Dazed and Confused
Last night I heard an evening news blurb about this highschool hazing debacle, with the anchor expressing surprise that it was girls, not guys, carrying out a cruel initiation-humiliation ritual. Having gone to girl's school where such a stubborn legacy of hazing?all in good fun till somebody cries?was being slowly but surely being phased out, I'm not surprised at all.

All in all, the women's liberation movement was a very good thing. Alas, the masculinization of women was an unintended consequence of the movement.
It isn't hazing when girls do it, it's bonding.
Actually, that brings up a point. You know that this sort of hazing has gone on for a long time. Now, with the advent of the cheap video cameras, it just gets to be seen by more than the participants.
In other words, pulling the same, stupid pranks as your parents gets you on national television.
My favorite quote from the hazing incident was one girl from the high school saying, "No one got killed, what's the big deal?"
My response, "Your parents are irresponsible choads apparently, that's the big deal."
No, it's not hazing. During their bonding rituals, the young women were merely roleplaying the subliminal aggression imposed on them by patriarchal, male-dominated Western Society. By confronting and overcoming this, they empower their womanhood and throw off male-aggressor societal norms.
Would you prefer they just make posters about their vaginas? That can only empower a person so much.
Any one who went to high school ought to know that girls have always been crueler than boys when it comes to their own gender. Now they're just getting bolder and more uninhibited about acting out their aggressive desires. Thanks G.I. Jane.
This is a very entertaining thread. But Sara, it's actually all fun and games until someone "loses an eye". If nobody loses an eye, it's ok.
steve, i'm glad i didn't go to *your* school. 🙂 but it's funny, i was thinking it was actually "til somebody dies."
>>>My response, "Your parents are irresponsible choads apparently, that's the big deal."
Steve,
I think the entire quote is, it's just fun and games until some one loses an eye, then it's just fun.
I'm going with "choad."
I am so glad not to have been born 20 years later, because, teenagers today cannot get away with what us oldtimers (between boomers and Gen X) could. Granted the hazing was quite gross, and some assaults did occur on tape ... but when I was in high school, I witness a few incidences that today, would have you in jail and you're parents selling their house and cars to pay for the lawsuits. God, I sound like an old fuddy duddy, "back in my day," as it where. Oh, I think I am going to be sick.
:-
And we gawk at the Shiites (sp?) cutting their melons? Reality is infinite perspectives I guess.
Luca, I believe you're looking for the word "grundle." I'm going to go crawl off and die now.
OK, I don't get it. Being the freedom-loving sort, I fail to have see any legal - and possibly even moral - problem with voluntary hazing.
This is actually a serious question, and from those against it, I'd love an answer: If someone is actually willing to give their consent to being treated in such ways, why is that anyone else's business?
The only problems that appear are going over the line of voluntary consent (ie- did anyone sign up to be beaten to the point of breaking a bone?), and the age of the people involved.
Further, I find yet another problem with being against such things: a little television show called Fear Factor. Save the broken bone(s), they do a hell of a lot more discusting and putrid stuff than was apparently done there, yet that seems entirely legal and with rather little objection.
If you aren't free to do stuff that other people find stupid and discusting, you simply aren't free.
Oh, and one more thing: Boot Camp. Navy SEALS, so far as I am aware, go through a whole hell of a lot less pleasant stuff in the name of "training" (when in fact much is hazing, for the same psychological reasons as hazing exixts at all, as discussed in Influence: Science and Practice - to filter out those who are not serious or dedicated, or weak, or unwilling to generally do whatever they are told, and due to the human psychological phenomena of attaching greater value to things that were difficult or painful to attain than things which were gotten easily), and I don't see many arguments against that, either.
So if the government does it, or if people are getting paid for it, it's OK...but if individuals are voluntary consenting to do something for free, it isn't? It's like the anti-prostitution arguments in reverse.
Plutark, I don't think the girls knew what they were getting into. They knew they were going to be hazed, but not to the point of injury.
If they were aware of what was coming, than I have to agree with you, it is no one elses business.
You play with fire, expect to be burned, it is that simple.
"Its funny til someone gets hurt--
Then its a lawsuit."
Plutarck,
From the reports that I read, the juniors believed they were going to have ketchup, syrup and whip cream put on them. This is what they were told, and, I suspect, what has happened in previous years.
They weren't expecting to be tackled, kicked, punched and hit with bats and buckets. Nor were they expected to be smeared with human shit and forced to eat pig intestines.
What they were expecting was fun and goofy. What they got was assault and battery. It a shame that instead of 78% of this year's high school seniors going on to college is now going to become 25% of this year's high school seniors getting suspended sentences.

Apparently the juniors were required to sign waivers before engaging in this activity, that's what makes it so funny. Once the lawsuits go through, we'll find out just how much behavior the documents encompass.
"I, _______, hereby waive my right not to be strangled with pork intestine, smeared with feces, and pummeled by garbage cans.
X______"
Sounds like a party to me.
What does Choad/Chode mean?
Dictionary.com sez:
choad
/chohd/ n. Synonym for `penis' used in alt.tasteless and popularized by the denizens thereof. They say: "We think maybe it's from Middle English but we're all too damned lazy to check the OED." [I'm not. It isn't. --ESR] This term is alleged to have been inherited through 1960s underground comics, and to have been
recently sighted in the Beavis and Butthead cartoons. Speakers of the Hindi, Bengali and Gujarati languages have confirmed that
`choad' is in fact an Indian vernacular word equivalent to `fuck'; it is therefore likely to have entered English slang via the British Raj.
The same source also suggests that "chode" is the past tense of "chide."
I was under the impression that chode is the area between a person's genitals and their anus.
Luca:
I was going to say "Let's not go there". But the pun is too obvious.
"Peri-anal" is the term you're looking for maybe?
Considering the "fecal" issues in this thread......
Wow...this thread went downhill in a hurry. Sara - where are you? Steer this thing back on track!
Speaking of irresponsible parents. I heard this morning that the participants in the hazing were drinking beer from kegs. Kegs supplied by some of the girls' parents.

To quote:
"When you rent a keg, or get a keg, people can find out who bought the keg. I wouldn't want to be those parents," Rollin Soskin, a personal injury attorney, told WFLD-TV.
Now, this is when civil lawsuits should be used. Although, I don't think the school should be sued.
I was invited to pledge a fraternity. When they explained that I should understand they had a ritual they imposed on pledges, I explained I had a ritual, fresh from Korea, of responding to violence with better violence. I can not understand anyone putting up with such crap.
I saw someone on the Anna Nicole Smith show (not Anna, of course, or it would have been illegible) wearing a t-shirt that read: "It's funny until someone gets hurt -- then it's hilarious."
I defy anyone to sink this thread lower than I just have.
Xmas and bomb bomb:
Ah, I see now! Lack of _informed_ consent - ie, crossing the line.
If that's true, then indeed the objections to it are quite sensible. Screw 'em, indeed 🙂

We are the master of
I think that if someone is stupid enough to go out and hurt someone then they should also get the same punishment.
"Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you."
Does matter if your 16 or 35 people go through mental torment from someone tring to have fun or what they think is fun
