David Weigel | August 25, 2008
DENVER - I haven't seen any yet, but the big story of DNC 2008: Hey, This Time Let's Try Not to Lose thus far is the presence of stubborn Hillary Clinton supporters who refuse to call it a day. Last night a friend from the RNC (here in town at a mafia compound—seriously, you have to enter though a terrifying black gate) excitedly told me to look out for Debra Bartoshevich, a Wisconsin Hillary Clinton delegate who blabbed to the 4th Estate about her plan to vote for McCain at the convention. She got her status taken away. So now she's here, talking to press again and starring in a Denver-only TV ad.
That's the GOP message for the week, with the goal of snuffing out Obama's chance to relaunch his image and take the hammer and tongs to McCain. It's aided by a CNN poll (the only one of three new polls that shows Obama not gaining) that shows a dip in Obama's support from Clinton voters.
How does the Obama campaign dig out of this? Gee, I don't know. Everything else about the convention is so dull, and Clinton allies are so eager to throw daggers at Obama (anonymously, of course), that I expect it to stay the buzz of the convention until Wednesday night, at least. The reporter-to-protester ratio at a planned rally of "hundreds" of Hillary dead-enders is going to be huge. Yes, they're a fraction of the number that will be cheering Ron Paul in Minneapolis, but no one knows who they're voting for. The Clinton dead-enders are clearly gettable for McCain: Their gripe is not about idealogy, but emotional pique.
(Side note: I have yet to meet a Republican who was actually worried about facing an Obama/Clinton ticket. Biden's seen as the strongest possible pick, with none of Clinton's negatives and no way to paint Obama as an easily bossed-around ninny who represents "change" like Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper represents "not inducing vomiting." So they're milking the Clinton stuff while they can.)
UPDATE: From the RNC:
Barack Obama's decision to "pass over" Hillary Clinton for his vice-presidential selection without even a vetting or a phone call has served to only exacerbate tensions with the Democrat Party. Obama aides accusing Clinton supporters of acting like "Japanese soldiers in the South Pacific still fighting after the war is over" shouldn't help the situation too much. [Ed-I think they were only referring to the Clintonites who are trying to defeat them.]
...
At night, we will hold a "Happy Hour for Hillary" for all the Democrat delegates, especially supporters of Senator Hillary Clinton.
In an appeal to wavering Democrats they should probably say "Democratic" delegates. Just saying.

