Finally, a Reason to Vote
The newest candidate to throw his hat into the gubernatorial ring in California? Porn magnate Larry Flynt.

It would be a refreshing dose of honesty without hypocripsy. Add to it, Larry knows how to run a successful business when confronted with government and religous oppression and regulation. However, what are his true intentions and what would he do wielding that kind of power?
What in the world makes someone think of honesty in context to Larry Flynt? How do those things go together?
I’m curious about the other Gray Davises on the ballot. If one or more get on and are registered Dems and get on the ballot, it could cause trouble for the current gov. Given that he’s got about 25% popularity in the polls, I figured him to score about that in the recall election should he be recalled. A large number of other candidates makes this a very winnable number. With the other Davises, though, it’s a different story. How will they be differentiated on the ballot? Middle name? Is the current gov’s middle name common knowledge? If not, this wouldn’t help him. Could he be identified on the ballot as Gov? If so, wouldn’t all the other candidates cry foul given that this is not technically be true if he’s recalled and therefore should removed. I suppose it could say incumbent or gov, but what if the others lobby to include the word recalled next to this title? If the folks in Cali had trouble voting before (although I don’t recall any problems mentioned after Cali’s last election) they sure as hell won’t have an easier time with a ballot that contains a couple dozen candidates (all it takes is $3,500 and 65 signatures of your party’s memebers) including 2 or 3 Dem Gray Davises.
Two things are clear, this thing will continue to get more and more amusing, and I’ve got one more reason to be glad I don’t live in Cali.
There was a Jesse Jackson Jr. who was going to run against the “real” Jesse Jackson Jr. for congress in Illinois. The real Jackson’s campaign tried to get the fake one thrown off the ballot, citing fraud, and in the end the fake guy took himself off the ballot voluntarily. Republican operatives were behind it, supposedly.
“If the folks in Cali had trouble voting before (although I don’t recall any problems mentioned after Cali’s last election)”
Well, there were no reports of voting problems last time because there was no chance of a Republican winning.
I vaguely recall that JJjr incident now that you mention it. I wonder if they would have been able to get him thrown off if he hadn’t taken himself off voluntarily. I think this situation will be different for a few reasons. While there may be a republican backer for one, multiple gray davises likely means that at least one of the other is an autonomous loon or opportunist. Given the ease of getting on the ballot makes this seem even more likely that some one could do it without backing. Also, another reason the other JJjr may have bailed is that he realized he was being somewhat of a cheap (or even cheaper) distraction to a political race(I know this is unlikely, but it’s possible). However, given the circus this thing is likely to be, and the short period left before the vote, this type of mindset is less likely to set in.
Another thing is that while JJjrII’s was to split the the Dem vote if the their names were identical on the ballot, this would mean a Rep victory. He didn’t really have a chance of winning. But given that the vote in Cali may come down to a dozen or more candidates, they person who wins may only have 15-20% of the vote (unlikely but possible). If there were two Gray Davises and they split say 30% of the vote, and non of the other candidates got 15%, then just a slim margin of random variance may hand the election to the faux Davis.
Larry used to be one of the good guys. Champion of liberty, free speech advocate, and entrepreneur supplying quality goods to a famished demand, a living role model of the American dream.
But now he’s just a fat old man with no fight left in. He sits atop his mountain of gold and whines about how those at the bottom clawing their way up might stunt the growth of his money tree.
Sorry Ray, I should have added at the bottom of the message. I thought the honesty and true intentions bit would give it away!
In reality, Larry is a politician living in civilian clothing!
That should have been “sarcasm” added at the bottom!
sean, gray davis (the current governor) can not run in the election for a replacement in the event that he is recalled. (and that election will happen on the same ballot as the recall.)
Well, there were no reports of voting problems last time because there was no chance of a Republican winning.
Davis won 47% of the vote to Simon’s 42%. It was too close to definitely call, right up to election day. So I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to come up with a better explanation.
Thanks Jim, I had been under the impression (not sure from where) that he was allowed to get his name on the recall election ballot in case folks did vote for his recall. It seemed a little odd, but then again it’s Cali politics.

You mean in addition to the Governor?
So Dan, what is your explanation for the sudden emergence of all these voting problems in the short space of 9 months?
I wouldn’t let the fucker kiss my baby, I’ll say that much about him.
