Renascence—Thoughts of a Man Being Born

|

Because I did not hope to turn toward life
To find my answers or to satisfy
Incomplete dreams: I remembered too late
The things life had given me and forgot
Too soon the things taken away.
Sometimes I would hear Agamemnon crying:

His daughter burning for the gods;
Cassandra saying, "It could not be otherwise."
Because I did not hope to turn toward life
And waited for my life to turn toward me,
I could not see the death I lived.
The flames rise high, but cannot touch my funeral pyre,

Until the surge of life destroys the fate
That molded my death with cunning innocence.
My innocence was the key and I will burn for gods no more.
Because I did not hope to turn toward life
And waited for my life to turn toward me:
How could I hope to live?