Isn't that Mordor?
the presence of stubborn Hillary Clinton supporters who
refuse to call it a day
They went Full Retard. You never go Full Retard.
I repeatedly predicted back in the spring the surfacing of
something so damaging to Obama that Clinton would become the
nominee.
I was wrong.
Yes Epi, even I go full tardo at times. My apologies.
Good a time as any to say it:
I thought the Clintons would find somebody to say "Obama sold me
cocaine" .
I was wrong.
If intentional, it was very clever to stymie oppo-research by
overstating youthful drug experimentation in his autobiography.
"I was wrong."
Dude, don't you know the first thing about Internet discourse?
Never use the w-word in reference to yourself. You'll never get a
job as a cable-news commenter.
"Isn't that Mordor?"
Does Hillary play the role of Shelob in this scenario?
Then Convention is not over. I just saw on CNN where the Dems agreed to let the Michigan and Florida delegates vote. I know it is crazy, but it wouldn't shock me if the Clintons still don't have one trick left. If nothing else, she has already slipped the video of Obama smoking crack with Bill Ayers to Republican operatives.
John I don't think Hillary is the one that wants to see Obama lose, Bill is.
I.e., he got Mark Penn--the guy behind the "Obama isn't a true American strategy"--to write his speech for Wednesday. I expect we might see damning with faint praise.
In an appeal to wavering Democrats they should probably say
"Democratic" delegates.
Old people, like Hillary voters, have long used the adjectival
forms interchangeably. (See any political writing that predates the
"netroots" for examples.) The "-ic" crusade is a recent phenomenon,
confined to young partisans like you.
I love how in Weigal world Clinton supporters who don't support Obama are deadenders. But Republicans who don't go for McCain are couragous hereos. Weigal was really born in the wrong place and in the wrong time. In another time and place, he would have been a great writer for Pravda under Stalin. Not to worry Dave, there is always the North Korean News Service.
I hit on this trick for understanding Hillary Clinton in this
race last winter.
When trying to figure out what she's doing and why she's doing it,
try to picture her not as teh Hildebeast with the dark powers,
spinning wheels within wheels within wheels, but as an ordinary
candidate, whose actions can be understand more or less like any
other politicians' actions.
I know, it goes against everything we've come to believe, but it's
actually proven to be a pretty sound system.
John I don't think Hillary is the one that wants to see
Obama lose, Bill is.
That's because if there are any shenanigans from the Clintons and
Obama loses the election, Hillary's name becomes mud in the party
forever. Hillary doesn't want that to happen, Bill doesn't want her
to outperform him.
Old people, like Hillary voters, have long used the
adjectival forms interchangeably. (See any political writing that
predates the "netroots" for examples.) The "-ic" crusade is a
recent phenomenon, confined to young partisans like
you.'
Actually (as in, in the real world), the party has always been
called "The Democratic Party." The only "crusade" was an effort
that began with Joe McCarthy to mispronounce the name, for whatever
reason. It was only when Newt Gingrich put out his style book in
the 1990s that it became de riguer among Repblicans to mispronounce
the name.
I once say Michelle Malkin "correct" another pundit who said the
proper name.
But, joe, most "ordinary" candidates don't have a direct line to the Dark Lord of the Underworld.
Joe, a bit of trivia here, but Andrew Jackson's opponents in the
1830s also said "Democrat Party" with emphasis on "RAT".
But McCarthy and Nixon gave us the modern incarnation.
I'll see John's Stalin, and raise you Hitler.
Dave, by writing this post, you are just like Hitler.
Call.
Wow, John, I never saw where Weigel called Paul supporters
"courageous heroes". He noted that though there are more
Paul-supporting, anti-McCain protesters in the Twin Cities than
there are PUMAs*, but there's a zillion time more coverage of the
latter than there is of the former.
* I like the PUMA designation because it brings to mind
unattractive cougars.
Why would a writer at a libertarian magazine be more favorable
to Ron Paul supporters than Hillary Clinton supporters?
Man. That's a tough one. Help me out here.
Is it just me or has every cable news network turned into concern trolls made flesh?
@ John:
Hillary and Obama were virtually the same on the issues.
Paul and McCain have less in common than Paine and Machiavelli.
I love how in Weigal world Clinton supporters who don't support Obama are deadenders. But Republicans who don't go for McCain are couragous hereos.
Point understood despite hyperbole. However, here is why I think
Weigel is right and you are wrong.
The reason Hillary supporters are dead-enders is because Hillary
doesn't offer a substantially different platform from Obama, so
they are sacrificing substance for personality or something. Also,
Obama is smooth and Hillary is fingernails on a blackboard. If all
other things are equal, how can you not make fun of the losers who
prefer fingernails on a blackboard.
With McCain and Paul it's exactly the opposite situation. Neither
one is particularly smooth, but their platforms are worlds
apart.
Paul and McCain have less in common than Paine and
Machiavelli.
Somebody has never actually read Machiavelli. Beyond a fairly
shallow reading of "The Prince," anyway. Machiavelli was actually
one of the earliest supporters of a Republic with checks and
balances and a tripartite structure. So, Paine and Machiavelli
would actually have gotten on famously.

and an Injunction that Obama does not meet the qualifications to be
President of the United States. Berg filed this suit for the best
interests of the Democratic Party and the citizens of the United
States."Eighteen million Democratic Primary voters donated money,
volunteered their time and energy, worked very hard and then not
only supported Senator Clinton, but voted for her and often
recruited other supporters as well. All the efforts of supporters

