Anti-American Reflux
From novelist Margaret Drabble, writing in the London Telegraph:
My anti-Americanism has become almost uncontrollable. It has possessed me, like a disease. It rises up in my throat like acid reflux, that fashionable American sickness. I now loathe the United States and what it has done to Iraq and the rest of the helpless world.
But Margaret, how do you really feel? I don't disagree with Drabble that there are many loathsome aspects to America (though we'd likely disagree on most of the specifics) and I didn't favor the invasion of Iraq, either. But who does she think she's kidding when she proclaims, "I hate feeling this hatred." Reading her piece, it's evident that she loves to hate America.

Drabble is an appropriate last name for this chick. Her writing seems to be a combination of drivel and babble - hence, "drabble".
So is anti-Americanism defined as "hatred of the US," or is that merely one element or type of anti-americanism?
I see this word tossed about a lot, but I have yet to see a proper definition, so I am curios what other posters think.
THanks.
I find my country more disgusting with each passing day. Still, the good ole' US of A does a better job of imitating a free society than any other place I know of.
America; land of democracy, whisky, and sexy, my home sweet home.
Sounds like a hypochondriac to me-
Therefore, I prescribe 2 episodes of South Park and call me- how about never? does never work for you?
(Seriously, Margaret Atwood published a better letter to this effect- more nuance, less self pity, but same idea...)
Warren: Imitating? Your post is drabble.
The image I got while reading her "work" was of a foot-stomping, cranky, four-year-old who needs to be put down for her nap.
Does this woman ever leave her home or office and meet real people in the real world?
If she hates the US so much, then why does she let her novel be sold on US-based Amazon.com?
I wonder if she refuses to accept any royalties on US sales of her books, or if she donates them to charity?
Do we REALLY care what they think of us? No. Europe's sticks and stones may break our bones, but their words only serve to entertain us.
We can't be bothered with their little concerns. We have an empire to run.
Don't worry, she will join our evil Empire soon. Anger, fear, hatred, to the dark side these lead. Very soon Emperor Bush will use her hatred of the US Empire to turn her to the Dark side and use her to replace Darth Cheney.
I think she wants to be our girlfriend.
Would someone please throw a bucket of water on her, already?
Yup, that's newsworthy alright. . .a ranting and raving pms -induced hetorosexually-challenged female leftist spouting hate about the U.S. Doesn't this just prove we're doing a lot of things RIGHT?
Isn't it pity that these are the types of people who preach love, understanding and blah, blah, blah? If you pay a close attention to them, they have nothing but hatred in their hearts.
I don't think she has any problems a little USA Male sex won't fix. Just bend her over a give it to her and she'll see things in a whole different light. In fact, her "real" daddy was probably a GI.
Given what I know about how Great Britain operates--draconian gun laws that put little old men in prison for defending their property, a parasitic welfare state, and constant public survelience--YOU'RE IN NO POSTITION TO LECTURE ME ABOUT THE PERCEIVED FLAWS OF MY COUNTRY!!!
Oh... and by way, acid reflux isn't "fashionable" to those of us,like myself, who have to deal with it, you sniviling limey bitch.
So much guilt and hand-wringing over a little hatred! It's obvious Drabble is a prime specimen of the liberal in action. Anyway, who do you think you're kidding, lady? Why do you think the U.S. wound up in Iraq? The very national identities and borders of Iraq and Kuwait reflect the fact that Britain and France divvied up the Ottoman Empire between themselves under the liberal facade of the League of Nations. It was Churchill who wanted to use chemical weapons against an Iraqi uprising.
Croesus:
Properly speaking, anti-Americanism should never be used to describe hatred of the U.S. government and its policies. America is the host organism, and badly in need of a purgative in the form of another Shays Rebellion or Lexington and Concord. Those guys in Washington are just the glorified tapeworm feeding off us.
Unfortunately, there are too many self-described "libertarians" throwing the term "anti-American" around who don't recognize the difference.
The article isn't bad because its Anti-American, its bad because there isn't one solution offered in the whole damn thing. The problems she points out with America seem to be found in all societies including her own. She doesn't know the first thing about rhetoric. Shame on the Telegraph for allowing such a bad writer to graffiti their pages.
I think her comments are dumb.
I thing the comments of people taking this opportunity for a little cyber-bitch slapping are dumber, and sadder.
What's up with this? I thought the Telegraph was the conservative paper. Do the Tories hate us even more than Labour?
Drabble's rant is dumb and hateful. So are the misogynistic and gay-baiting comments a couple of people here have posted in response. As the inanities spouted by the likes of Norman Mailer or Noam Chomsky show, anti-American hysteria knows no gender or sexual orientation.
