Growing Fears
Radley Balko had this to say about yesterday?s post on the possible FDA approval of growth hormone for short, healthy children. He?s assuming that Humatrope amounts to child abuse, and offers a story about hyper-competitive parents trying to squeeze an athlete out of inadequate DNA.
In fact, the argument has nothing to do with kids who have a shot at becoming the next Shaquille O?Neal. A quick read through the original article reveals that Eli Lily & Co., the company seeking approval, only wants permission to use growth hormone on boys predicted to be shorter than 5-feet, 3 inches and girls shorter than 4-feet, 11 inches. It?s not an issue of wanting to dominate on the basketball court; many of these kids will never be able to drive a normal sized car. The drug will only help children attain the average heights for their respective ages, not a competitive edge over their peers.
From what I?ve read, the violent reaction the post mentions isn?t at all typical. This article mentions only ?mild side effects" such as joint aches. In fact, a study from UNC Chapel Hill claims that growth hormone effectively alleviates behavioral problems. Pathologically short kids tend to experience ?emotional and psychological problems associated with anxiety, depression and attention deficit." As with Ritalin, the literature is full of testimonials from kids who say it?s helped them out tremendously.

On the drive-a-car point, thanks to the explosive devices guvmint mandates in cars, ie, airbags, being short is downright dangerous.
yes, but does it make you bigger down there?
JAT,
short kids will just have to buy newer cars. They all have 'smart' airbags now that sense weight and react accordingly. Of course this is mandated now but is yet another example of technology stepping up to the plate to correct a problem originally caused by government action. The original FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) regulation for airbags was to pack enough stopping power to halt a 250 lb. man who was NOT WEARING A SEAT BELT in a crash.
Given the ubiquity of seat belt laws (another issue I don't want to get into right now) and the general common sense knowledge that seat belts save lives, our infinitely wise benevolent leaders at NHTSA are now starting to look at safety technology that favors belted passengers over unbelted passengers, on the grounds that you should be wearing one anyway. Recently Jeffery Runge, head of NHTSA, said something to the effect that to further improve automotive safety, the general public will have to take some responsibility for safe driving (through wearing seat belts and/or not driving drunk) - about the most sensible thing I've ever heard come out of that particular branch of government.
"The drug will only help children attain the average heights for their respective ages"
As short kids receive HGH, the average adult height increases, thus a greater # of kids' projected adult stature will be below average, & a greater number of kids will need HGH...
but who will spot the sea plane and ring the bell?
'De plane... De plane!' ha ha 🙂
As I alluded to in the previous posting on this topic, the question is will the bell curve shift upwards or will it narrow? I can understand why very short men would want to be taller. There is considerable evidence that short men get the short end of the stick in most areas of life - career, women, money etc. Tall guys have an edge in these areas. So once the short guys start getting taller, do the tall guys want to get taller still to maintain an edge? A potential damping factor here is women. Very short women will probably want to be taller, but very tall women are often looked upon as disparagingly as very short men (I've known at least one woman who wasn't even extremely tall whose ex husband called her an amazon). And although you do see some very tall men with very short women, a huge height disparity among couples is rare. I would predict that the average for men will shift upward slightly and that the distribution for women will become tigher with approximately the same average.
Tall women do have it rough.

"Pathologically short kids tend to experience 'emotional and psychological problems associated with anxiety, depression and attention deficit.'"
AKA, short man syndrome. Truly science marches on...it used to be these unfortunate souls had to wait for their first BMW and leggy blonde.
Tall people, like tall buildings, get struck by flying objects. If they manage to escape that, they strike themselves on stationary objects, like door jambs.
YOU COWARDS. So what if everybody gets tall. So what if parrents want their kid to be a first round draft pick. That's why they call it freedom. Crawl back in your holes you fricking Luddites.
Oh yeah - well what if the kid wants to be a lumberjack? Huh? How about that, you insensitive bastards?!
Warren,
One problem is that the parents are choosing for the kid before the kid's old enough to speak for himself or herself.
What if parents give the drug to a child, wanting the next Shaq, when it turns out the kid really wanted to be a jockey, or a gymnast, or anything where the smaller person has an edge?
Sure, it's fine for parents to want their kids to be tall, and I agree that if the technology or medicine is there and safe, a person ought to be able to choose to use it on himself or herself without a government saying "oh, but that's just not something we're comfortable with" -- but they can't know what the kid would want if she were old enough to make a decision.
No one wants to be a jockey. Folks become jockeys because they are too small for other sports.
There are advantages to being short just as there are to being tall. At 5 feet I enjoy a much more comfortable experience sitting in theatre seats, airplanes, wigling through crowds. I can hide easier, squeeze through tight places etc. Men find me adorable and want to protect me (sometimes too much). In short (pun intended) being short is beautiful!!
Being short(under 5'6") is good if you are female. Being tall (over 5'10") is good if you are male.
Pluto, I wanted to be President, too. Didn't work. My brother wanted to be a fighter pilot (sorry.) My sister wanted to be the Head Anchor at FOX News (tough.)
Let's all sing along "You can't always get what you wa-a-a-nt ..."
Damn, those Rolling Stones were "insensitive bastards," weren't they?
"But if you try sometimes, you get what you ne-e-e-d."
I'm 5'1" and a male jockey, and hope I DON'T grow. If I did, I'd have to starve myself to keep my weight down in order to race- which is exactly what ther taller guys have to do.
I'd do anything neccessary to keep on racing, including staying short when there are drugs I could take that would make me grow. Those of you who haven't tried jockeying have no idea what an adrenaline rush it is. And it sure beats basketball or any of those other slow sports. I'd take being short and a jockey to being tall any day. (Thank God my parents didn't give me that stupid drug.)
Honestly, parents shouldn't make decisions like that for their kids- they should let a kid be his natural size, or wait till he's is old enough to have some say in the decision. Parents shouldn't be allowed to manipulate a child's body just so their kid fits their own asthetic ideals. The kid is the one who has to live with the consequences.