Philip J. Berg, Esquire stated in his lawsuit that Senator
Obama:
1. Is not a natural-born citizen; and/or
2. Lost his citizenship when he was adopted in Indonesia;
and/or
3. Has dual loyalties because of his citizenship with Kenya and
Indonesia.
Berg stated: "I filed this action at this time to avoid the obvious
problems that will occur when the Republican Party raises these
issues after Obama is nominated.
There have been numerous questions raised about Obama's background
with no satisfactory answers. The questions that I have addressed
include, but are not limited to:
1. Where was Obama born? Hawaii; an island off of Hawaii; Kenya;
Canada; or ?
2. Was he a citizen of Kenya, Indonesia and/or Canada?
3. What was the early childhood of Obama in Hawaii; in Kenya; in
Indonesia when he was adopted; and later, back to Hawaii?
4. An explanation as to the various names utilized by Obama that
include: Barack Hussein Obama; Barry Soetoro; Barry Obama; Barack
Dunham; and Barry Dunham.
5. Illinois Bar Application - Obama fails to acknowledge use of
names other than Barack Hussein Obama, a blatant lie.
If Obama can prove U.S. citizenship, we still have the issue of
muti-citizenship with responsibilities owed to and allegance to
other countries.
Berg continued:
fraudulent candidacy and cheated legitimately eligible natural born
citizens from competing in a fair process and the supporters of
their citizen choice for the nomination.
Voters donated money, goods and services to elect a nominee and
were defrauded by Senator Obama's lies and obfuscations. He clearly
shows a conscience of guilt by his actions in using the forged
birth certificate and the lies he's told to cover his loss of
citizenship. We believe he does know, supported this belief by his
actions in hiding his
secret, in that he failed to regain his citizenship and used
documents to further his position as a natural born citizen. We
would also show he proclaims himself a Constitutional scholar and
lecturer, but did not learn he had no eligibility to become
President except by means of lying, obfuscations and deceptions.
His very acts proves he knew he was no longer a natural born
citizen. We believe he knew he was defrauding the country or else
why use the forged birth certificate of his half sister?
Americans lost money, goods and services donated in their support
of a candidate who supposedly was a natural born citizen simply
because the DNC officers and party leaders looked the other way and
did not demand credentials to answer the questions and prove
whether or not Senator Obama was a legitimately natural born
citizen, even in light of recent information that has surfaced on
websites on the Internet suggesting Senator Obama may not be
eligible to become President and questioning his status of multiple
citizenships and questionable loyalties! If the DNC officers and.or
leaders had performed one ounce of due diligence we would not find
ourselves in this emergency predicament, one week away from making
a person the nominee who has lost their citizenship as a child and
failed to even perform the basic steps of regaining citizenship
through an oath of allegiance at age eighteen [18] as prescribed by
Constitutional laws!
The injunctrive relief must be granted because failing to do so,
this inaction defrauds everyone who voted in the Democratic Primary
for a nominee that is a fair representation of the voters. Failure
to grant injunctive relief would allow a corrupted, fraudulent
nomination process to continue. It not only allows, but promotes an
overwhelming degree of disrespect and creates such a lack of
confidence in voters of the primary process itself, so that it
would cement a prevailing belief that no potential candidate has to
obey the laws of this country, respect our election process, follow
the Constitution, or even suffer any consequence for lying and
defrauding voters to get onto the ballot when they have no chance
of serving if they fraudulently manage to get elected! It is unfair
to the country for candidates of either party to become the nominee
when there is any question of their ability to serve if
elected.
All judges are lawyers and held to a higher standard of practice
than a regular lawyer. It is this Judicial standard that demands
injunctive relief prayed for here. This relief is predicated upon
one of the most basic premises of practicing law which states no
lawyer can allow themselves to be used in furthering a criminal
enterprise. And by that gauge alone, failing to give injunctive
relief to the 18 million supporters of the other candidate, a true
natural born citizen eligible to serve if elected, this court must
not allow itself to be used to further the criminal and fraudulent
acts to continue and be rewarded by becoming the Democratic
Nominee. Failure to give the injunctive relief prayed for will
insure that a corrupted Presidential election process will only
guarantee a show of unfair preference of one group of people over
another group by not demanding the same rules be applied to all
groups equally and fairly, especially in light of the fact that
both candidates are each considered a minority.

