The Union Gap
Back in January the Transportation Security Administration decreed that its federal workforce couldn't unionize. Now that is being challenged by 13 airport screeners who have gone ahead and joined the American Federation of Government Employees.
This conflict could get very interesting as the Bush administration asserts that a unionized workforce cannot provide security. Yet the workers claim -- in the first of many claims, no doubt -- that TSA's security is rife with holes. Among the gapers, bomb-detecting equipment is operated by untrained staff and, as anyone who has flown recently can attest, the utterly random "wanding" of passengers.
In the near term, the flying public will be caught in the middle.

When did a union member ever save someone from a terrorist attack?
Oh yeah....
And the beat goes on.

"Look for...the union label."
OK, I don't want to think about the union issue, it has too many permutations, and is so complex an issue, it's not worth it. But as someone who has flown international recently, there is an obversation I need to make. The US is totally unconcerned with security. Do not let anyone lie to you. The US was more concerned if I was sneaking an undeclared item back in. They could not have cared less about the security in reference to the flight. It is almost as if they were inviting the terrorists to attack again. And well, maybe they were. After all, if they ignore security, and terrorists attack again, maybe they can implement the Ashcroft/Lenin agenda with out arguement.
I have to agree with the comment about international air travel. TSA security is an annoyance only. A different annoyance from that provided when the airlines ran the increased security, but it's still only an annoyance. As a passenger, security on international flights out of Europe seems much more serious.
