You Sir, Are No Enemy Combatant
Interesting details on the sentencing of shoe-bomber Richard Reid, including this from US District Judge William G. Young:
''You are not an enemy combatant. You are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war. You are a terrorist. We are not afraid of any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid . . . We are Americans, we have been through the fire before.''

Not a very effective terrorist it appears either.
Well, it's hard to arrest the successful suicide bombers. They tend to be in small pieces.
Well, a terrorist can be successful, and still be walking around afterwards. In other words, not all terrorists are suicide-bombers. Though it appears that those who are less bright to pick suicide-bombing (or however you want to characterize it) as the best means of attack - or at least the most brainwashed variety.
Not all terrorists are suicide bombers, but it's a safe bet the ones caught trying to light the fuse of a bomb while on a plane over the ocean weren't expecting to swan dive 15,000 feet and swim to Cuba.
Then again, Reid seems to be a few tacos short of a combination plate, so who knows.