"Is it really a good idea to give Michelle Obama a prime time
speech?"
I'm hoping she'll advocate the violent overthrow of western
civilization.
Hey, don't we all advocate that?
Where was Obama born? Hawaii; an island off of Hawaii;
Kenya; Canada; or ?
'an island off of Hawaii'. That cracks me up every single time I
read it.
Fun fact: I can see this
island from my backyard.
Is it really a good idea to give Michelle Obama a prime time

Yes. Yes it is.
They went Full Retard. You never go Full Retard.

Maybe she will finally give the "whitey" speech! Encore!
Encore!

Nah, she's still a Bene Gesserit.

hey. Leave cherry vanilla dr. pepper the fuck alone. I like cherry vanilla dr. pepper in small doses even it it is "too much flavor".
I love how in Weigal world Clinton supporters who don't
support Obama are deadenders. But Republicans who don't go for
McCain are couragous [sic] hereos [sic].
Um, Clinton and Obama are virtually identical policy-wise, but
McCain and the GOP are not. Of course, were you to see this obvious
point, you wouldn't have been able to go on to compare someone to
an apologist for totalitarianism, so I suppose you made the right
call.
And they should bring back Hereos. They were better than Oreos. I
really liked the slogan, "They're Here! Eat 'Em!"
RE: "I thought the Clintons would find somebody to say "Obama
sold me cocaine" ."
They did find someone to say that he bought crack and got high with
Obama. The press ignored him, and then the guy totally disappears.
Hmmmm...
It is far easier to sell people a lie than a truth they do not want
to hear.
The funny thing is with this war between Obama and Clinton supporters is that Clinton supporters have nothing to lose. You would think they would have more brains than to try to alienate Clinton supporters further. I think that if the Obama su[pporters just give it a rest the Clinton supporters will come around. If the war keeps going Obama has a very good chance of losing in November. Personally I think Obama should have been smart and made Clinton his VP but I think his bitter advisers did not give him very good advice. Shame.
Apparently, Bill Clinton isn't even going to mention Obama's name in his speech.
I love how in Weigal world Clinton supporters who don't

Dave, there is always the North Korean News Service.
srsly. think. then has a post and your posts is will has cents.
Clearly, Hillary's supporters think there is a difference
between the two. Of course, Obama just picked for his VP a guy who
voted for the invasion of Iraq, the Patriot Act, and the FISA
renewal and supported the surge. Yet, Obama's decision not to
support the war was the most important decision of this generation
and the strongest evidence of his better judgement over McCain.
Honestly, I don't think ideology is that important to Democrats
right now. It is about personality and power.
As far as the Republican deadenders in the Paul camp, by voting for
Barr they will help ensure that the Democrats get the Presidency
and a filabuster proof majority in the Senate. That is a real
possibility. But once we have socialized medicine and European
level tax rates, they really will be able to score points then.
Tharms,
That's why I haven't gone forward with my testimony about how Obama
was a coke mule. I'll disappear! Then again I could also end up
committing "suicide" a la Vince Foster.

