Brickbat: That's a Woman, Baby

The state of Georgia recently required that residents provide a host of documentation to obtain or renew a driver's license. That's how Nakia Grimes, 36, found herself getting a copy of her birth certificate for the first time. It's also how she found that her birth certificate lists her as a male. Grimes thought it would be simple to get it changed. But a state vital records employee insisted she would need to have a Pap smear, get a doctor's note, have that note notarized and bring it back before they would make the change. After she complained to more senior executives, however, they agreed that the fact she is listed on her son's birth certificate as the mother is enough to prove she is a woman.

    I presume this is in part because of that Real ID shit?

    Sounds like it's designed as a big moneymaker for government, forcing people to spend for copies of their birth certificates.

  • RBS||

    Don't forget about the notaries!

  • Free Society||

    In most states notaries are forbidden from making more than a few dollars per transaction. If you find a notary, chances are that it's a lawyer or insurance agent who does it merely as a courtesy to the clients they DO make money from.

  • Tonio||

    My bank requires that its officers (branch managers and asst mgrs) be notaries.

  • UnCivilServant||

    Huh, well, it was only $10 when I needed a copy to get my passport, and that was in the fee laden cess pit of New York state. What's the fee in Georgia?

  • Cdr Lytton||

    Sounds like it. It gets even better. If you current name doesn't match your birth certificate, you have to bring in documentation to support the change. Have fun if you've married and divorced multiple times and took the spouse's name each time.

  • Monty Crisco||

    FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE. My state - a fucking RED state, no less, putting all this bullshit in place. Recently I tried to get my license there and let me tell you, THREE times I had to go to that fucking DMV just to get a new license. WTF?!? Everyone from Georgia should be fucking ashamed of themselves. I know I am.

  • Matrix||

    tell us how you REALLY feel

  • RBS||

    It's funny that you think a RED state would somehow be better than a BLUE state. They're all STATES.

  • Night Elf Mohawk||

    Yes, California is just like Texas.

  • Ted S.||

    Two giant populations of arrogant assholes who think their state is better than any other? :-)

  • Night Elf Mohawk||

    Oh, sure, there are similarities.

    Still, the idea that the two categories are "perfect" and "imperfect" and there are no gradations seems a bit flawed.

  • mad libertarian guy||

    I can assure everyone that both CA and TX are both imperfect in innumerable ways.

  • Night Elf Mohawk||

    Ya think?

    Does that mean they are both imperfect in the same ways or to the same degree?

  • Rich||

    Here ya go, Monty.

  • Adam330||

    These ID requirements are a red state fetish because we need to stop the ILLEGALS and the TERRORISTS.

  • ||

    And, apparently, the cross dressers!

  • ||

    This discriminates against all those transgendered women who were actually born male and are unable to give birth.

  • Matrix||

    nature does this all the time. We should sue mother nature

  • ||

    I think 'people who want to sue reality' ought to be the definition of a liberal.

  • ||

    I clicked through and saw her photo. To be fair, she could pass for a shemale

  • AlmightyJB||

    Or something

  • Live Free or Diet||

    "Or something" is right. Ew. Now I have to figure out how to un-see that.

  • RBS||

    Covered yesterday. dunphy says it's all cool...

  • itsnotmeitsyou||

    Yeah, you just don't understand how important it is for the cops to be able to stop and search any citizen just because they want to. Besides, they wouldn't have to do these fake searches if people would just let them put up actual search points. Then they'd catch ALL the criminals and not just the dumb ones.

  • Ted S.||

    Why does RBS hate America?

  • itsnotmeitsyou||

    And childrenz, don't forget them. He REALLY hates them. Doesn't he know that if those icky drugs even get within 100 yards of a child, they automatically become addicted and will eventually be forced into a gang or prostitution.

  • AlmightyJB||

    They could always come work in my diamond mines. One lucky one may get to be my top hat and monocle fetcher.

  • AlmightyJB||

    I'm glad that was all cleared up. Thanks Dunphy.

  • itsnotmeitsyou||

    No problem. Glad to keep you peasants in the know on important Stassi err, Police matters. Now show your papers to the nice officer over there and be on your way, citizen.

  • AlmightyJB||

    Thank you for violating my rights. Freedom is sooooo scary.

  • itsnotmeitsyou||

    There, there. *pats your head* Don't worry. Your masters will watch over you and make sure you don't make any choices that may harm you. Within a few years, we'll be able to make all your decisions for you, good or bad. Progress!

  • sarcasmic||

    Dunphy did his usual shit of saying it's lawful and that's all that matters.
    This is the same guy who decries the war on drug users, as he cheerfully enforces laws that he knows to be immoral and unjust.
    As long as it's lawful then it's OK, except when it isn't. But it is. Always. Except when it's not. But even then it is. See?

  • UnCivilServant||

    My head hurts and my sarcasm meter is still broken, so I have no idea what you just said.

  • itsnotmeitsyou||

    Dunphy Derp

    TR:DR

    It's legal because we gave ourselves permission. It doesn't matter that it violates innocent people's rights, it's LEGAL!

  • Rich||

    So, am I to understand that *her* birth certificate is wrong, yet the state considers her *son's* birth certificate to be correct? Talk about your patriarchal male chauvinism!

  • Ted S.||

    Finnish doesn't have separate words for "he" and "she". Perhaps we should just mark everybody on their birth certificates as being an "it".

  • Rich||

    IT'S ALIVE!!

  • Ted S.||

    I should add that Finnish has a third-person pronoun for animate objects (hän, the one for "he/she"), and a separate third-person pronoun for inanimate objects (se, roughly corresponding to "it").

  • sarcasmic||

    Friend of mine told me a story of how he got his ass kicked by a she-male. He was walking home from the bars in Boston and asked what appeared to be a hooker in fishnet stockings "How much?" but when it turned around it was a man, like Twisted Sister style. Well, a fight ensued, rolling out into the street. At some point my friend got the upper hand, but then a bunch of college guys ran up to be all chivalrous and shit. My friend is yelling "It's a man! It's a fucking man!" but they didn't notice or care as they pulled my friend off and the she-male slinked away into the darkness.

  • Ted S.||

    As if this really happened to "a friend". ;-)

  • itsnotmeitsyou||

    Friend of mine told me a story of how he I got his my ass kicked fucked by a she-male. He I was walking home from the bars in Boston and asked what appeared to be a hooker in fishnet stockings "How much?" but when it turned around it was a man, like Twisted Sister style. My friend is I was yelling "It's a man! It's a I'm fucking a man!" but they didn't notice or care as they pulled my friend me off and the she-male slinked away into the darkness.

    Much more believable now. You're welcome.

  • sarcasmic||

    As a good libertarian I see no reason why prostitution should be illegal, though it is something I would never participate in.

  • itsnotmeitsyou||

    Hey, I wasn't judging, just making the story more believable and interesting...

  • Robert||

    I'm trying to figure out why they wanted a Pap. I'm guessing they first wanted a pelvic exam, then figured out that to ethically justify giving one, the doctor had to do something diagnostic as well.

  • RightofCenter||

    It's probably a good idea to check birth certificates right when you get them. My oldest son's Georgia certificate had him as a female. Anticipating such a ridiculous situation years later, I insisted they change it. The rude worker in the hospital kept trying to get me to sign for it as is and change it later. After what was too much confrontation over such a simple issue, she relented.
