David Weigel | March 9, 2007
Big up to Metafilter user "zabuni," who's created the H&R filter so many people have been begging for since the dark days of late March 2006.

Hmmm...too bad he'll never know it was announced.
I like the ubiquitous "beta" label, but where's the badge and the
gradient? Silly Yahoo!
Too funny. Ha!
He'll never know it was announced. Ha! Ha!
Why filter something out instead of simply choosing not to read
it?
Mr. Weigel, you're all right.
I'm having a hard time seeing where the anti-Weigel thing comes from. Is it just the Republicans who think that the libertarian vote is their party's birthright? Is it just the people who think that any coverage of Democrats that doesn't draw them as Stalins in disguise is commie fellatio?
I am more inclined to read articles by Mr. Weigel because he
frequently approaches issues in a way that I would not.
So I come away having either learned somthing new, or having had my
previous outlook confirmed.
Congratulations, Hr. Weigel!
Yoo da man! :)
"Is it just the people who think that any coverage of Democrats
that doesn't draw them as Stalins in disguise is commie
fellatio?"
bingo.
I, for one, enjoy reading Weigel's writing. I really can't name
a Reason writer who I don't enjoy reading. I guess, if I was a
hardcore right winger, I might take issue with some of hist
articles. I try to keep an open mind though, and actually read that
which would challenge my beliefs.
Nick
I have no idea where some people get the idea that Weigel is a
shill for anybody. It's like accusing Bill James of being biased
toward the Yankees because he writes about stats and what's
successful. He's not rooting for the Yankees, he's telling you what
they do to win.
Clumsy metaphor.
"I'm having a hard time seeing where the anti-Weigel thing

libertarian vote is their party's birthright? Is it just the people
who think that any coverage of Democrats that doesn't draw them as
Stalins in disguise is commie fellatio?"
I don't know where that comes from. I like the coverage of my
politics...er...politicians, actually, to be completely
correct.
I also like the sound of two bricks being bashed together.
If Weigel is filtered, how will I know when to cancel my subscription to the print mag and boycott the Elliot Wave advertiser?
Rimfax-
I'm having a hard time seeing where the anti-Weigel thing comes
from.
Look at his blogroll.
I see Kos, Klein, Yglesias, Ackerman, and the truly idiotic Roy
Edroso.
I admit that he does have Jim Geraghty and Andi representing the
"right"-- but if his 'politics' are revealed by his blogroll, he's
a leftist shitbucket who sometimes skews libertarian.
I admit that he does have Jim Geraghty and Andi representing
the "right"
Who's going to break it to Jeremy Lott, Michael Brendan Dougherty,
Steve Sailer and Will Wilkinson that they've been assimilated into
the left-wing Borg?
I'm having a hard time seeing where the anti-Weigel
thing comes from.

Edroso.
Anyone who singles out the writing of Mr. Edroso as "truly idiotic"
has just affirmed Rimfax's rhetorical question. Give me a fucking
break. This Weigel-hatred is merely spawned by Republican
teamsterism, not any concerns about liberty or truth.
Look at his blogroll.
I see Kos, Klein, Yglesias, Ackerman, and the truly idiotic Roy
Edroso.
Also
Michael Brendan Dougherty (Assistant Editor at The American
Conservative), Andrew Sullivan, and Steve Sailer.
What's that prove?
I'd add that there's something... What's the word I'm looking
for?
I'd use "effeminate", but that would be demeaning to women. It's
more like "childish" + "petty" anyway. ...Yeah, the word I'm
thinking of has all that, but there's a dash of psychotic in there
too.
Anyway, whatever "that word" is, going about trying to sanitize the
world of whatever offends your eye, trying to render the world
clean of whatever you don't want to see--even when it's right in
front of you... There's something childish, petty and psychotic
about that.
...and I suspect the anti-social types who suffer so could probably
do with some counseling.
I'm not a raving fan, Weigel. ...but here's to ya!
Thats funny, I always thought of Weigel as a "young republican"
type who managed to pull his head out of his ass.
If anything, I always thought Julian was the most pro-dem leaning
on H&R.
I'm not saying theres anything wrong with that by the way,
republicans can suck my balls.
It mostly comes from when he took over on Spin City. See, some
rightwingers still associate Michael J. Fox with Alex P. Keaton.
Also, not a few libertarians know that Fox comes down on the right
side of stem cell research, and thus, his replacement is watched by
both these camps to see if he deviates at all from the standard he
set.
He also killed Tom Berenger in Platoon, who was also in
Sniper, and as you know, libertarians and right wingers
dig guns.
Plus, Major League 2 was a major league letdown!
Plus, I mean come on, his Dad was the most absurdly liberal
President since Johnson.
(I think I have mined the Charlie Sheen seam of humor sufficiently.
Don't you?)
I have to admit, Men at Work sucked, but isn't this
rediculous?
His brother directed that. Blame Emilio.
"to see if he deviates at all from the standard he set."
Should to see if he deviates at all from the standard McFly
set.
"Anyway, whatever "that word" is, going about trying to
sanitize the world of whatever offends your eye, trying to render
the world clean of whatever you don't want to see--even when it's
right in front of you... There's something childish, petty and
psychotic about that."
We sometimes kick around and make fun of the self-appointed around
here who they get to decide who is and who isn't a real
libertarian...
...but seriously, if you want to read a censored copy of Reason or
Hit & Run, then you aren't a real libertarian!
P.S. No, there's nothing psychotic about quoting yourself.
I don't think it's productive to get all judgmental. Weigel hatred mostly comes from douchebags who don't realize that Weigel fucking rocks. That's not bad. It's just different.
My disagreements with Weigel are a bit different. I think there
is a tendency in his writing to take complex issues and reduce them
to false simplicity in the name of pithiness. Not just the war. Not
just Democrats.
That said, advertising a filter for yourself is just great. I'd
never bother, but more than that I don't agree with it in
principle.
Yeah, Henley is a shill for Big Weigel.
Anyways, why hasn't anyone posted anything about the DC Circuit's
decision? I don't care if its Friday night.
Helloooooo?!
Any hear anything about a 2nd Amendment decision in the DC Circuit
around here?
Hello?
Anyone?
Nope, nothing but echoes in here....odd.
People who cannot stand to read opinions differeing from their own are beneath contempt.

