New Poll Finds Concerns About Big Government Near All-Time High

Gallup released new poll results showing that 64 percent of Americans say Big Government is the biggest threat to the country in the future. Only 26 percent say that Big Business is the biggest threat and 8 percent say the threat is Big Labor.

Gallup first began asking this question in 1965. At that time, 35 percent said Big Government was the greatest threat, 17 percent said Big Business, and 29 percent said Big Labor. Now concerns have coalesced around Big Government, while concerns have significantly diminished regarding Big Labor.

  • Gojira||

    Can we drop the whole polling emphasis? Polls show people are worried about big government...and then they will go and en masse vote for bigger government, QED.

    Polls are nearly meaningless. This is just like those polls McDonald's ran before trotting out their "healthy" fare, that showed some statistically significant percentage of people stated they would eat salads and wraps, only to have the actual percentage of those items sold come in at less than half what the poll indicated they would.

  • ||

    Jimbo is 100% correct. I do not understand how anyone takes polls even remotely seriously.

  • ||

    Well, y'all are in the minority because I've read that 72% of the population take polls very seriously.

    It must be easy to make comments like this when you can ignore FACTS. I'm sure everyone here who lives in the "frightening" world of Reasonland probably "knows" that there's some double standard, some special set of rules for law enforcement, but the FACT is ANY PERSON who gets into an accident like this would face the very same consequence of having his government-provided vehicle almost certainly possibly taken away for some period of time maybe.

    And futher, when that perhaps happens, and that marked vehicle can no longer be displayed prominently in that citizen's driveway, burglars will no longer know that citizen's house is a special, protected home.

    36%? You are way way too generous.

  • Tony||

    It's clear what this means: people who think big government are the biggest threat to the country's future are, in fact, the biggest threat to the country's future. Irrational fears are the biggest threat to the to any country's future.

    Sooooo, an almost 2/3 majority of the country is the biggest threat to the country?

    You're a fucking moron, Tony.
    A. Fucking. Moron.

  • Tony||

    Since a majority elected Bush, twice, and supported his disastrous war in Iraq and his dangerous libertarians policies, I would say the answer to your questions is yes, the majority is a threat to this country.

    How could you hope to reduce government at those levels without dealing with the damage caused by SEIU et al?

    Big Government enables and provides cover for both Big Business and Big Government. So it makes sense that people zero in on it as the Big Threat.

    You get a lot of people who say big government is the problem but are totally down with the WOD and the WOT and especially down with things like smoking bans. I was talking to some guy from out of state and he was railing against big government, then he says his big thing is that people who get welfare checks should have to take drug test. I'm like, what kind of bureaucracy needs to be created to administer that, how much is it going to cost, and is the cost worth the benefit. he didn't really care. That's a total lack of understanding about what big government is and how it pertpetuates itself. I really think a lot of is that people think things should be "fair" and that somehow the force of government can be used to make everyting fair. It's shit of course. Fair is a made up word that doesn't exist in reality.

  • Ayn Rand ||

    In the absence of any rational criteria of judgment, people attempted to judge the immensely complex issues of free market by so superficial a standard as "bigness." You hear it to this day: "big business," "big government," or "big labor" are denounced as threats to society, with no concern for the nature, source, or function of the "bigness," as if size as such were evil. This type of reasoning would mean that a "big" genius like Edison, and a "big" gangster, like Stalin, were equal malefactors: one flooded the world with immeasurable values and the other with incalculable slaughter, but both did it on a very big scale.

  • AlmightyJB||

    I think it has more to do with large concentrations of (too much?) power which very well can be a threat. That's well understood and is why be have three branches of government (collusion not withstanding).

    Remember, honey?

  • ||

    I don't know. Yes that is how Big Government perpetuates itself, but I don't think it is totally off base to tell someone that if you are going to take this stolen money to ostensibly feed your children, you have to prove you aren't pissing it away on drugs and booze.

    Obviously the correct answer is to not give people money you stole from someone else.

    That led me to this video. The funny thing is, the dumbass that made this doesn't see the logic in what Paul is saying. Perhaps a few comments are in order?

  • Gojira||

    Youtube comments? I'd rather get trunked by a syphilitic bear.

  • ||

    Oh, I thought NBC News actually produced it in lieu of Meet The Press. My bad.

  • Coeus||

    This one is pretty good also:

  • Coeus||

    Good as in it makes a point about how profit motive is better than the alternative. Though I don't think the writers knew exactly what they were saying.

  • Heroic Mulatto||

    I dunno, I've always suspected Ira Steven Behr as being a crypto-libertarian. He single-handedly rehabilitated the Ferengi from absurd stereotype to interesting alien culture and meta-narrative vehicle to question Roddenberry's "utopia".

    Ehh, not sure about that. I just watched all the DS9 episodes earlier this year, and aside from one or two easily misinterpreted throw-away lines, profit motive was universally panned.

  • Rev. Blue Moon ||

    Woah, what about this? A whole strong rehab of the Ferengi and greed early on.

