Ronald Bailey on Glenn Beck Talking About Fracking and Climate Change

I will be on the Glenn Beck Show today talking about my recent column, "The Top 5 Lies About Fracking," and perhaps a bit on climate change temperature trends versus model projections. The show will air today at 5PM EDT.  My segment will hit sometime after the half hour mark. The show will replay at 8PM EDT. Those of you interested can go to TheBlaze.com and watch there--either live or when it's replayed. You may have to select a free trial to see it there. If you have Dish network it airs on the blaze channel.

Global satellite and weather balloon temperature trends versus climate model projections (1978 to 2025) from climatologist John Christy below.

The graphic above depicts the global lower troposphere temperature projections from 73 CMIP5 models from 1979 to 2025 compared to an average of the satellite data from UAH and RSS (blue boxes) and weather balloons (green circles) for the global lower troposphere temperatures since 1979 until now. Note nearly all the model runs project much warmer temperatures than the globe has recently experienced. The thick black line is the average projection of the 73 models.

    Can I get a fucking link to the full resolution image of that graph please?

  • Ron Bailey||

    AM: Could send you a bigger pdf - what's your email?

  • anon||

    Seriously, the pic of that chart is useless.

  • lafe.long||

    I've squinted at this mini graph before... I'd like to know which one of those projections was closest to reality (looks like 1 or 2 are actually pretty close).

    Pro Tip: Open pdf. Take screenshot. Save as jpg. Upload to somewhere we can see it. ;)

  • Almanian!||

    I hope you took some extra Kleenex or hankies in case Beck starts crying.

    /cheap shot

  • Almanian!||

    PS This is my *SHOCKED* face about the temperature graph. Global Warming? Bring it on.

  • ||

    Everyone KNOWS the last 15 years have been an anomaly. 15 years out of 35 is statistically insignificant and warming will surely resume IOW the models. After all, the science IS settled.

  • anon||

    I love how that's their actual argument; "well, half of the time frame's irrelevant."

  • ||

    The tack I have seen them taking lately is just to ignore measurements and proclaim it to now be hotter than it has ever been ever, and weather is more extreme than ever. Did you see that big tornado?

    The chocolate jesus has made those two claims himself since beating on the AGW drum recently.

  • ||

    Note nearly all the model runs project much warmer temperatures than the globe has recently experienced.

    I'm shocked. Shocked, I say.

  • anon||

    Obviously something's wrong with the way we're measuring the temps. They must need adjusting.

  • Raven Nation||

    +1

  • anon||

    Damnit! I just cancelled my satellite TV cause there's never anything I want to see on. Oh well...

  • RightNut||

    Not really a fan of Beck but I'll try to deal with his preaching long enough to hear you talk Mr. Bailey.

  • anon||

    It's not actually Beck tonight, it's Stu, who I like more anyways. Stu's pretty funny usually.

  • RightNut||

    I guess I don't listen to "Rethugican hate radio" enough, who is Stu?

  • anon||

    Kinda hard to explain; on the radio show it's 3 guys, Beck Pat and Stu, Stu does most of the production work.

    If you ever listened to Boortz, Stu is to Beck as Belinda was to Boortz.

  • anon||

    Also, Beck's show is usually one of the better ones. Sometimes I can't take the religious bullshit he spews, but it's better than the GOP cheerleaders that are Limbaugh and Hannity.

  • fish||

    First you destroy the "Dunphy Signal" on another thread and now to top that you detonate the "Shreeky Signal" as well.

    Most be a slow day at the home office?!

    PS: BUTT CHRIST FAGPLUG

  • anon||

    Just needs to ignite the abortion signal and he's got a trifecta!

  • Swiss Servator - past LTC(ret)||

    Needz moar deep dish pizza!

    *ducks and runs from room*

  • ||

    OT

    Gotta love hot nerdy chicks with big brains who play with guns!

  • anon||

    Hot nerdy chicks playing with guns is never off topic.

  • Swiss Servator - past LTC(ret)||

    Seconded.

  • ||

    Yes, you do. Yum.

  • ||

    I was delighted to hear Thom Hartmann argue that fracking is a Bad Thing because it creates methane, and every methane molecule creates four CO2 molecules when it breaks down in the atmosphere.

  • ||

    Huh? Whut?

    I heard greenie proclaim once that the solution to making coal a clean fuel is to simply remove the carbon from it before burning it.

    I shit you not.

  • anon||

    I heard greenie proclaim once that the solution to making coal a clean fuel is to simply remove the carbon from it before burning it.

    Wow. That's new levels of stupid.

  • Cytotoxic||

    WOW.

  • BakedPenguin||

    That's still better than octane which, by his math, creates 32 CO2 molecules.

  • ||

    Oh, and Ron, I usually avoid watching Beck, but I will make an exception for you.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    Fox News fired him. He was giving the news guy there a bad reputation.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    The president gets it, but a lot of activists don't. (from the linked article about Five Lies)

    You can't say that on the Beckerhead's show. They are heavily invested in the "OBAMA WON'T LET US DRILL HERE" lie.

  • Cytotoxic||

    They won't allow more drilling on public land.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    That is not true at all.

    Just last quarter Obama has leased over 200,000 acres of federal land.

    http://wilderness.org/resource.....qualground

    Really, quit listening to wingnut radio. They lie constantly.

  • ||

    And wilderness.org is completely non-biased.

    God you are a piece of shit.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    Here, dumbass. Facts are facts.

    http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/pr.....sales.html

  • ||

    Ummm. Here assfucker.

    Permits went from 7K in 07 to 4K 09-12.

  • R C Dean||

    Leased for exploration is a very long way from production, with many, many opportunities for bureaucratic roadblcks and shenanigans.

  • Palin's Buttplug||

    True sometimes.

    But there is a lengthy list of new federal leases going back to 2009.

    http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/pr.....sales.html

    Obama is like Mr. Oil and Gas. We are in an explosive wave of Exploration/Production not seen since the early 80s.

  • anon||

    We are in an explosive wave of Exploration/Production not seen since the early 80s.

    In spite of Obuttfucker's best efforts to the contrary.

  • Raven Nation||

    I haven't done enough research on this to agree or disagree with PBP's argument. However, I remember hearing a CATO brief a few months back which essentially agreed with the idea that Obama has been a lot more "Mr. Oil and Gas" in reality than his rhetoric would suggest.

  • Tony||

    Few climate scientists have been as notoriously erroneous in their work as Christy and Spencer. Climate misinformer: John Christy. This unreadable chart is also problematic.

  • fish||

    Oooh....look who's checking in to complain that the conventional wisdom is being challenged.

    Color me surprised!

  • ||

    Dude, the consensus (of climate scientist) is settled.

  • Tony||

    My complaint is that Bailey thinks that these repeatedly disgraced former denier outliers provide all you guys need to know about climate science. Science is not a branch of politics.