I agree, debating in a message thread loses all meaning if you're
ignoring half the people on there. Besides, there's a certain part
of my personality that actually enjoys insane posts and ad
hominems. Even bad trolling attempts make me laugh.
Oh, now that is funny! Good show David!
Thank goodness this did not come out 3 days ago or I might have
used it.
So, has Reson stopped caring about DC gun rights? There is a big story about it today.
So, has Reson stopped caring about DC gun rights?
Bonus points for the first "For a magazine named Reson . .
. " post!
(Kidding!)
Weigal is just shilling for zabuni!
It's kind of kind of funny that the person most likely to filter
Dave Weigel's posts will never get it to work.
Since we Republicans know that so-called "David Weigel" is an agent of the Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy, shouldn't we watch him all the more closely rather than filtering him out? If a general publishes his battle plans, the opposing general would have to be a fool to refuse to read them.
Big up to Metafilter user "zabuni," who's created the H&R filter so many people have been begging for since the dark days of late March 2006.
God. How rude is that.
The filter for comments seems more useful.
I forecast that Weigel shilling for the Dems will attain a cult
status sort of like Nick's jacket has.

It's the new corn syrup!
"So, has Reson stopped caring about DC gun rights?"
"DC gun rights" is an oxymoron. You can't care about something that
doesn't exist.
That's sort of the point they're hinting at...

I think the anti-Weigelness comes from the fact that Dave is probably the angriest person to post on H&R. His posts are noticeably different from the others. There's a certain accusatory tone to his posts which augment his usual condemnation of all things right-of-center. I'm in no way defending the Right, but Dave does seem to go out of his way to disparage them.
I've always thought the "shill" accusations to be way off the mark. "Shill" implies that someone is being paid or otherwise compensated for a viewpoint they wouldn't otherwise have. I've never found that to be the case with Weigel. What I have found to be the case is that he frequently posts the kind of petty, insignificant, anti-right snipy kind of items you'd find on kos or drumm, with an even more childish take to them. There are blogs that I visit to get my daily partisan back-and-forth; Reason was one of the ones I visited to escape it. Since Weigel started accounting for 3/4 of Hit&Run's posts, it's become more of the former than the latter.
"What I have found to be the case is that he frequently posts

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner!
David Weigel,
You were brought on to do Wonkette-like snarky political posts
sympathetic to libertarians, right? F'em if they think you have to
choose a side. I don't always care about your posts, but I'm glad
to see them. (and I'll bet you generate the most comments
overall.)
I'll cop to doing that sometimes. I ain't proud.
Sometimes? Didn't you go to college for a long time in two majors
that are big on comma placement and word usage? David, David, David
. . .
I don't always agree with Dave Weigel's blog items but I'll
defend to the death serious injury
point of minor inconvenience extent of the occasional
appreciative nod that seems like it won't get me in any undue
trouble his right to post them.
Weigal was hired because this site is populated mostly by a bunch of Democratic sissies masquerading as libertarians. I'm glad he's here, ribbing him about his slant is half the fun.
Limbaugh had a nice ``Contrary to what you've heard, nobody
cares what you think'' speech to the graduates that might account
for the filter-Weigel movement.
If the schools had their way, of course, the adults would be
getting the complementary opposite speech instead.
James Ard,
We can't use that term any more or we will be labelled homophobic
Ann coulter fans :)
So, as matters stand we now have:
The Walker Jacket,
The Bailey Disclaimer,
The Young Equivocation,
The Sanchez Dissertation Length Blog Entry That Uses Big Words And

