Reasoners on the Tube: Nick Gillespie on Payroll Tax Cuts
I was on Fox Business yesterday and talked with Charles Payne about the current fight over payroll tax cuts. My basic points were these: The payroll tax cut has had no stimulative effect and hasn't done diddly with regards to employment. The one upside? If the cuts are extended without corresponding cuts in Social Security benefits, it just might wake people up to what a phoney-baloney mandatory retirement system we've got.

Payroll tax cuts do "more harm than good"? To whom, the people that get to keep more of their own goddamn money?
So what if the taxcuts are small and it won't stimulate the economy? If the people who get to keep more of their own money want to eat it and shit it out in a field of daisies, that's their prerogative. It's private property.
Why is a libertarian arguing against tax cuts, period?
Maybe they'll have some unseen consequences caused by the government, but then criticize the government for those unseen consequences they cause, not the taxcuts.

Of course they've done nothing to stimulate the economy. People are too afraid to spend their money. That doesn't mean the government should keep it though.

What Joe said. Plus the payroll tax REALLY blows when you're working minimum wage...at that level there's a huge difference in quality of life between taking home $280 a week and taking home $300.

Nick Gillespie attacks tax cuts and views savings as bad. What is the libertarian part of his position?
He also speaks with uncharacteristic nervousness.
The payroll tax cut, paid for borrowing (and monetary expansion) is a monetarist-libertarian form of economic stimulus. The massive drop in housing prices is the main drag on the US economy. Falling prices are even more harmful than rising prices. Putting money in the hands of ordinary people to spend is the simplest of counteracting low housing prices. At the current extremely low interest rates, there is no sign of government borrowing crowding out private borrowing.