Is John McCain going to
trot out big name ethnic entertainer endorsements all during
the DemocRAT Party convention week?
I'm not sure how that works with the anti-celebrity meme McCain has been using, SIV.
@ John:
do you really have that much faith in obama and the dems to
actually accomplish something that substantial (like
universal healthcare or massive tax hikes) while in office? you
clearly know nothing about bureaucracy.
Clearly, Hillary's supporters think there is a difference
between the two.
The big two that Clinton has are a vagina and white skin.
In another time and place, he would have been a great writer
for Pravda under Stalin.
See, Dave. You're really no different than a man who had over 20
million people murdered.
That's how it is in John's world.
Is John McCain going to trot out big name ethnic entertainer
endorsements all during the DemocRAT Party convention
week?
Daddy Yankee's endorsement is huge.
Daddy Yankee is even bigger than the Decembrists. And we all know
they are the ones who drew 70,000 to that Obama speech in
Portland.
Clearly, Hillary's supporters think there is a difference
between the two
Yes, he isn't she. That's all they have left. It's odd: they
support Hillary, but not what she stands for. Of course, they might
believe that Hillary doesn't stand for what Hillary stands
for--which is I suppose a possibility.
What the Hillary supporters do when she officially tells them at
the convention to support Obama will tell us something about the
nature of their support for her. If these "deadenders" are a cult
of personality, then it will be a "Fine! I am the
Messiah!" situation a la Life of Brian, and Obama will not
get their support.
John,
What's your deal with Weigel? Do you need the doll courtrooms use
to show the jury where he touched you?
There's only one reason I could think that any Dem delegate
would vote for McCain. They're making the colossal gamble that if
Obama loses, Hillary can run in 2012. If Obama wins the election,
his administration is in a strong position to remain in office for
the next eight years, if not twelve-- barring any major scandals or
total and complete blundering. Hillary's an impatient woman. Or so
I hear.
In the end, I really think that this is a gamble that no Dem voter
is willing to make.