Resulting In Utter Incomprehension,
The Doherty Self-Promotion Tour,
And now,
The Weigel Filter!
Congratulations, Mr. Weigel. You are now officially part of Hit
& Run lore.
What, no love for all the many things the comments gallery has
contributed to H&R lore?
-Corn Syrup
-Noam Chomsky blow-up doll (Viking Moose's contribution)
-"Of course, Kerry would be worse!" (John Kerry, not Kerry Howley,
who would certainly be a better leader than John Kerry)
-"I suggest you read [insert pretentious reference here] before you
embarass yourself any further!"
-"Weigal is shilling for the Dems!"
-Secret Designs of the Secret Designers
To name just a few...
I'm still waiting for you to answer my question about [...] from
the last thread!
Why does [...] hate America?
What, no love for all the many things the comments gallery
has contributed to H&R lore?
You refer, I take it, to the "B Team"?
Sen Rick Santorum, dj of raleigh, gaius marius, biggus dickus, Unborn Angel, His Holiness the Puppy Pope Rex Rover II, etc
The "douchebag" in question, here (Dave left comments closed on
his original post, or I would have written there).
I appreciate the gratuitous insults to my motives and/or
intelligence, but I'm not sure why this is an egregious slam at
Dave. I don't enjoy his writing as much as I do other H&R
writers, that's all. If I'm going to read H&R on a feed, it's
easier to pre-screen his posts out.
I hardly think this is an unusual concept-surely everyone here
doesn't read EVERY word of every magazine or blog they frequent?
There were quite a number of people pleased when Marty Peretz moved
off of The Plank for his own blog, for example. I even seem to
remember some sort of hack-was it Greasemonkey?-to screen Xeni
Jardin off of BoingBoing.
If I had asked for a Pipe with ONLY Dave, would that have been
insulting to everyone other contributor to H&R?

The Doherty Self-Promotion Tour,
I'm a big fan of "On the Other Hand, with Cathy", and I know no one
can give the whole list. ...but for the record, I might have
included Cavanaugh Zombie Movie Reviews and the patented Welch Take
Down on the list of all time faves. We're talking about peeves that
turn into faves, right?
I think Weigel's partially a victim of his subject matter too. Some
of us have always looked down our noses at partisans and
personalities (although RC Dean and joe will spend eternity arguing
about whether the Democrats or the Republicans were worse). ...but
Weigel covers partisans and personalities and that seems to draw an
element into the comments section that thinks partisans and
personalities is highbrow.
Anyway, I suspect he may suffer a bit from guilty by association.
...but then again, I did see someone on the scene matching the
description with some matches and a five gallon drum of "______
hater".
I tend to see the Weigel-bashers as primarily aping the Oval Office's formulaic response to any unpleasant or unflattering disclosure: "Well, while we can't actually say this information is not true, we reserve our right to claim that its disclosure is anti-American propaganda which only provides aid and comfort to the terrrists [sic]."
I'm glad David Weigel has kept such a good sense of humor about this. Instead of a filter, what I think would be better would be a rule that for every Weigel post there had to be a Radley Balko post. Something for everyone!
The "douchebag" in question, here ... I appreciate the
gratuitous insults to my motives and/or intelligence, but I'm not
sure why this is an egregious slam at Dave.
Well, whatever your motives, you've been r00ted by a master
tactician. If you use the same filter the man advertised; that
pretty much makes you his bitch.
Weigel may take a lot of crap but nobody asked about his facelift.
Weigel may take a lot of crap but nobody asked about his
facelift.
He had a facelift? I thought he was lying about being only 40.
I'd like a filter that makes it look like I posted every post, and commented to every post as well. Then all my friends would think, "man that guy knows how to live."
(although RC Dean and joe will spend eternity arguing about
whether the Democrats or the Republicans were worse)
And enjoying ourselves every minute!
Rick H. idiotically bleated:
This Weigel-hatred is merely spawned by Republican teamsterism,
not any concerns about liberty or truth.
Bullshit. I think David Wiegel is a "progressive" partisan, and I'm
nowhere near Republican. Let's run down my positions:
Pro defeating political Islam
Anti prohibition (of ALL drugs)
Pro abortion (before 1st trimester)
Anti Christianity
Pro gay rights
Anti marriage rights
Pro capitalism
Anti communism
Pro liberty
Anti forced compassion
So which political party do I fall in? I call myself small-l
libertarian, and I always vote for Libertarians wherever I see
them.
And David Wiegel is still a "progressive" loser who graces the
pages of reason.com much like a cancerous tumor befouls the
luscious cheek of a voluptuous supermodel. Anyone who reads Kos
with anything but bitter contempt deserves said contempt, as Kos is
as partisan and anti-reason (the concept, not the magazine) as they
come. I will be using the new pipe because if I wanted to read what
he had to say, there are dozens of partisan "progressive" blogs to
choose from which repeat their tired hate and stupidity on a daily
basis. I come to reason.com for something different, and David
Wiegel infects it. So long, David Wiegel! You won't be
missed.
Additionally, I find David Wiegel's arguments to be lacking in
substance.

Dave Weigel understands and forgives you, for his heart is as the
heart of a Star Beast.
I don't know how Dave Wiegel will take your imprecations,
though, so be careful out there.
