So... Who Won the Louisiana GOP Caucus?

I just spoke to Andrew Axom, the field director for Ron Paul 2008 in Louisiana, to figure out how they did in yesterday's caucuses. The answer? "Honestly, we do not know yet."

Here is how National Review's detail-driven political reporter David Freddoso explained it:

Last night, something like 20,000 Republicans in Louisiana picked the delegates to their state convention, who will select half of the state's delegates to the national convention (or, as Jim correctly points out, they may select nearly all of them).

The official results are not in yet, but I'm told that McCain beat all of the other candidates. The conservative "uncommitted" effort — designed to influence the party platform — might have come out ahead of everyone...

Ron Paul finished second. His supporters reportedly mobbed the 11 polling places, but many of them could not participate because they were not registered Republicans. They were required to cast provisional ballots, many of which will not count. (The provisional ballots are part of the reason for the delay in tallying the results.)

Axom confirmed all of this and explained that the "Uncommitted" slate was called the "Pro-Life, Pro-Family" slate. Until yesterday there was a good organization for Fred Thompson. When Fred moseyed off the stage, his canny organizers backed the PLPF slate and handed out ballots like the one pictured above, encouraging people to "win one for the Gipper" by voting for now-homeless delegates. "It was a very slick move on their part," Axom said.

A sizable of number of Paul voters were not registered Republicans until recently (some may not have re-registered at all), so they didn't show up on the rolls and had to cast provisional ballots. In all but two districts (where there aren't enough provisional ballots to affect the outcome) the party is counting them to see if they 1)were cast by registered Republicans and 2)add up to a win.

Final results, when they're available, will be at the LA GOP's website. We're looking at a majority of Republicans in one of the strongest GOP states (post-Katrina) who voted for either Ron Paul or a man who died in 2004.

On DailyPaul there are a few Louisiana caucus goers looking for an attorney to get a restraining order against the LA GOP to prevent them from destroying the provisional ballots. It appears the LA GOP is trying to marginalize Ron Paul as it was apparent his supporters came out in overwhelming force. Based on reports Ron Paul will easily win this caucus, but probably won't because the LA GOP does not respect democracy. It is becoming increasingly clear that the establishment GOP only likes to use military force abroad when it comes to promoting democracy, but are happy to suppress it here at home.

Why can't theses states just have a civilized primary vote? These caucuses are all F'ed up in one way or another. So in this case the caucuses determine half the delegates and then the convention the other half?

I can see that corruption could be a factor if any evidence turns up (but there is absolutly no facts so far that I can see that justifies the accusation). At first blush it looks like people showed up who were not registered as Republicans or who hadn't re-registered by the deadline, and they were treated per the pre-existing rules.

Again we see some Ron Paul supporters who didn't bother to register Republican. Here in my local area, I have reminded and reminded and reminded everyone to register as Republican. Yet just last week I found a precinct captain (precinct captain!) who did not know he had to register Republican. I fully expect on primary day to see many RP supporters surprised to discover they cannot vote on the GOP ballot. Sigh.

No John, it is not a conspiracy, it is stupidity. The stupidity of those refuse to register in the party their candidate is running in. It doesn't matter how many Ron Paul supporters show up, if they aren't registered Republican they cannot vote in a Republican primary!

This is an example of why Ron Paul fans holding out hope for a brokered convention are engaging in wishful thinking. If Ron Paul does not win a majority of the delegates before the convention, all of the other candidates will band together to defeat him.

Unless Ron Paul starts racking up some serious delegate counts, enough to be a major player at the convention, he should start his third party candidacy as quickly as possible after February 5th.

It's funny that Ron Paul has been called a "fringe" candidate and the "longest of long shots" all along, yet his supporters are almost overwhelming the local GOP establishment across the country. The primaries and caucuses are the weak link in the Establishment's control of the political process, because turnout is so low and so many people are apathetic.

It's only too bad that Ron Paul is already 72, and will likely be too old to run again in 2012. Another 4 years of organizing and learning the various intricate rules could make all the difference.

