How School Choice & Privatization Can Help Fix America: Lisa Snell & Harris Kenny at FreedomFest

"School choice is winning, in America, folks," argues Reason Foundation education analyst Lisa Snell, who tallies up all the ways that voucher programs, charter schools, and more are making incredible improvements in the quality of American education. "We're broke," explains her Reason colleague, Harris Kenny, who says that privatizing and contracting-out many jobs done by public-sector employees will not only save money but increase service levels for taxpayers.

Snell and Kenny spoke as part of the first "Reason Day" at FreedomFest. Reason magazine editor and Declaration of Independents co-author Matt Welch moderates the discussion. Held each July in Las Vegas, FreedomFest is attended by around 2,000 libertarians and advocates of limited government. Reason.tv spoke with over two dozen speakers and attendees and will be releasing interviews over the coming weeks. For an ever-growing playlist, go here now.

    More competition is badly needed in education. An actual marketplace for schools, teachers, and administrators will yield better results when parents can exercise choices. End the federal department of education!

  • ||

    End government involvement in schooling entirely.

    If you must, give poor people a check but for gods sake keep the government out of schools.

    are making incredible improvements in the quality of American education.

    That's not true. W.R.T. actual education results (AKA "learning"), your linked document only mentions an anecdote - not data - about 4th grade reading in Florida; nothing else.
    FL is still below national average in most measures. That's not "incredible".

    Neither is this:

    Florida was one of just seven states where 8th grade reading scores improved. The state’s average score was above the national average, though not “significantly different” than the national mark, according to the NAEP report.

    Florida’s average 4th-grade score bumped up in 2009 but that increase was not considered “significantly different” from 2007.

    Credulous, not incredible.

    well of course privatization works when you listen to the statistics given by people who are clearly non-biased like these, just like the Bible is true because in the Bible it says it is being true.
