Mao And the Inevitability of History
Here's proof capitalism contains the seeds of its own undoing. Sales of the five-billion-seller Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung remain strong enough to alllow the sole worldwide publisher to keep bringing it out in the famous 3X5 "little red" edition. Globalization irony: Copies of the little red book sold in Beijing are actually published in San Francisco. Fight the power!

As a bookseller, I have done business with China Books & Periodicals in San Francisco. They only reprinted the "Quotations of Chairman Mao" -the little Red Book - because it is prominently mentioned in the autobiography of the founder of China Books. Mass sales of the little Red Book in 1966 and 1967 established China Books as a viable business, a point made in "China Born" by Christophe Noyes.
Today, China Books specializes in cultural works, and publications to help people doing business with China. They only sell the Red Book as a profit maker.
Please correct my URL in the last posting. I put in a comma instead of a point.
Only in San Francisco... will you find someone publishing--proudly!--Mao's little quote book that even the Chinese don't want to think about anymore. Yuck.
- A former resident of San Francisco