If we had international observes looking at our election process in the U.S., they would probably point to the Kenyan and Russian elections as being more open and fair. How can we be supposedly 'Fighting to spread Democracy' around the world, when the world can see on the fornt pages of their newspapers what a corrupt laughingstock most of our elections have become. And I'm not even beginning to talk about the Diebold (or Premier or whatever the electioneers are calling themselves this week) fiasco in using hackable data cards to tally votes! And what in the world is up with using PRIVATE COMPANIES (some owned by foreign interests!) to COUNT THE VOTES?!?!?! I thought our county clerks were trustworthy and fair enough. But maybe that's the problem- the parties don't want 'trustworthy' and 'fair'- they want the results tro match thier pre-ordained picks!

The Founding Fathers may stop spinning in their graves and just launch themselves zombie-like on a clueless electorate to point out how far America has strayed from it's Constitution and it's original purpose and ideals. How does this sound: Paper ballots, open and fair counting of those ballots, and only reporting the results when they have been verified as fair and accurate? Now the networks will scream and howl about 'Delays', but what's more important- getting the results EARLY, or getting the results RIGHT?

If only it were that simple. Louisiana gets 47 national convention delegates. 3 are party officers. The other 44 are determined at the state convention on 2/16, where the delegates elected last night vote.

But wait, there's more. Louisiana ALSO has a primary on 2/9. IF someone wins that primary with 50% or more of the vote, then 20 of the 44 national convention delegates elected at the state convention are legally bound to vote for the primary winner.

If no one wins 50% of the vote, all 44 are officially uncommitted, but will naturally vote for whichever candidate they have already decided on.

Out of twenty thousand votes cast only 650 were provisional. These probally will not get counted. But even without them it seems that Ron Paul beet all the other candidates. This pro life/pro family ticket is not a candidate and should not be treated as one. The word isn't in yet on how this will all play out. But one thing is for sure, this is just more of the same old dirty politics we are used to from the GOP. Shame on this group for putting together this fussion ticket and shame on the voters who are attempting to use this scam to marginalize Ron Paul.

I think that Dr. Paul would support the myriad of different caucus and primary rules that each state has as an example of states' rights. Remember, each state party has it's own rules on how it apportions its delegates to the national convention. We do not need a federal law saying how each state party is to conduct its internal affairs. What we do need is to become active members of the party and know the rules before we play the game. Nobody said getting Dr. Paul elected was going to be easy!

You do understand that the purpose of the election is not actually to select the winner, but to invest the people in the outcome, so that they will rally (some reluctantly) behind the next leader...? Don't you?

The constitution doesn't even provide for direct election of the President. This was an "aftermarket add-on," courtesy of the 50 state legislatures. Originally, the States (through the electors named by their reppective legislatures) were to select the President. This made sense, as part of the package of checks-and-balances that was designed to keep the Federal government as servant of and facilitator between the several States. Eventually, however, the people "demanded" the right to vote for the President, and the States obliged, putting into law schemes by which popular vote could determine the selection and/or behavior of Presidential (and later, Vice Presidential) electors.

Originally, the people were to vote directly only for House representatives (with the State governments selecting Senators -- changed to direct popular vote by the 17th amendment). The continuing push to have the people vote directly for President not only alters the balance of power between the governmental branches, it threatens to tip it over completely. The last thing we need is to legitimize the "unitary executive" by electing the President through direct popular vote.

You guys accusing Ron Paul of being racist, the chairman of the Austin NAACP came out in his defense. Ron Paul is the only candidate who speaks out against our unfair "War on Drugs" which unfairly floods our jails with minorities. His congressional voting record shows he's not a racist or a bigot.

Secondly, I do find it amusing that it took all the other GOP candidates to band together to beat him. I think a little more support and Ron Paul's message of individual liberty and small government will be unstopable.

Brandybuck is right. If I had a dollar for every unaffiliated voter that wanted to vote in the Colorado Caucus but didn't register as a Republican. Yes the individuals themselves have no one else to blame. However in Colorado the Campaign didn't touch ground till early december. That was a few weeks before the deadline to change your affiliation. Reality is they should have gotten started sooner. Now the organization is really coming together but we have lost a huge number of potential caucus voters and delegates!

This is one of the few things I like about NJ politics. When registering to vote in NJ, you are not asked for a party affiliation. When you vote in your first primary following registration, only then must you register for a party.

