Cast Your Vote for the Best Cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Friday fun link embedded videos: three covers of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," each famous among fans of viral ephemera. Vote for your favorite in the comments. The winner gets a hit movie, a floppy disc to eat, or a night in jail.

Contestant #1, fortified by alcohol, is defying the state at maximum volume:

Contestant #2, fortified by electricity, is preparing for the Singularity:

Contestant #3, fortified by felt, is magnifying the song's nostalgic '70s appeal:

Feel free to write in additional competitors in the comments. But I'm going to preemptively disqualify the clip that clumsily intercuts scenes from Wayne's World with the original video. We have to establish some standards.

    Obviously it's the Muppets. What a stupid question.

  • ||

    It's almost as if he's fucking with us or something. I mean, to even ask such a question is retarded.

  • benji||

    But...Shatner...

  • ||

    MUPPETS UBER ALLES

  • benji||

    When Shat leads the secret Northern Forces down to conquer us after the Great Default, where will your precious muppets be?

  • benji||

    There won't be enough Masters in Puppetry to keep them on the frontlines!

  • PACW||

    :)

  • PACW||

    :)

  • sarcasmic||

    Definitely

  • John||

    The muppets are usually the answer regardless of the question.

  • ||

    The muppets are usually the answer regardless of the question.

    Who would you rather see naked: the Muppets or the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders?

  • Tman||

    Seriously dude, Animal? Come on. This shouldn't even be a discussion. He's probably just fucking with us.

  • benji||

    Shatner v. Muppets

  • sarcasmic||

    "Mamma! Mamma! Mammaaaaaa!"

  • Tman||

    To this day my favorite Muppet. Hands down. Dude was awesome.

  • sarcasmic||

    What about the chef?

  • Tman||

    Chef was awesome, but animal had a chain around his neck all the time because when he got loose he would go crazy.

    Plus animal did a drum duet with Buddy Rich. He wins.

    http://youtu.be/n_BmeBfV-O4

  • Loki||

    Too bad he mauled Ed McMahon during a Star Search appearance. Just because Ed said he looked like an epilectic ragdoll.

  • Tman||

    Too bad? That just makes me like him more.

  • Lord Humungus||

    You know for a magazine called Reason...

  • John||

    I love Queen. Freddie Mercury was one of the great front men and entertainers of all time. If you could have a fantasy American Idol where you took say the 24 best entertainers of the last 50 years, Mercury would be a real threat to win. Absolutely operatic voice.

    It is a shame that song got over played so much. It is really a brilliant song. The measure of a truely great pop song is whether it does something that if tried under any other circumstances by a performer of anything but great talent would completely fail. There is no way an 8 minute long rock song with straight up operatic elements should have ever been a hit much less a number one song.

    And for the record, the most famous cover of Bohemian Rhapsody was done by Styx. They just changed the name and called it Renegade.

  • sarcasmic||

    I agree with Homer about Styx.

  • $park¥||

    Can't you just pick one of the videos?

  • Sudden||

    One of the most amazing aspects of this song is that it was written a decade before Freddy was diagnosed as HIV positive, but the song makes a damn-near almost perfect metaphor for AIDS, it almost seems some sort of divine precognition.

  • $park¥||

    If only there was a band that combined rock and operatic elements around these days.

  • JW||

    John--I saw them in '79 on the News of the World tour. It was a fantastic show and I wish that I had some actual memories of the event, but it was probably the most stoned I have ever been in my life.

  • John||

    They came through Kansas City in 82. And I being a bone headed middle schooler didn't have the sense or the money to go. I would love to have seen them.

  • BakedPenguin||

    Mercury did love opera. I caught the end of a VH1 bio of him last weekend, and one of the last things he did was a concert (and recording?) with an opera singer.

  • Hugh Akston||

    Putting other videos up against the Muppets is like that time Episiarch competed in the special Olympics. He was beat by a mile in every event, just like the non-Muppet videos.

  • ||

    Well, Hugh, I was trying to post a link to Cartman in the Special Olympics, and it seems the spam filter will absolutely not let that happen. Like, fuck you no way no how. So go look it up yourself. Jerk.

  • Hugh Akston||

    Sure, blame the spam filter, just like you blamed Cory Fitzwalter for tripping you during the 100m sprint.

  • Sudden||

    The drunk singing while being carted away for DUI was also charged with first degree murder on the basis of his "testimony."

