New at Reason: Is the "New Anti-Catholicism" worthy of belief? Not a chance, I sez.

When someone uses the "Last Acceptable Prejudice" line, you know they're full of it. In addition to Catholics, I've seen it applied to Italians, Poles, French people, evangalicals, white people, rich people, and fat people.
Bless you, Tim. It's not every day that I see "nunsploitation" films referenced on a mainstream web site. Have you seen the gorgeous new DVD of "Flavia the Heretic"?
I haven't seen the new "Flavia" DVD. But I've seen every film mentioned in that article. Several of them are quite entertaining, better than some of the better-known "anti-Catholic" films such as "Priest."
Nun porn. I'd thought about it, but I never new it actually -existed-
I should have, of course. Makes me wonder what else I've thought up that actually exists...
Plutarck: it all exists. There is still nothing new under the sun.
Tim,
In your article, you say the following:
?The controversy over Mel Gibson's upcoming film The Passion kicked into high gear when a group of scholars, claiming to be affiliated with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops but apparently working for the Anti-Defamation League, stole a copy of the film's script and, after a read-through, declared it anti-Semitic.?
I know this is the line that Mel Gibson and Icon Productions has given. However, it differs greatly from the narrative given by Paula Fredriksen in a New Republic piece (https://ssl.tnr.com/p/docsub.mhtml?i=20030728&s=fredriksen072803), and by Amy-Jill Levine in a piece published on Belief.net. (http://www.beliefnet.com/story/130/story_13051.html)
According to Fredriksen, a major player, early in the whole matter, was Eugene Fisher, associate director of the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). (http://www.usccb.org/comm/archives/2003/03-083.htm) Fredriksen, one of the members of the group, says that Fisher, along with Eugene Korn of the ADL, assembled the group of scholars.
I don?t see how it?s accurate to say that these scholars were ?apparently working for the Anti-Defamation League,? when it is through the partial agency of Fisher that they were brought together in the first place.