So as an unaffiliated registered NJ voter, I will happily vote Ron Paul in my state's Republican primary election on Feb 5th. True, that means I will be a registered Republican for the first time ever, but in life, some sacrifices must be made.

I think Ron Paul supporters were overly optimistic about the results last night, because so many pro-Paul alternate delegates were elected. Unfortunately, the alternate delegates only get to vote if the regular delegates can't attend.

I don't even think one has to argue "states' rights" when it comes to caucus and primary rules but only freedom of association. The Supreme Court decided that the state cannot compel a political party to have an open caucus or primary because it would violate their freedom of association. California Democratic Party v. Jones

My wife and I were two in the 4th district to have to cast a provisional ballot although we had our voter registration cards and ID. The cutoff date for registering Republican to be able to vote in the caucus was Nov. 30. Our registration cards clearly showed Nov. 26th as our registration date. We were told we were not on the list of eligable voters as the "list" were printed before Nov. 26th. Sounds very fishy to me.

I registered republican on GOP.com in November before the Louisiana Nov. 20 deadline... I had to vote provisionally last night because I was not on the roll. A person in front of me in the provisional ballot line also registered in Sept. It was very unclear at the time (and still is!) if our votes would count at all. We are both Paul supporters... sucks to think our voices might get silenced. I did what I had to do... the LA GOP is to blame for this confusion.

Per the 2004 Census Bureau statistics there are 2.4 million registered voters in LA. Assuming that 50% are registered Republican, there was a 0.8% turnout for the caucus.

So it is conspircy, because you are not on the voter rolls? That is why they are going back through and checking with the master rolls from each individual parish. And if you are going to comment get you facts straight, this was a CAUCUS not Primary, for the caucus you had to be registerd for the 26 of Nov where as the primary it is the 9th of January.

Two different things, and what is the complaint that even if you could not follow rules we should just let anyone who wants to vote regardless of party or state you live in. I was also in the 4th and severl groups of people who came from Texas to vote, and guess what they did cast a provisional. Is that fair? Or is that too a conspircy.

This will blow up in the face of the Louisiana GOP. Generally, no one cares about the Louisiana Caucus. However, if it can be shown that "the powers that be" colluded to prevent a Ron Paul win, well, that's news.

I suspect an organized effort to subvert the democratic process will garner more publicity and support than Ron Paul would have received had he won the caucus outright. Fox News tried to exclude Ron Paul from a debate, and it's still wiping the egg of its face. This is an actual caucus. People all over the country are going to latch on to this as proof of the oft mentioned "conspiracy" to exclude Ron Paul. Thanks Louisiana GOP, you may as well have made a Ron Paul commercial.

Here's the report I had on my loan portfolio following the recent election:

We have recently completed auditing the riot’s impact on our clients and as of yesterday about 4,900 of our clients had been badly affected by the riots:

-- About 1,532 of our clients were displaced and both their homes and business premises burnt down. This population is currently housed in church compounds and police stations.

-- Another 2,479 clients had their business premises burnt down or looted leaving them with no source of income at all.

-- 833 clients had their homes looted or burnt down and about 56 clients are missing and feared dead or critically injured.

That's why I say 'you don't have an idea what you're talking about'. But sorry for being literal and humorless.

On the 'arcane and convoluted methods' for electing a President - I don't like the Caucus system either.

But the Presidential election hasn't even started yet. At the moment, all Paul is trying to do is to get a political party to adopt him as a candidate.

The GOP Ronald Reagan bootlickers are actively preventing the only real conservative in the GOP from winning the nomination. The GOP is scared because Ron Paul has so much grass roots support which they can't control.

Ronald Reagan's Small Government Record;

--Allowed government expenditures to grow and just talked about smaller government.

--Foreign adventures in Grenada, Central America, Lebanon. Suppported Iran-CONTRA deals.

--Fueled an arms race that helped to break the USSR by outspending it, but left a Military Industrial Complex so large that we are still building and paying for Cold War weapons such as; nuclear subs, nuclear missiles, cruise missiles, stealth aircraft, main battle tanks.....

--Invigorated the War on Some Drugs and mandated invasive drug testing for all federal contracts and encouraged private employers to join the War on Some Drugs by implementing the same testing.

