Disobedient Dog Refuses Court Order, Risks Arrest
When the Gordon family's dog Lucille received a jury summons, they simply wrote "Lucy is a dog" on the document and sent it back to the Sacramento County courthouse. Apparently, being a canine doesn't merit an automatic exemption. A few months later, another letter arrived instructing Lucy to perform her civic duty. Her owner, Caryn Gordon, called and explained that Lucille is a dog. The jury commissioner didn't buy it. The Gordons were told they had to prove that Lucy is in fact a dog or a warrant would be issued for her arrest. They were also told that a photo wouldn't do—and they couldn't actually bring her into the courthouse since she isn't a seeing-eye dog.
