As an editor for a small newspaper (that doesn't have an ombudsperson), I agree with much of Matt's commentary, especially the idea that the responsibility of responding to concerns and complaints or readers is very much the responsibility of each and every journalist at a paper. I do think, though, that in principle the ldea of having an independent advocate for readers is a good one.

Having a senior editor write an ombudsman-type column is probably the best approach, because that person actually has the authority to make changes and respond to criticism with action. Of course, most of those types are insulated from the real world and come from an inbred, highfalutin newsroom culture, so there's the problem.

The ombudsman is a good idea that unfortunately isn't well-executed by most papers that employ one.