Hillary Clinton clearly would have strengthened the Democrat ticket. Biden is a net zero, neither adding or subtracting. Obama must believe that he can win without Hillary (or Michelle nixed the deal). Pride goeth before a fall.
Sure Charles, whatever you say. Just ignore the fact that Biden is hugely popular in Pennsylvania, especially parts where Obama didn't do very well in the Primary. Plus, he's an excellent attack dog, which is exactly what a VP candidate should be, and what Obama needs. Hillary would have shut up a few of the nutjobs who claim they'll vote for McCain over Obama because she's not on the ticket, but they're few and far between. Plus, with Biden's support of women's issues (Violence Against Women Act), he'll bring the Hillary supporters who have maintained the capacity to think rationally.
Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. proverbs 16:18
Hillary Clinton clearly would have strengthened the Democrat
ticket.
I think that's a matter of opinion, often expressed by die-hard
Hillary supporters. In the rest of America, however...
Violence Against Women Act),
Oh crap, Biden supported this constitutional abortion? So he's
never read it, either. Great.
Hillary Clinton clearly would have strengthened the Democrat
ticket. Biden is a net zero, neither adding or subtracting. Obama
must believe that he can win without Hillary (or Michelle nixed the
deal). Pride goeth before a fall.
The VP slot is about avoiding alienating the electorate. Hillary
Clinton, negatives, lot's of them. Biden, much less so. She'd sink
the ticket.
Plus Obama lied in the debate. He really doesn't find her "likable
enough". But then, who does?
Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before
a fall.
And I goeth before my boss if I screw up those TPS reports...
J sub, maybe he wasn't lying. Maybe he'd had a couple cocktails to relax before the debate and in that slightly drunk horndog state of mind, he really did find her "likable enough."
Biden is virtually unknown here in Pennsylvania. The idea that
he is hugely popular here is a media creation.
I am far from a Hillary supporter, but rather a Republican who is
thankful that we dodged a bullet when Obama ignored Hillary.
Obama is in serious trouble in Pennsylvania, despite the polls, for
the simple reason that he is "black." Just ask Lynn Swann. And much
of the anti-black vote is blue-collar, union Democrats, not those
nasty Republicans.
Just remember that Bush narrowly lost Pennsylvania against stronger
candidates than Obama, and that no Democrat has been elected
President withou winning Pennsylvania since Harry Truman.
Pennsylvania will be the "Florida" of this election, and will not
be decided until early morning when the western PA vote is
counted.
Plus, with Biden's support of women's issues (Violence
Against Women Act)
Another reason to vote against Obama!
If Biden is the strongest possible pick, then the democrats are
suffering from a severe dearth of talent.
-jcr
Is this the Dem Convention for Hillary or Bill?I am so sick of them. You know what, it's time to move on, and I don't really believe there are that many Hillary supporters who are not voting for Obama, as the media portrays. Unless Hillary owns these people and they don't have minds of their own, she can keep um.
to BDB:
Ed Rendell won on his personality. Many voters are likely unaware
of his religion, which in any event is not as prejudicial as
race.
The Democrat strength in PA is mostly located in Philadelphia and
its suburbs. Western PA will support some moderate union-type
Democrats, but not Obama. Just go to any working-class bar or fire
hall social club and see how many blacks are present. Oh, wait,
fire company social halls are private clubs created to exclude
blacks (and populated by working-class democrats, not those racist
Republicans).
Check the results from the Pennsylvania Democrat primary, and see
how few votes Obama received outside the Philadelphia ghetto.
As described by James Carville, "Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and
Pittsburgh, with Alabama in between".
I find it absolutely amazing that Democrats are so negative about Bill Clinton, the only Democrat elected President in the last 40 years (except for the aberration of one-term Jimmy Peanut). Obama will join McGovern, Mondale, Dukakis, Algore, and the Windsurfer in the hall of left-wing losers. Clinton knew that victory was in the center, which McCain has grabbed this time by virtue of a vacuum created by the hard left.
Paul,
Often, when you read commentary about Hillary Clinton, there is an
absurd level of the black helicopter paranoia. People come up with
these implausible scenarios to explain why whatever happened is
part of the Clinton Master Plan.
There's just been so much of this nonsense surrounding both of them
for so long in, and dutifully passed on the "liberal" media, that
its become difficult to see her and not the fevered imaginings
about her.
Why should we bow down to Obama?
Hillary was treated with no respect during her campaign, Borack was
the top person doing it! Although he tried to act like he
wasn't.
I do not know why Hillary chooses to support this fake, but, I
believe in free thinking and will not vote for him because someone
tells me too.
He is in my opinion wrong for this country, He lacks basic
intelligence and experience.
So I remain committed to Hillary Clinton, She will make a great
President in 4 years, I will be waiting to vote for her!
Larry King said last night rather angrily, "I don't like people who won't vote for a man just because of his race." Someone on the show practically said that's the American way. It's talk like that has gotten us where we are today in America. In the dumpster. You reap what you sow. You sow racism you reap destruction.
So, "Redphilly", if Obama loses will it be because America is a
racist country. Will you riot and loot liquor stores and TV
stores?
Only you and Michelle Obama believe that America is "in the
dumpster." But if you live in Philly, you may get that impression,
because Philly is one big dumpster.
All people who are not voting for Obama are not racists!
I am not voting for him because he is not smart enough to do the
job!
We need someone with experience, compassion and tenacity and who
commands respect like Hillary.
Obama has lied and been caught so many times, I have never trusted
him and as time goes on, more people are on to him. Read the post
above about a lawsuit filed against Obama. Speaks volumes.
Cheryl:
Don't be intimidated. You are not alone. I know several women at
work, all lifetime Democrats, who are considering voting for
McCain.
My wife, a lifelong Republican, was so disturbed by the gender bias
and shabby treatment of hillary during the primaries that she was
actively rooting for Hillary, something that I never would have
believed.
What I have learned from this campaign is that it is OK to be
openly biased on gender and age, but that even the slightest hint
of criticism of Obama is labeled racist.
Charles, your team red martyr approach is really just
beautiful.
"Will you riot and loot liquor stores and TV stores?"
Uh, okaaay ...
Objectarian:
I refuse to accept the media color-coding. It is the Democrat party
who are "Reds."
As for rioting in the face of a loss (or even victory), considering
history and the Obama base, rioting is likely.
"At night, we will hold a "Happy Hour for Hillary" for all the
Democrat delegates, especially supporters of Senator Hillary
Clinton"
"GOP To Get Hillary Fans Drunk, Take Advantage"
Who was it who said bipartisan is just another word for date
rape?
Jesus, you mccain supporters and pumas are pathetic. obama and
hillary are basically one and the same. black or female, take your
pick.
it was never the obama camp saying anything sexist, it was the
media insinuating racism and/or sexism at every turn.
fuck you all - it doesnt matter if obama or mccain win, either way,
the american public loses.
I have gone through the above article its great. Here we collect
lot of information on the running politics. We can aware on them
also.According to me Obama will be the right person.
