Our Friends the Neocons
"Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly are…delaying and obstructing the anti-war protest planned for February 15," The New York Sun editorialized yesterday. What's this -- the neoconservative Sun siding with the peace movement? Nope. The full sentence, without ellipses, goes like this: "Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly are doing the people of New York and the people of Iraq a great service by delaying and obstructing the anti-war protest planned for February 15."
The Sun admits that "the protesters probably do have a claim under the right to free speech," but hey -- there's other principles at stake: "The longer they delay in granting the protesters a permit, the less time the organizers have to get their turnout organized, and the smaller the crowd is likely to be. And we wouldn't want to overstate the matter, but, at some level, the smaller the crowd, the more likely that President Bush will proceed with his plans to liberate Iraq. And the more likely, in that case, that the Iraqi people will be freed and the citizens of New York will be rescued from the threat of an Iraqi-aided terrorist attack."
And if the march must go forward? In that case, the Sun writes, the cops should "send two witnesses along for each participant, with an eye toward preserving at least the possibility of an eventual treason prosecution."
The Sun scribes: Why do they hate us? They hate us for our freedoms.

The article ends with the comment that if the Sadda-loving protesters succeed and Iraq attacks us, they may not have any precious consitutional rights left to enjoy. Perfect destroy-the-village-in-order-to-save it logic.
I am surprised that Leftists are not stealing copies of the NY Sun and burning them up...you know to "preserve the right of free expression."
I'm surprised that Rightists are not stealing underpants and mailing them to celebrity Muslims ... you know, because I love throwing in stupid non-sequiturs.
Evilcor:
"That was the most fascist single thing I've ever read in English."
I read a quote not long ago from a Midwestern mayor not long after Wilson's war hysteria/red scare (rough paraphrase from memory): "Whenever I hear somebody talking about free speech and the Bill of Rights, I think, 'that man's a dirty Red.' No loyal American talks like that."
I also heard Bob Barr immediately after Powell's SC address saying that every "loyal American" had a duty to give "our leaders" the benefit of the doubt. It was in response to a question on who we should believe when we're getting propaganda from all sides.
Holy shit. I've never actually read the Sun but was at least generally pleased and amused with its progenitor, smartertimes.com.
The treason idea is seriously fuct up.
That was the most fascist single thing I've ever read in English. I am seriously considering going to the 2/16 demo in S.F. despite the Commie organizers.
"The New York Sun provides honest and objective daily coverage of our great city and aspires to become the newspaper for serious New Yorkers."
This is posted on their subscriber page. I wonder who owns this rag, Rupert Murdoch?
The irony of this is reminiscent of the folks who supported the banning of flag burning on the grounds that it destroys a symbol of freedom. It should be apparent that 'freedom' is one of the most prostituted words in the English language, interpreted by both sides of the political spectrum as 'the right to practice what I preach'.
I'm sure the editorial reads better in the original German.
I'm not sure which is more disturbing. The thought that they think this is funny and they are just kidding, or the thought that they're not.
Well, shouldn't we cut Barr just the tiniest bit of slack, Kevin? I mean, you did say the question was which propaganda one should believe if it's coming from ALL sides.
I can just imagine the National Review editorial singling out belief in US propaganda among all other forms as a good example of "learning to love that little platoon in society to which we belong," as per Edmund Burke.
Geez, I'm a hawk myself, but give these folks the right to say what they want to say. Keep an eye on them, sure---after all, many of these folks are the WTO rioters with recycled "No Blood For Oil" signs from 1991, but for goodness's sake let them have their say. This is America, after all.
