there...I haven't figure it out yet.
North and South! No, not in my backyard! This brings up memories of the Confederacy and ....slavery.......
Is there a more appropriate term for kill? What about tar? I need to tar up my files...Can someone supply me with feathers for further action?
Maybe "host" drive and "guest" drive would do? Afterall, a guest always gets first dibs in one's house and both are on amenable terms, eh?
But then you have unwanted guests, so I suppose that would lead me to having to rid oneself of these persistent parasites.
I'm not sure why anyone hasn't brough this up, but the most offensive word in computerease has to be "kill".
And on that note, I perform the following
kill -9 chrome
To end this diatrabe, I especially like to flog William Herschel for the discovery of Uranus.
Thank you and have a nice day.
WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NEWSPEAK.
1984 is almost 20 years from now!! But never too late.
Chrome, the one person that is most moronic in this forum is probably you.
Words are just words, there is no universal meaning for them, only the very subjective meaning that we give them.
For me, coming from sweden were there hasnt been slavery for a thousand years, being brought up with computers, Master/Slave is more of an computer term for me than it is about slavery. Therefore i find it ironic that people like you get offended by it.
You say it has nothing to do with the black/white keys on a piano. Well, why wouldnt it?
For some people the terms "black" and "white" has an negative meaning, suggesting racistic thoughts. For most of us its just about colors.
For most of us master/slave is more familiar in computer terminology than it is about what happend hundreds of years ago.
You would be surprised if you knew the true ancient latin meaning of some of the words you use every day. But who cares about that?
"If there was a tax on stupidity, the government (any government, anywhere in the world) could self-finance and stop taxing the citizens..."
You're right, Pierre.
And once again, the USofA would turn out to be the only superpower in the world!

...History takes on a whole new look as we learn that Lincoln freed the secondaries...
"Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history."
Abraham Lincoln, Annual Message to Congress, December 1862
And now friends, we battle to free the hard drives. I wonder when L.A. will issue an emancipation proclamation...
*LMFAO* silly people so bloody sensitive
Master/slave? Slave/master? Who's really in control? Can one function without the other?
I think some poor student will end up writing their thesis on this website, so let's stop giving them information that will influence this phenomenal event and just wait for the real thing.
California must be the greatest place in America, because Californians have nothing better to do with their time than obsess over "offensive" technical terminology.
"What about "Mother board". Aint that offensive to all the Fathers out there?

yea, like when i told my tech teacher last week when the class was talking about motherboards and daughterboards and i said "ok we have motherboards and daughterboards but wheres the fatherboards and the sonboards? sounds like these people are sexist to me!"
lol the 2 ports are allready called primary and secondary... so currently it's primary master, primary slave, secondary master, secondary slave...
they want:
primary primary, primary secondary, secondary primary, secondary secondary

i demand that crackers no longer be called crackers.... it is offensive to me.
what about hydraulic slave cylinders? will they have to come up with a new name for them too?
i am depressed by the idiocy in this country....gives people like me a bad name....
oh, and chrome, you said something about how
"I'd hate to see what happens if YOU actually had some oppression in your fucking lives"
have you, by any chance, ever heard of affirmitive action? it's this silly little thing that ensures someone, who may or may not be as skilled as me, a job(or free ticket to college) because of their skin color. If that's not racism(both against them and against myself) i don't know what is... but i suppose that's ok-just so long as no racists get ideas of discrimination from computers due to their perverted minds...
A coworker and friend had not read Orwell's 1984. I suggested that he read it and he did so that very night. The next day he mentioned that it was a great book and then another coworker said 'yeah, but it's a good thing it has not turned out to be inevitable'. My friend said 'I feel it describes modern society exceedingly well.' Which coworker do you agree with?
PS I agree with the reader.
Just where on the PC do these workers see this term? Isn't it hidden inside a non-invisible box?
Any1 who sees this term labeled on the devices already refers to them that way, so it cant be offensive.
I forgot, though, it was 140 years ago, who'd forget by now?