    And there was also that one where Nog and Jake end up going through a Byzantine trading process and wind up ahead. That was a pretty good "climb the ladder" ep.

  • Coeus||

    Woah, what about this?

    I already posted that. Like I said, a few throw-away lines. And the climb the ladder ep seemed to have the take-away that only the very clever could ever get ahead in a capitalist system. Not exactly a shinning endorsement.

  • Rev. Blue Moon ||

    It's always good to see Weyoun get work.

  • PantsFan||

    Yes, Rooney Mara, I'll do whatever you say.

  • ||

    I have a completely worthless bachelor's degree in Theatre. But, godamn I have fond memories of my college days.

  • ||

    Not even the Keebler Elves could pack as much fudge as there was packed after that scene got done filming.

    Not even close.

  • Gojira||

    That's kind of how my college was, except for more nudity and stray cats.

  • ||

    I didn't know you went to Texas A&M.

  • Gojira||

    Hsss...our arch-rivals. Glad to see them humiliated this year, and I picked against them in the bowl pool.

  • chris||

    I bet I could have punched my way through that cast. Not that I'm a tuff gai, but to quote Homer Simpson when Bart asked him how he defeated the giant killer flower, 'son, it was a flower.'

  • PantsFan||

    I don't care if they collapsed, they still wrote the best anthem of all time.
    ALL TIME!

  • Gojira||

    It is pretty awesome and stirring.

    Russia had to reword it and use the same tune, because they bounced around a few songs post-breakup, but none of them were as cool.

  • Gojira||

    I wonder if chris ever got to watch that video?

  • ||

    I hope so. I hate for a new poster to not be in on all the funny shit we find on YouTube.

  • PantsFan||

    Even after 8 viewings, the joke never gets old.

  • ||

    Shit, I thought I was the only one that kept watching it. It's up there with that Klingon Eminem video.

  • Gojira||

    It'd be awesome to see it redone, only using the guys from that Klingon rap video. Nerd out!

  • chris||

    I gotta do it over. I didn't pass the damn Turing test used to stump bots! Fucking wavy pixelated words!

  • ||

    I just hope Banjos doesn't give up on me cause she thinks I'm a homo. My knowledge of musicals is starting to come out.

  • Gojira||

    Banjos, don't worry. I have never seen sloopy's name or email on any of the homo email lists or phone trees which I belong to, much to my wife's chagrin.

  • ||

    I still think of you fondly.

  • ||

    And we've got 24 people signed up for the Reason Hit & Run College Bowl Pick-em. Not bad for 24 hours.

    I'm gonna beg and plead for one more day and see what we get up to. Still can't believe no Tulpa, Pro Lib or Epi. I thought those guys for sure would be in. Pussies.

  • PantsFan||

    Now it shows 25

  • ||

    Some dude named David came on board.

    Wow, that's pretty good for that short a time frame. Still, it'd be nice if Riggs or one of the other staff would play. What would it take? 20 minutes of their time to register and make their picks? The fucks.

  • ||

    This trip down musical lane has reverted me back to my childhood.

    Look at this stuff
    Isn't it neat?
    Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
    Wouldn't you think I'm the girl
    The girl who has everything?
    Look at this trove
    Treasures untold
    How many wonders can one cavern hold?
    Looking around here you think
    Sure, she's got everything
    I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty
    I've got whozits and whatzits galore
    You want thingamabobs?
    I've got twenty!
    But who cares?
    No big deal
    I want more

  • ||

  • ||

    They were forced to go subliminal.

  • ||

    So long, farewell, goodnight, dear sloopy. Unfortunately, I have to be up early tomorrow. Otherwise, I would bullshit with you until the morning.

  • ||

    The Donald Duck "Fuck You!" is an old favorite.

    BTW, I decided on the PS3. Got it today. With the Move controller and Let's Dance 4 for $300 bucks at Target. Alas, I will not be on the X-Box Live network unless I end up buying that in a month or so.

  • ||

    Ah, damn. But still a good choice. Look me up if you ever get an X-Box. We can watch Voyagers together and MST3K them.

  • Coeus||

    You need to get both of the Batman games, Mass Effect 2 (if you haven't already played it on pc) and the entire God of War series.

  • ||

  • Most libs/most conservatives||

    We're concerned, all right... concerned that government is too small.

  • ||

    The country is becoming a public school writ large with all of us being treated like school children. Conservatives don't mind a little rough and tumble on the playground so long no one's lunch money gets stolen and there's no hanky-panky in the bushes.

    Liberals don't mind a little hanky-panky in the bushes so long everyone plays nice and everyone with lunch money shares with everyone without. Even if the ones without spent theirs on candy on the way to school.

    And both sides are more than willing to use the force of government to insure their preferred reality prevails.

  • imhotep||

    The last time concerns about big government were at this high a level was in 2001. The feds must be really appreciative that Mohammed Atta and company got everybody to believe in big government again, even if it was only fleeting.

  • ||

    lol, is anyone actually surprised? I mean seriously.