Gay -Baiting? Take a chill pill some of you people. Have you ever seen this lady? She's more masculine than General Franks. That fact that she is heterosexualy -challenged is not gay -baiting, it's a point of fact.
Is that so wrong?
She sounds like Sherlock Holmes talking about Dr. Moriarty. Sounds like too much cocaine.
No, I haven't seen her, and I have no idea what her sexuality is, but why does it matter? What matters is that she's a rabid anti-American idiot, and those come in all packages.
Oops, forgot to put my name in my previous comment. Yup, that was mine. 🙂
it's the fratboys versus the lit magazine editor! film at 11!
i love the internet.
I think as a Canadian ( a regional variant of American) I have a greater appreciation for the Founders' Constitution than in the fairy tale interpretations that lead some of the lumpenprowariat to believe state and society are "a family affair". God SAVE America, if Steve is typical. And Steve, buddy, what are YOU doing on a libertarian site -- agent provocateur, perhaps (thats FRENCH-Canadian for shit-disturber-without-a-clue
Good gawd -- speaking as a Canadian (citizen of a country set up and self-defined as NOT American)for whom the word hate does indeed approach a reasonable description of my opinion of the US federal government -- can the world no longer separate a society from its state? Then again, perhaps its too much to ask, if said people won't even do it...
In the United States, WE are the government. It may not seem that way sometimes, but our Constitution says "WE THE PEOPLE" in really big letters.
It's kinda like family, too. I can talk bad about my family all I want. But don't you even THINK about doing it.
"It may not seem that way sometimes, but our Constitution says "WE THE PEOPLE" in really big letters."
...nope, still haven't managed to stop laughing on that one. LOL
I think you should have added "QED" after that statement. ROFL
Geez, a Canadian should spend more time wondering about their pathetic socialized medical system and its' cause of angst and anger in that society; or maybe why a country with 35 million people can't keep a certain ethnic population from wanting to seperate from the Canadian government and society at large.
But then again, for far too many Canadians I know (I live in a border town), "thinking" just isn't a prerequisite to spouting off anti- American sentiment.
Also, when Don Cherry is your national hero, isn't it time to take a good, hard look in your own backyard?
I'd agree with jc if the canadian "intelligentsia" - media, universities, etc - weren't so homogeneous in their thinking and showed even 1/10th of the interest in critically examining their own country's policies and the motivations behind them as shown regarding their southern cousin.
SEDITION! Agent Provocateur! Ou sont les flics?!
C'est quoi ce bordel? Je veux de l'ordre ici!
While this gets printed in a major newspaper, saying the following would get you arrested nowadays in the UK and the EU:
My anti-Islamism has become almost uncontrollable. It has possessed me, like a disease. It rises up in my throat like acid reflux, that fashionable Islamic sickness. I now loathe Islam and what it has done to America and the rest of the civilized world.
sheeet, that last anonymous post was so obvious....yet so right.
sheeet, that last anonymous post was so obvious....yet so right.
Yes, Margaret Drabble's anti-American comments are abusurd. However, Steve's "needs USA male sex" reply and Mike E.'s "PMS induced" replies were just as idiotic as Ms.Drabble's. These two so-called men sound about 13. Anyway, it's the men, NOT the women, that committ most of the violence, I mean when is the last time a woman shot up the post office????With testosterone, EVERY day of the month is a man's time of the month. HA HA HA
Drabble also wrote, "But what struck home hardest was the subsequent image, of a row of American warplanes, with grinning cartoon faces painted on their noses. Cartoon faces, with big sharp teeth.
It is grotesque. It is hideous....But there was something about those playfully grinning warplane faces that went beyond deception and distortion into the land of madness. A nation that can allow those faces to be painted as an image on its national aeroplanes has regressed into unimaginable irresponsibility. A nation that can paint those faces on death machines must be insane."
There was no accompanying picture, but I think I'm fairly safe in assuming that she's refering to the toothy aircraft decoration that originated with WWII's "Flying Tigers." If so, it begs a couple of questions: Is she so uninformed about military history that she is unaware that this design isn't something new, but part of a tradition dating back at least sixty years? Does the long history of intricately carved figureheads on British warships mean that the British have been insane for centuries? Decorating the front of a warplane ("nose art") isn't limited to the USAF, the RAF has a long tradition of it, too.
Drabble is a despicable xenophobe. Her physical revulsion to another culture is akin to that of the KKK or rightwing hatred of minorities. Shame on her!