Ron Paul does not match the pseudo-conservative Ronald Reagan because he would not sit idly by and let our federal government grow like Reagan did. Reagan talked a good game, that's the extent of his brand of conservatism.

Duh right? Take that same amount of gold from back then, just a dollars worth, and see how much that dollars worth of gold from back then would be right now... The dollar now is about 4 cents out of a dollar compared to what it used to be worth. Sad... The Federal Reserve controls us all, kinda like slaves, they control the money, then that means they control the people. Do some research, the FEDS don't want Ron Paul, The Government doesn't want Ron Paul, The CFR (Counsel on Foreign Relations) doesn't want Ron Paul, why? Because it's bad for them, they don't get there cut, they don't get OUR MONEY WE SHOULD BE KEEPING SINCE WE WORK HARD (at least I know I work hard) FOR IT. Second, candidates for delegate in Louisiana historically have run on one or another slate, but not on multiple slates. This year, however, many candidates ran on more than one slate. There was significant overlap, for example, between the McCain and Pro-Life slates. So determination of which slate won is not as clear-cut. But it certainly appears that the order was: Uncommitted Pro-Life, McCain, Paul, Romney, others.

Identification of candidates with the various slates is not an official Party function and such analysis is provided solely as a courtesy to members of the press and as a response to the numerous inquiries received by the Party regarding this topic.

Someone do a deeper analysis please. I have a feeling the double-counted delegates to come up with the order "none-of-the-above", McCain, Paul.

The hard part for me is the press release giving the preliminary slate to the whole "pro-life" (which presumably means the delegate is not commited to any particular candidate at this time, only that they commit to voting for a pro-life agenda) while having a very large outstanding number of votes yet to be verified.

One thing to remember as that up until this year Louisiana elections pretty much didn't follow the standards of voting within a party in the primary followed byt a general election of the winners. Instead we had a primary where anyone could vote for any candidate at all, which had the bizarre effect of alienating massive amounts of voters by narrwoing a large field down to the "top 2", who all too often were from the same party. So party affiliation on the rolls didn;t mean all that much, so while the state is very muchmajority registered Democrat the actual politics here still leans more and more towards typical Southern Conservative. It's just that nobody had a reason to bother changing their registration before... until now. And thus some of the confusion and seemingly last-minute changes of registration.

The whole stupidity of the Republicans (a party very much on the upswing in Louisiana) in wanting to be "relavent" in the national results with some kind of early caucus, while at the same time trying not to be penalized by the GOP like Florida and some others have been with a loss of delegates, leads to the nutty system with the early caucus and later primary vote (and how those two will interact). Bizare, but for the nutjobs in power around here it makes a twisted sort of sense.

Of course Louisiana also feels a bit further left out because "Super Tuesday" happens to fall on the same day here as Mardi Gras, so you'd have an entire region that would have a tough time opening any polls, let along getting to them, so the State decided to mave that election day to Saturday instead leading back to the usual inferority complex of not having some seeming influence on the whole race.

In all I'd say the story at the moment is just a non-story here. Until the rest of those preliminary votes get verified the numbers in quite a few districts just don't mean anything yet.

Umm... for those who think the pro-life/pro-family thing means a vote for either a dead candidate or none-of-the-above, you're wrong. It only means pushing the pro-life/pro-family agenda at the convention and, presumably, only voting for an appropriate pro-live/pro-family nominee amongst the ones available. Thus if you read the article I linked above you'll find that some folks voted for multiple slates, apparently, in effect saying they were undecided but that several candidates might fit the bill well enough. It's not necessarily a negative vote against the candidates available. (Remember the voting at the caucus was NOT for a candidate, per-se, but for a delegate who presumably would support a particular candidate, or at least some agenda at the convention.)

I hate McCain, but McCain's pro-life credentials really aren't open to question. Next to Huckabee I would say he's the most pro-life Republican in the race. Romney doesn't count because he just makes shit up as he goes along, and Paul doesn't count because his federalism makes him less of an abortion opponent than the more authoritarian Huckabee and McCain. If McCain delegates were calling themselves pro-life that's absolutely fair.

