Sarah, Sarah, Whatever Made You Want to Change Your Mind?
The phrase of the week: "Free Sarah!" As the governor of Alaska edges closer and closer to the Island of Political Punch-Lines occupied by Dan Quayle and Fred Thompson, conservatives are insisting that Palin is actually a briliant political operator who's being ruined by bad advice from Team McCain. Bill Kristol insists that McCain "needs to liberate his running mate," and all will be, as Palin says, like, really cool.
I’m told McCain recently expressed unhappiness with his staff’s handling of Palin. On Sunday he dispatched his top aides Steve Schmidt and Rick Davis to join Palin in Philadelphia. They’re supposed to liberate Palin to go on the offensive as a combative conservative in the vice-presidential debate on Thursday.
That's a sensible spin. The last time Palin was effective, she
was reading a combative conservative speech (much of which was
written for whichever VP McCain decided on) at the RNC, all
slashing attacks on community organizers, high taxes, and book
learnin'. But it was, you know, a speech. Like the kind Barack
Obama makes, the kind that leads conservatives to mock
him for jellifying without a teleprompter. If Palin's been
faltering since then (hint: she has!), it's because she's not a
combative conservative. She's an affable, aw-shucks
conservative. That's how she got her 80 percent approval rating.
Witness some of her final 2006 gubernatorial debate and see if you
can locate the grenade-tosser whom Kristol is summoning.
Honestly, if that Palin shows up, conversant and unfazed, it'd be
better for the ticket than her trying to launch attack lines. If Al
Gore's disasters in 2000
taught us anything, it's that televised debates are not the times
to try on new personalities.
The GOP has already set up a difficult, potentially no-win scenario for themselves here. Sure, if Palin is more on-point than she has been in her national TV interviews, she'll benefit. But the GOP has spent far too much time building up Joe Biden as a "gaffe-o-matic" (which he sort of is) and a bumbler whom Obama should regret choosing as his VP. Palin herself mocked the choice and said Obama should have chosen Hillary Clinton. Instead of being built up as the debating savant that he is (did he lose any of the primary debates?) he's that sad sack who's going to get mauled by the Sarahcuda.

experience would have been better for the ticket. Somehow I think
McCain's stunningly incompetent campaign managers will fuck this up

Bipartisanship and ? Maverick McCain.
Dear concerned citizens of America and Mass Media of the
U.S.A.
As a concerned registered independent voter, forensic psychiatrist,
disabled American I made my decision to vote after taking into
consideration following joint tickets attributes and
characteristics.
1. Has the ticket shown adequate calmness, coolness, and
connectedness's under pressure to lead our nation [Presidential
Temperament]?
2. Has the ticket shown sustained sound "Judgment and
Caliber"?
3. Has the ticket shown adequate understanding of depth and degree
to address the crucial challenges in their their purpose, policies,
and positions [ Honesty, integrity and sincerity]?
4. Has the ticket sufficient "understanding and knowledge" of
inside Washington workings [Experience]"?
5. Has the ticket reservoir resilience, wisdom, and vigor to
address the present and future f our beloved "Great-grand
Nation"?
6. Has the ticket enough joint foreign policy experience and
exposure based on " Values, Virtues, Vastness, and " [American
moral soul]"?
7. Has their campaign talk, slogans, ads, plans, and programs based
on facts and are they free of fear, fiction, frivolous labels,
unfair attacks, negativity, and impulsively? [No "imminent danger
to national
security and safety"].
8. Has the ticket genuinely kept on message of country first and
politics last and avoided copying [Message change"]?
9.Has the ticket message stayed away from Culture divide and war[
Disaster prevention ]?
10. Has the ticket resisted being surrounded, supported and
surrogate's by divisiveness, distortion's, and destructive
characters, [ Real patriotism VS shiftiness and shameless
parrot-ism]?
11. Has the ticket thoughtful, real non-partisan, &
non-impulsive plans to address our current economic crisis or
political tactics and temperamental statements.
I have personally and professionally concluded that OBAMA-BIDEN
ticket will lift and inspire our greatgrand nation back to its
greatness within and restore our global standing with the use of
maximum, firm
international diplomacy and minimal force if and when indicated {"
Peace thru Strenght "}.
12. The era of responsibility has to replace irresponsibility and
unaccountability will change to accountability and transparency.
The Wall Street greed will change to Main Street need.
13. Temperamental and Angry McCain is out to play and create a card
mistrust and distress around Obama with the Vail of claim that he
will bring bipartisanship in Washington DC. He is destroying him
claim every by painting Obama naive. It is tragic, sad, and
unfortunate that so called Maverick McCain has already generated a
disdain and demeaning face off in the debates and bailout
suggestion. Obama is real Presidential and he maintained a smile
during the debate and while McCain had a constant grin and disdain
towards Obama.

The questions is whether CBS
let's this stuff out before the debate or sometime after,
because they're going to get out sooner or later.
It may have been a turning point for Couric, who was persistent
without being overbearing, in shedding early doubts about her
ability to be a commanding presence in the CBS anchor chair.
And the worst may be yet to come for Palin; sources say CBS
has two more responses on tape that will likely prove
embarrassing.

carried the Repubs this far is fading, they blew their chance to
win any credit for opposing the bail-out, so just let 'er run, I
say.

