Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, is backing a state resolution that gives a shout-out to the 10th Amendment in these government-expanding times.
"I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state," Gov. Perry said. "That is why I am here today to express my unwavering support for efforts all across our country to reaffirm the states' rights affirmed by the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union."
Perry, you may recall, was also governor of Texas through George W. Bush's entire big-government and unduly regulatory presidency, when such public displays of constitutional affection (let alone rubber-meets-the-road legislation and governance, as opposed to mere chest-puffing) were much less in evidence from Republican politicians.
Brian Doherty wrote about why states should refuse stimulus money last month.

Indeed we would not be in this mess if someone in the GOP had been
making these arguements over the past 8 years (well other than Ron
Paul). Now valid arguments are given but they ring hollow coming
from massive statists like the Patriot Act lovin GOP.
Whering a pink shirt on the cover of Texas Monthly! By "learn to love Rick Perry" do they mean like in a 'totally masculine' cowboy kinda way?
True. But isn't this the change of tune that "we" hoped would happen if/when the Republicans got whipped in November '08?
Hey, whatever puts the brakes on this Obama bullshit. Like I
said, I hated Bush and didn't vote in 2008, but let's hear it
for...
Pat Robertson/Sarah Palin's Mongoloid Kid '12
a.k.a.
Anyone but the black guy '12
I keep hoping that the moment of being appalled at what the other guy does with increasingly unlimited power will knock some sense into one or both of the parties.

The lyrics may have changed, but the music and musicians are the
same. Get rid of all the current "republicans" and maybe I'll
consider the party rebuilt. Right now, all I hear is the whining of
the statists not in control of the state. If people really care
about the direction of their country, they'll force the bums out
and rebuild the party from the ground up. Otherwise, the bleating
of the wolf turned lamb about to be slaughtered will merely elicit
a bitterly ironic chuckle from me.
Gov Goodhair and the lege come late to the party, waving only a
toothless 'resoulution' in Leviathan's face.
Better to craft legislation that would weigh each and every flowing
fedzilla mandate on 10th amendment grounds and require Texas to
either toss it aside or put the lege on record as having approved
of un-Constitutional actions, rules and regs.
Texas was a land of giants but is reduced to a gaggle of mewling
pukes in Austin.
I keep hoping that the moment of being appalled at what the

If this past election has taught you anything, its that "hope" and
"change" are meaningless sounds that only mean something in an echo
chamber.
Meh. He's a fair-weather conservative, so that's better than
nothing.
And hey: if big-government Nixon could go to China, maybe these
finely hairstyled RINOs can go to Red DC.

What a juvinile attitude. Grow up.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...

yeaaah. nooooo.
:(
Perry is a tool. He gives way too much cover to the fundies and other no-nothings in this state. Too bad Kinky didn't win the governor's race. He might have sucked as well, but he would have been a lot more entertaining.
fundies
What does a devout Muslim man murdering his daughters for "honor"
in Texas have to do with Rick Perry?

Politicians are notable for their obliviousness regarding the Iron
Laws, especially including No. 5:
5. Any power used for you today will be used against you
tomorrow.
Speaking of laws, I'm seeking a ruling on whether this:
He gives way too much cover to the fundies and other
no-nothings in this state.
constitutes an instance of joe'z Memorial Law.
What is joe'z Memorial Law? Something Freudian, perhaps?
No-Nothings would be a great name for a libertarian rock band.
Joe'z Law is, when making fun of someone's intellect, you will make an intellectual/grammatical mistake that makes you look stupid.
"I keep hoping that the moment of being appalled at what the

I doubt it. It's okay for the government to have unlimited as long
as the right people (trademark disputed) are in power.
What is joe'z Memorial Law? Something Freudian,
perhaps?
It used to be joe'z law (Example: Get a brain, moran!), but with
his departure from these boards, I think it should be joe'z
Memorial Law.
What we need is someone..a nobody who has no life long ties to a political group or lobby group. Someone who is willing to put their life in front of the country and make the hard choices that we can not for fear of criticism. The people propose 1) Close the borders...close them for up to 3 months...nobody in or out (leave room for life/death emergencies, but baseically no...yes it is a hard choice)..Now clean out the trash....not that the people are trash, but illegals...gone or assimilated. Without the need of officers at the gates, they and the ARMY will be guarding our borders on a SHOOT TO MAIM, then KILL if neccessary. Also, DRUGs, GANGS, and Lords, and THAT war...without the illegal immigrant around, and other undesireables, local police with the aid of ICE, FBI, and other resources, big time crime and gangs can be handled, and eliminated with FORCE...yes a tough choice. 2) Government Foriegn AID will stop, and all debts called in. Without the shipping and sending of funds to countries that hate us, we can help take care of our own. The governmets will allow private organizations and churches to continue the cause for foriegn aid and ministry..and it will prosper....touch choice. 3)DRILL HERE AND THERE...we will drill for oil, and stop buying it from elsewhere, we will have enough for many years, and after a few years, the prices will drop in the Middle East, and we will be able to purchase oil at a discount, b/c they will have too much. 4) Mexico will reform its government or be annexed until it can run itself correctly. Mexico is one of the most wealthy countries in the Western Hemispere, but only 1% of the people have 99% of the money (#'s may be slightly off). We need to stop Mexico from unloading its problems on us, and help the TRUE MEXICAN people who love their country to take control of it and be successful...this is a tough choice...I can not do this myself, but if you believe in making tough choices, email me, and we will get the ball rolling for 2012 or 2016. One of my emails is triskiadeka13@hotmail.com
are you trying to say politicians are acting like hypocrites
that only criticize the other party not their own? Wow this is big
news indeed.
Now it's time to get out our pictures of Bush and have the two
minutes' hate.
"Tom DeLay's Bitch Lives Here"
Fuck Goodhair, his fair-weather conservatism, and every worthless
taint in Austin.

seriously the war on terror stuff was intrusive but, you can
understand the difference between basically dictating state budgets
through stimulus grants and evesdropping on people calling
suspected terrorist in foreign lands without a warrant. One affects
maybe a few hundred maybe a few thousand the other about 300-350
million americans, have a sense of proportion.
Dennis, if you give me your mailing address, I can give better instructions to the men in white coats
Too bad Perry's commitment to state sovereignty did not withstand the most recent $17 billion assault
Don't blame me, I voted for Kinky. Oddly, my wife, a die-hard
liberal, voted for Werner, the Libertarian candidate. Mostly
because he was the least jackass of the bunch. I figured that Kinky
was the least jackass of the bunch polling over 5%, and also, Why
the hell not?
Seriously, though, Perry's a grandstanding douchebag. At least Mark
Sanford talked the same talk during the Bush admin. Until there was
a -D in the White House, Perry never met a government program he
didn't love.
Hey Economist, You are so smart...what is your answer ? I have no hate, nor desire to spread the such...but you are right that it is thought to be crazy..but is there another solution....I think not...Why don't you come up with one...Oh wait..it is better to sell ourselves to foriegn nations, and allow them to come in and take apart this great nation. Do you think the gov't will fix itself, so you think that we are loved by all. I have been around the world, Have You ? other than a rich tourist ? have you lived in the caves and huts of 3rd world countries, have you looked down the barrel of a gun of others wishing to kill you, and trying to, and by the grace of God..the bullets miss. Have you had the guts to quit a good job, becasue your boss(es) decided to sell out to pressure and change a moral and ethical stance. Economist, if you have done these things, you might see the world as a different place, but the USA is the best place to be, and I will do anything in my power to keep it that way.....oh and by the way, those guys do not wear white coats anymore....Oh, here is my future address...Pennsylvania Ave, Wash. DC