  • ||

    Hahaha I thought the same thing! As soon as he sang "mama, I just killed a man..." I was like "oh my god that's gonna end up booked as a confession!"

  • Sudden||

    Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

  • RPR2||

    it was the RCMP. everything was very civilized, handcuffs optional. probably gave him tea and drove him home with a stern admonishment.

  • Whiterun Guard||

    Fat Bottomed Girls would be a better competition.

    And I don't even mean the song.

  • Fatty Bolger||

    +1 John

  • Eduard van Haalen||

    I vote for the Muppets out of principle, and I guess I'm with the crowd on this one.

  • $park¥||

    I'm voting for #2 in hopes that Skynet will notice and have some pity on me.

  • MichaelG||

    Adding a fun new entry: Hayseed Dixie.
    Best new cover since the Muppets.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAWl5peI8HY

  • ||

    OK, I like this one.

  • benji||

    Wait, wait, wait, how was Shatner's version not included?!?

    It even has an official video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKo4FMzt_hM

  • rts||

    Well, that's enough Internet for today.

  • Sudden||

    When Shatner boycotts Chick-Fil-A, then he'll get his street cred with the cosmotarians. Until then, he lacks the Muppets' cosmo cred.

  • Zeb||

    Oh my. I didn't realize that the Muppets had an opinion of Chik-fil-a.

  • Stormy Dragon||

    The Jim Henson Company was making the toys for Chick-fil-a's kids meals, so when Cathy went full-retard in the news, they pretty much had to have an opinion.

  • Pro Libertate||

    I'll have no dealings with those that diminish the Shat. With all due respect to the Muppets.

  • Fatty Bolger||

    Well, that does it! I'm going for the shat!

    And when I get back I'll decide who I'm voting for.

  • sloopyinca||

    **rimshot**

  • sloopyinca||

    How about finding the worst version of a song ever with the word Queen mentioned.

  • ||

    FUCK YOU I LOVE ABBA!!!

  • ||

    I went looking for terrible metal covers of the song, and I found one that adds absolutely nothing to the original. The casual listener wouldn't even know that it's a cover. It's amazing.

    And then I found something truly, truly, truly terrible. Spectacular.

  • Rich||

    Ha! Your second one is a recording by the Arrested Drunk Guy. What do *I* win?

  • ||

    The second one has more likes than dislikes, how is that possible?

  • Stormy Dragon||

    What about Weird Al's polka verison?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZsN3S0WJ_o

  • sloopyinca||

    Actually, I'd like to make a correction to the above.

    This is the worst fucking video ever made. Not sure if spoof.

  • Rich||

    You've tried the rest; now try the best.

  • sloopyinca||

    Man, that dude in the bed at :15 is gonna throw his back out or get an aneurysm if he doesn't pace himself.

  • Pro Libertate||

    I vote for the one with Dr. Zaius, Cornelius, and Bright Eyes. If there isn't one, I demand it. I DEMAND IT!

  • JW||

    Thunderbolts and lightening, very, very frightening!
    Momma-momma, Momma-momma!
    Momma-momma, Momma-momma!
    Forbidden Zo-o-O-O-O-O-n-e!

  • Pro Libertate||

    Is this the real world?
    Is this just fantasy?
    Caught in a shipcrash,
    No escape from reality.
    Broken Bright Eyes,
    Look up to the skies and see.

    I'm just a poor boy,
    I need no sympathy,
    Because I'm the Beast Called Man,
    Beast must go,
    Little high, little low.
    Anyway the firehose,
    Doesn't really matter to me,
    To me.

  • Pro Libertate||

    I see a little simulacrum of a man.
    Dirty apes, dirty apes, to the zoo I goddamn you.
    Water hose and ape-talking
    Very very frightening to me.
    Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius,
    Dr. Zaius, Dr. Zaius,
    Dr. Zaius, asshole - magnifico!

    But I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me.
    He's just a poor boy from a past history,
    Spare him his life from this mad house he sees.

    Easy come, easy go - will you let me go.
    Lawgiver! No - we will not let you go - let him go.
    Lawgiver! We will not let you go - let him go.
    Lawgiver! We will not let you go - let me go.
    Will not let you go - let me go (never).
    Never let you go - let me go.
    Never let me go - ooo.
    No, no, no, no, no, no, no -
    Oh, hot for Nova, hot for Nova, hot for Nova, let me go.
    Dr. Zaius has a statue put aside for me.
    For me.
    For me.