We have thoughts, but thoughts are fluid. You know. And, then we assign a word to a thought. And we're stuck with that word for that thought. So be careful with words. I like to think, yeah, the same words that hurt can heal. It's a matter of how you pick them. --George Carlin
If I were to tell you that I'm writing this essay with black ink on white paper, would
you immediately label me a racist? Perhaps if I were to write this out on a blackboard
with a piece of white chalk, how about then? Absurd? In a recent letter from Jon Sandoval, pruchasing manager for the County of Los Angeles, to Eric Canuteson, a real-estate vendor using computer parts purchased by the county; Jon asks for the removal of computer hard drives using master/slave identification labels. Jon states, "(the terms) Master/Slave appeared to identify the primary and secondary sources. Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label.". With his letter, Mr. Sandoval is looking to change the world of computer engineering because of one of his employee's perception of english terminology.
In 1990, hundreds of computer programmers, hardware gurus that write assembly language code for microchips, and even political think tanks, sat down in a conferernce room sipping coffee and taking notes with ballpoints from their pocket protectors, in an efort to come to a standard regarding the first new hard drive attachment in years. The ATA, (AT Attachment) standard took four years of reshaping and hardening, until finally in 1994, a specification was decided upon. The specification created naming standards for hard drives and the copper wire connections that guided them. In the standard it was stated, "despite the hierarchical-sounding names of "master" and "slave", the master drive does not have any special status compared to the slave one; they are really equals in most respects". Four years of trial and error later, I can see hundreds of geeks heading to the corner bar, ordering black and white russians and southern comforts.
In Mr Sandoval's letter he quotes, "The County of Los Angeles actively promotes and is committed to ensure a work environment that is free from any discriminatory influence be it actual or perceived." Note the word percieved. Is our law based upon assumption or perception, or is it based upon "without a shadow of a doubt"? Perception is a lie in the eyes of the decision maker. When God made the rose red, he made it red. A color blind man, when he percieves the rose as gray, is not wrong, simply misinformed. Jon Sandoval took the perception of one employee, out of 90,000, and regarded his perception of the english words, master and slave, as being correct. Adam and Eve had no right in picking the apple from the tree of Wisdom, as so this plebian who made the inane claim, had no right in opening a computer case and looking at the internal components and making a judgement that his perception of the English words master and slave should change the decision of the godheads that spent hours upon hours deciding how to provide this plebe with a standard for storing his customer phone calls for the month.
Geroge Carlin, the foremost authority on the English Language, said "There are no bad words. Bad thoughts. Bad Intentions. Like Prick... it's okay if it happens to your finger. Yes, you can prick your finger, but don't finger your prick. No, no.". What right does a disgruntled Roman Cathlic who now runs a Vegas circuit comedy act have going forth speaking on the rights and wrongs of the English language? I say, more right than an uneducated LA worker who feels that, due to his lack of education, deems it necessary to force his perception of master and slave on a number of hard working engineers who have spent their lives in pursuit of better technology and lives for many. Sticks and stones? Lithium and Prozac are widely availble for any emotional hurts you may be facing Mr. LA worker.
Asian Americans (was I politically correct, or are they black?) are certainly not the only race to suffer slavery at the hands of masters. In fact, the Hebrews, while certainly sunburned, were pale as compared to their tawny Egyptian overlords. Is the hate due to, in part, the recentness of the slavery movement? Slavery was abolished in the state of Vermont in 1777, more than 200 years ago. In the same light, my English folks were driven by the French back to their homeland in the Hundred Year's War... God Forbid I drink Bordeaux once a month. The advent of political correctiveness has furthered to bring light to past differences, certainly not to help distance us from them. I recently listened to a children's song entitled "My Cheeseburger", a love song from a Vegetable to a Cheeseburger patty. It was cute and my two year old danced the night away to it's fun. Later I was to find a plebe had written to the producer that the advocation of beef to the masses was wrong, and they should be ashamed of theirselves. The producer wrote back personally and responded, "I love Cheeseburgers, but never made you eat one.".
Wow. Had a few too many when I wrote the prvious essay for my English Comp class.
Lots of spelling errors

Today , You burn anyones words (not just Wilhelm Reich books about orgasm and annoying writers books) in the sacred name of correctness .....
