New at Reason: It took Jimmy Carter to realize that America is suffering from a national malaise; now John Hood speculates that the individual states have come down with a budget-busting form of Parkinson's Malaise.

Tell state workers they can have either civil service or unions, but not both.

Tell workers that whenever their total cost per worker reaches 110% of comparable private work, their jobs shall be bid out.

Tell worker’s unions that if they spend any dues money for political reasons not directly associated with collective bargaining they will lose the right to automatic dues collection.

When unionized public workers are no longer a source of most of the Democrst’s funding, the pressure to raise taxes will abate.

  2. Jason Ligon   22 years ago

    Gene,

Around these parts, there is a big hubbub about a law that requires all public projects to be done at the ‘fair’ union wage, thus preventing anyone from competing with the unions.

    How stupid is that?

  3. Steve in CO   22 years ago

Gene, not that I am offering any evidence but I think you are over-simplifying the myriad of reasons we have inexorable government growth…

It seems, if left unchecked, we will go to work in our government cars to our government jobs, listening to 3 minutes of hate on government provided radios and radio stations, and then return to our government quarters.

But is that inevitable? No. At least I hope not, and I can’t prove that it won’t.

  4. Steve in CO   22 years ago

PS Gene, did you read the article? I no it is kind of longish, but it is worth it. I notice that you stick by the tired but mostly true mantra that it is “all the Democrats’ fault.” In the article, as a matter of fact the beginning of it, there are some Democrats who are the anti-tax crusaders, and Republicans the ones who want to raise them [taxes].

  5. Gene 6-Pack   22 years ago

I have been on every side of the street. Just tell me why my recommendations, none of which I labeled either Democrat or Republican, would not stem the rush to more taxes? The last Democrat I voted for was Adlai Stevenson, and the only time I registered Republican was to vote for Shirley Temple Black in the primary against Pete McCloskey.
Given that the Civil servant, now lives well above the majority of taxpayers, tell me why I am wrong.

Just for the record, the speed of comments usually varies based on what server you’re running on, but we do notice that having static individual archives (like all TypePad pages do) is usually faster than popping up a comment form, so that may be a benefit for you if your existing server’s a bit slow in displaying comments.
