What's Up, Doc?
Anuj Handa was among the physicians who treated the police, firefighters and others injured in the Sept. 11 terror attacks on New York City. He also spent three years working with homeless children in the Bronx. So why is he in jail and awaiting deportation? The British citizen overstayed a recent tourist visa. Handa said he returned to the United States earlier this year to complete his board exams. He had originally planned to get his visa renewed after speaking at a conference in Toronto, but concerns about SARS led to the meeting being cancelled, and he says he just forgot to renew the visa. If Handa is deported, he will be unable to legally return to the United States for at least 10 years.