Probably the only thing that can bet the Dem ticket at this point
would be a sea change in coverage - away from fawning and

on Chicago to dig through every scrap of Obama's past the way they
did Palin could well bring him down. On-air smirking over Biden's
gaffes the way they do Palin's would suck any vestiges of
credibility from the Dem VP as well.
Oh well. I always say that, if you're standing around after the
game saying "we wuz robbed by the refs", you didn't have a strong
enough team in the first place.

going easy on Obama because they like him, they're going easy on
him (to the extent that they are) because they expelled all their
fresh ammo on him during the primaries. Nobody cares about what
they have anymore, just like nobody cares about the Keating 5
because it's already been through the news cycle. And there isn't
anything left to use. If McCain were smart, he'd have chosen
somebody who was the Republican equivalent of Biden, who could help
while having had the benefit of his dirty laundry being aired out
long ago. Or, at least have already known about all the points the
press is coming at her with. The fact that they didn't, and that
they're now trying to blame the media for their own poor planning,
is pathetic.

I'll admit that I thought it was a pretty gutsy choice that might
have worked.
I am still of two minds. One is like Kristol's and says she is
being excessive handled and that if she would relax, stop trying so
hard to give the 'right' answer, and just be herself, she would
come across a lot better and not so much of a lightweight ditz. But
the other (which I'm increasing leaning toward as the correct one)
is that seeing that she can be so easily pushed around is itself
prima facie evidence that she is, in fact, a lightweight ditz.

McCain would have lost the base with anyone else.VPs traditionally have no significant impact on the final vote so there is no real downside in chosing her.Her upside potential is still there as it is still a ways to the election. As long as partisan Dems call on her to be removed from the ticket you know she is still a threat.

I'll echo the right wing pundits who think she has been
seriously mishandled. The correct way to have used her was an
initial rollout in friendly (partisan) outlets and small town swing
state media markets where she would be covered as a feature story
as much as a political one.
I don't see any danger in letting her roll on her own.Answer
anything, just preface it as her own opinion rather than McCains
when she is unsure.She probably had good general foreign policy
answers before she was picked.
Any specifics could be met with references to having a lot to learn
before January 20th and an enthusiasm for the study.

I'd discount anything coming out of North Carolina right now. There
is a serious motor fuel shortage going on (National news isn't
showing how bad it is ) and one of the biggest "local" banks just
went under.Economic turmoil will likely smooth out a bit before the
election.
If it doesn't McCain is toast unless something bigger over shadows
it.

I think he has Virginia damn near wrapped up. I'm shocked, but he
has managed to do it. 28,000 people coming to see him in the rain
in Fredericksburg (and Fredericksburg is not some leftist suburb of
Washington, its a solidly Republican exurb).
He campaigned in Chester and go thousands out, another thing I've
never seen before. Even state level Democrats hardly set foot in
Chester.

journalism."
Still, like I said, if you have to complain about the refs, its not
like you had a lock on the game anyway.
I have a sneaking suspicion, though, that the Barack Obama

They've dug into it plenty, they just haven't been able to find a
smoking gun. But I guess you probably think the media never really
looked into Whitewater either, the most over-exposed non-scandal

whether the Clintons did anything wrong in the Whitewater case, I
just mean that hundreds of people looked into every detail of it
for years and were unable to dig up anything that tarred the
Clintons electorally.)

I can get gas but you have to find an open station with gas (less
than %10 of them), line up,wait, maneuver the chaos at the pumps,
and hope they don't run out before you pump it.Only regular
available so I have to buy a bottle of octane booster.Not as much
trouble for me as I'm usually out of town in a rental or company
vehicle. Unless you are running out of gas the main impact is
psychological (Is this what it will be like now? or worse?).
America is perceived as a land of abundance, higher prices are
nothing compared to shortages (price is just under $4, I could
stand that or worse indefinitely).

The gas shortage is the fault of the federal government and
those damn boutique fuel requirements as much as any disruptions at
the gulf refineries.Almost nobody understands this.
We used to have the cheapest price in the region before the fuel
mandates thanks to low taxes, pipeline proximity and local
competition.
If not for the boutique fuel mandate the tank farms would have been
full.

Re: the NC gas shortage. It has been bad here. My wife had to
get to work this weekend so I wound up siphoning gas out of my
truck, old CJ5, and lawnmower so she could get there and back.

Would he have lost the base with Huckabee? Saying that he picked
her to shore up the base ignores her most obvious requirement, her
vagina. Someone with the exact same background and qualifications
as Palin, but who had a penis, would not have been selected. She
would not have been selected if Obama had chosen Hillary as his
running mate.
I'm less sold on the idea that she *had* to be attractive, but it
didn't hurt. I don't know, maybe there's some big anti-Huckabee
sentiment out there among social conservatives, but I'm under the
impression there isn't. Maybe he made anti-McCain statements during
the primaries, but that's easily written off, and if that was a
concern, then the McCain campaign is truly staffed by idiots.
But to go all in, the choice had to be (in this order):
1) A woman
2) A social conservative who could rally the base
3) Someone who's been in a campaign and won a large enough election
(like a governorship) to have at least a minimal amount of
electoral credibility.
It's pretty clear, to me at least, that they found someone who fit
those criteria, and prayed she could be a functional running mate
until November. Her scandal back in Alaska (whether you think
there's anything there or not, it's forced them to waste
resources), her complete ignorance of national issues (which may be
fine for a governor of a small, very wealthy state), and inability
to even recite talking points well without a script in front of her
have basically overshadowed everything they thought she had going
for her.

Oh, spare me. There are huge gaps in his self-controlled
biography, most glaringly around his relationship with such highly
questionable Chicago notables as Mr. Rezko, Bill Ayers, and
Bernadine Dohrn, that the big media has simply refused to dig
into.
And, as someone noted above, the press spent months digging for
hard evidence and found nothing. So, they could either do as you're
advocating and run constant hearsay, or they could move on to other
things. Palin's troubles, on the other hand, yield plenty of
evidence when the media digs in even a little bit, making them much
more newsworthy than Obama's questionable past. At least for a
reputable news source.