  • sarcasmic||

    Mass cop fired for calling Red Sox player a "Monday".

    Now if he's assaulted or murdered him there would be no problem, but calling him a "Monday"?

    Fire his ass!

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/new.....onday.html

  • sloopyinca||

    Monday Monday, so good to me,
    Monday Monday, it was all I hoped it would be
    Oh Monday morning, Monday morning couldn't guarantee
    That Monday evening you would still be here with me.

    Monday Monday, can't trust that day,
    Monday Monday, sometimes it just turns out that way
    Oh Monday morning, you gave me no warning of what was to be
    Oh Monday Monday, how could you leave and not take me.

    Every other day, every other day,
    Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
    But whenever Monday comes, but whenever Monday comes
    You can find me cryin' all of the time

    Monday Monday, so good to me,
    Monday Monday, it was all I hoped it would be
    Oh Monday morning, Monday morning couldn't guarantee
    That Monday evening you would still be here with me.

    Every other day, every other day,

    Monday Monday, ...

    Were The Mamas And The Papas no more than a front for White Power? Or are they victims of a sexual liaison gone wrong?

    Either way, that dude was lucky Mama Cass didn't smother him to death.

  • Pro Libertate||

    Crawford was an outstanding player with the Rays. What the heck happened?

  • Hugh Akston||

    That's weird, because calling him a Red Sox player is a way worse insult.

  • ||

    So we're making up offensive meanings for established functioning words now?

    Well, you're all a bunch of collaborations who can laminate my clinic...

  • Pro Libertate||

    So how do I now refer to the second day of the week? Shitday?

  • sarcasmic||

    That's what I call it.

  • $park¥||

    Why don't you go recategorize your paradigm shift you soft-shelled meatloaf!

  • BakedPenguin||

    Wow, you othered him good.

  • ||

    Anyone remember the New Twilight Zone episode where words start meaning different things and the the guy has to relearn the language?

  • Pro Libertate||

    Samothrace.

  • ||

    So what are they calling Asians now?

  • ||

    "The Ones Without Their Own Network"

  • ||

    You mean CBS Asian Town isn't real?

  • ||

    California Guitar Trio
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNNcMDZn2Qk
    Their version of Tubular Bells is also nice.

  • ||

    I long thought that the Easiest Job in Music was guitarist for a reggae band. I have decided the honor goes to Ozzy. All he has to do to earn a paycheck is stand there and suck.

  • Whiterun Guard||

    Give him a break, the man's over 10,000 years old.

  • BakedPenguin||

    I still think 'Cowbell girl for Latin dance band'.

  • Loki||

    "I need more cowbell!"

    For some reason my links aren't imbeding today.

  • Stormy Dragon||

    Careful, the meta-hipsters are gonna come down on you for posting a uke video. ;

  • Killazontherun||

    'meta-hipster', I like that. Describes my nephew perfectly. Complains about them all the time, but wont shave the fug ugly Galifianakis beard.

  • nipplemancer||

    get rid of the 'feature=related' That seems to confuse reasonable.

  • benji||

    This isn't a cover, but when you look for them on youtube, this for some reason shows up in the results:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc6vs-l5dkc
    (which was amusing for the censoring)

    But so does this so it may be a wash:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uguXNL93fWg

    I once remember the YouTube "sort by view count" results being more relevant than this.

  • benji||

    "closing the ***damn door!"

    I think NBC was doing this a few years ago, censoring out "god" and leaving the damn part.

  • Sukey||

    I'm partial to this version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU-Uwl7AZ7o

  • sloopyinca||

    CPS needs to take those kids away from that idiot of a father. Every good parent breaks their kids up into the various parts of the song rather than have them sing all of the words.

    This man is a fucking monster.

  • Sam Grove||

  • BakedPenguin||

    sloopy linked him above.

  • Sam Grove||

    Sloopy linked to Rob Clifford, twice.

  • Loki||

    Best Muppet cover would have to be this.

  • Sam Grove||

    A long time ago, when Jim Henson was in Baltimore, he did a Kermit cover of "Beep, beep" in a segment of a local tv news program. Kermit was in a car followed by another Muppet (or maybe Kermit was chasing the other Muppet, this was over 50 years ago) with a spinning globe in the background for special effect.
    Here's a youtube of Beep, Beep performed by the Playmates: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDSk4zwjg5A

  • livertarian||

    These are all good. I also love the The Manualist's version. That's some skill brah!