Matt, I don't disagree. In fact I think the La. GOP press release aludes to that and it may well be that some of the votes for thsoe delegates are considered to be votes, in effect, for McCain. They may even be votes against Dr. Paul, I can't say for certain. Politics here can be extremely complex and it may take a lot more understanding of personal relationships to fully weed out motivations and interpretations by any political entity in this State. There's a saying here that folks will often vote for the incumbent, because you know how corrupt they are but you have no idea how corrupt the next guy might be! Add in the good-ole-boy networking and general who-you-know-not-how-qualified-you-are mentality that makes us might friendly folks down here, but of the flip side make us more than a bit backwards, and you get the drift of how complex the whole thing might really be beyond the oddball methodology.

Personally I'm hoping the provisional votes are primarily for RP delegates and that they'll prove to be legit enough to give him a huge boost. Lots of local supporters really ahve been pretty one the ball trying to make folks aware of the actual need to register Republican to be able to vote for Dr. Paul at all in the caucus and primaries. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I do find it interesting how Mr. Villere, in that press release, made sure to praise the Paul supporters, encouraging to come into and stay in the Republican fold. In some ways that part of the press release may be more telling about the Louisiana Republican Party than anything else. Not necessarily welcoming of the candidate so much as wanting all those energized supporters, or so it seemed to read to me.

They obviously hate McCain for "reasons they would rather not say" (meaning his opposition to their advertising under McCain-Feingold). The article is one of the more amazing examples of special pleading I have seen in a LONG time.

The guy has a good pro-life voting record (one reason to dislike the guy imo). Even they can't dispute that ("During his 17 years in Congress, McCain has usually voted anti-abortion"; "but he did vote pro-life with a few exceptions"). But then they add some pretty amazing "qualifiers." He (GASP!) told an editorial board that he'd "love to see a point where it (Roe v. Wade) is irrelevant" (that AIN'T good enough for fanatics btw) but he dared add "I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations." Now, even THEY have to mention that when asked about this "quote" (to ONE paper board mind you) McCain said that he "misspoke."

Jesus these people are interminable. They would prefer someone who works much of his life to fuck them and then when he needs them turns around and tells them what they want to hear (Romney) to someone who works most of his life in support of their position but has (possibly) said something they don't like (even as he ultimately endorsed their view!!!). And these pro-life people wonder why people think of them as crazy fanatics...

There was a lot of mess and corruption going on with Dave Treen, Edwin Edwards and other folks at the time. Some people voted for him (once) to make a statement of "none of the others" never thinking he'd actually make it as far as he did. He was, and is, an embarassment to Louisiana. And he is anti-Ron Paul, since David Duke is just as big an egocentric political junkie as the rest of the climbers are.

We are building an organization that will start taking control of the local republican party organizations, then the states, then the national GOP. It's going to take some time to retake the party from the Neoconmen and Religious Crusaders that have hijacked our party and our country, but if we start at the local level we can eventually restore the party of Reagan and Goldwater. Our eyes are now wide open on how serious it is that we take back our constitution and our country before our children suffer anymore.

I know Libertarian types will want to vote for Ron Paul in the primaries. But, come general election time if Paul is out and John Edwards, by some truly amazing chance, is the Dem nominee, vote for Edwards to voice your complaint with the Repub Establishment.

There is even a chance, putting aside the health care reform Edwards wants, that Edwards could go for some reduction in government which would please Libertarians.

Apparently 2/3 of all the provisionals cast were thrown out because they were not registered Republican. We're talking about 500-600 voters, most of which voted for RP delegates, and who are aware of our closed caucus/primary system.

The LA GOP knew that the majority of new Republicans are people that were formerly of other parties coming to the Paul camp, and used it to their advantage, in more ways than one. They also stated that their records only went to November 1, so people who registered Republican from Nov 1 to Nov 30, within the legal time frame, were forced to cast provisional. In my district, and I'm sure all of the districts followed suit, we kept records of all the people who had to vote provisional.

McCain should be running in Mexico. These are the only people he wants to serve. How many immigration reforms did he try and pass. Pay 3000 and your a citizen.
Rommny wants to deport but if you are here longer than others you get more time to leave.How do we know how long they have been here as criminals?
Also as a businessman he promoted outsourcing which if I remember means less jobs for the real Americans.

McCain said in California he would not vote for amnesty now. He said we have to build the fence first.What happens after the fence is built?
