Deregulation has made the U.S. airline system less safe, right? Wrong! Despite a 40 percent increase in commercial departures since deregulation in 1978, the airline system is as safe as it has ever been. National Transportation Safety Board figures show that accident rates have remained about the same over the last decade, with minor fluctuations from year to year.
