Recall Update

The big news from yesterday is that Democrats are now scrambling openly to come up with Plan B, while Singapore Gray battles his disastrous polling by firing off lawsuit after lawsuit (including one arguing that the recall is unconstitutional). Telling passage from today's Chronicle story:

17 Democratic state senators met privately Monday to discuss whether they should endorse a Democratic replacement candidate on the two-part ballot or stay firmly with Davis.

There was no agreement, senators said, except that the recall should be opposed and voters need to be better informed about how a Republican governor might undermine abortion rights, labor laws and the environment.

If you know you will lose in the voting booth – try to win in court. After all, election laws election laws aren’t relevant to the election process.

Given the nature of Cali Repubs, this seems unlikely, even ignoring the Dems hold on the rest of the Cali government.

Given that Davis controls the government apparatus, unless he can purge the voting rolls of 50,000 members of an ethnic group likely to vote Republican, it’s hard to imagine the recall election turning into a Florida-style “coup.” Simply organizing a recall, no matter the motivation, isn’t a coup, unless there is some interference with the voting process.

And it’s pretty disigenuous to pretend it’s only right-wing extremists who hate Davis’ sorry ass. It’s like the yellow dog Gore supporters claiming Nader cost them the election, when Gore would probably have lost even worse if Nader hadn’t forced him to deviate from his DLC clone talking points. Gore didn’t start frequenting labor venues and adopting his “people versus the powerful” rhetoric until the UAW and Teamsters threatened to bolt for Nader. And even then, he sent Holy Joe to reassure the Wall Street Journal that he didn’t really mean it. Fucking whore!

Every single person who voted for Davis the last time around can show up and vote for him again. The problem is, he’s afraid his former supporters will shitcan him. Some coup!

Reminds me of events here in Arkansas. Every time direct democracy acts against the liberal elitists, like a tax referendum, their op-ed pieces start quoting the Federalist on the virtues of representative democracy, the more indirect the better. One columnist, John Brummett, was calling for annexing Arkansas to Missouri to save the people from themselves.
