I'm having a hard time seeing where the anti-Weigel thing comes from. Is it just the Republicans who think that the libertarian vote is their party's birthright? Is it just the people who think that any coverage of Democrats that doesn't draw them as Stalins in disguise is commie fellatio?

I am more inclined to read articles by Mr. Weigel because he
frequently approaches issues in a way that I would not.
So I come away having either learned somthing new, or having had my
previous outlook confirmed.

I, for one, enjoy reading Weigel's writing. I really can't name
a Reason writer who I don't enjoy reading. I guess, if I was a
hardcore right winger, I might take issue with some of hist
articles. I try to keep an open mind though, and actually read that
which would challenge my beliefs.

I have no idea where some people get the idea that Weigel is a
shill for anybody. It's like accusing Bill James of being biased
toward the Yankees because he writes about stats and what's
successful. He's not rooting for the Yankees, he's telling you what
they do to win.

for?
I'd use "effeminate", but that would be demeaning to women. It's
more like "childish" + "petty" anyway. ...Yeah, the word I'm
thinking of has all that, but there's a dash of psychotic in there
too.
Anyway, whatever "that word" is, going about trying to sanitize the
world of whatever offends your eye, trying to render the world
clean of whatever you don't want to see--even when it's right in
front of you... There's something childish, petty and psychotic
about that.
...and I suspect the anti-social types who suffer so could probably
do with some counseling.

Thats funny, I always thought of Weigel as a "young republican"
type who managed to pull his head out of his ass.
If anything, I always thought Julian was the most pro-dem leaning
on H&R.
I'm not saying theres anything wrong with that by the way,

It mostly comes from when he took over on Spin City. See, some
rightwingers still associate Michael J. Fox with Alex P. Keaton.
Also, not a few libertarians know that Fox comes down on the right
side of stem cell research, and thus, his replacement is watched by
both these camps to see if he deviates at all from the standard he
set.
He also killed Tom Berenger in Platoon, who was also in
Sniper, and as you know, libertarians and right wingers
dig guns.
Plus, Major League 2 was a major league letdown!
Plus, I mean come on, his Dad was the most absurdly liberal
President since Johnson.
(I think I have mined the Charlie Sheen seam of humor sufficiently.

My disagreements with Weigel are a bit different. I think there
is a tendency in his writing to take complex issues and reduce them
to false simplicity in the name of pithiness. Not just the war. Not
just Democrats.
That said, advertising a filter for yourself is just great. I'd
never bother, but more than that I don't agree with it in
principle.

I think the anti-Weigelness comes from the fact that Dave is probably the angriest person to post on H&R. His posts are noticeably different from the others. There's a certain accusatory tone to his posts which augment his usual condemnation of all things right-of-center. I'm in no way defending the Right, but Dave does seem to go out of his way to disparage them.

I've always thought the "shill" accusations to be way off the mark. "Shill" implies that someone is being paid or otherwise compensated for a viewpoint they wouldn't otherwise have. I've never found that to be the case with Weigel. What I have found to be the case is that he frequently posts the kind of petty, insignificant, anti-right snipy kind of items you'd find on kos or drumm, with an even more childish take to them. There are blogs that I visit to get my daily partisan back-and-forth; Reason was one of the ones I visited to escape it. Since Weigel started accounting for 3/4 of Hit&Run's posts, it's become more of the former than the latter.

I appreciate the gratuitous insults to my motives and/or
intelligence, but I'm not sure why this is an egregious slam at
Dave. I don't enjoy his writing as much as I do other H&R
writers, that's all. If I'm going to read H&R on a feed, it's
easier to pre-screen his posts out.
I hardly think this is an unusual concept-surely everyone here
doesn't read EVERY word of every magazine or blog they frequent?
There were quite a number of people pleased when Marty Peretz moved
off of The Plank for his own blog, for example. I even seem to
remember some sort of hack-was it Greasemonkey?-to screen Xeni
Jardin off of BoingBoing.
If I had asked for a Pipe with ONLY Dave, would that have been

I'm a big fan of "On the Other Hand, with Cathy", and I know no one
can give the whole list. ...but for the record, I might have
included Cavanaugh Zombie Movie Reviews and the patented Welch Take
Down on the list of all time faves. We're talking about peeves that
turn into faves, right?
I think Weigel's partially a victim of his subject matter too. Some
of us have always looked down our noses at partisans and
personalities (although RC Dean and joe will spend eternity arguing
about whether the Democrats or the Republicans were worse). ...but
Weigel covers partisans and personalities and that seems to draw an
element into the comments section that thinks partisans and
personalities is highbrow.
Anyway, I suspect he may suffer a bit from guilty by association.
...but then again, I did see someone on the scene matching the
description with some matches and a five gallon drum of "______
hater".

Bullshit. I think David Wiegel is a "progressive" partisan, and I'm
nowhere near Republican. Let's run down my positions:
Pro defeating political Islam
Anti prohibition (of ALL drugs)
Pro abortion (before 1st trimester)
Anti Christianity
Pro gay rights
Anti marriage rights
Pro capitalism
Anti communism
Pro liberty
Anti forced compassion
So which political party do I fall in? I call myself small-l
libertarian, and I always vote for Libertarians wherever I see
them.
And David Wiegel is still a "progressive" loser who graces the
pages of reason.com much like a cancerous tumor befouls the
luscious cheek of a voluptuous supermodel. Anyone who reads Kos
with anything but bitter contempt deserves said contempt, as Kos is
as partisan and anti-reason (the concept, not the magazine) as they
come. I will be using the new pipe because if I wanted to read what
he had to say, there are dozens of partisan "progressive" blogs to
choose from which repeat their tired hate and stupidity on a daily
basis. I come to reason.com for something different, and David
Wiegel infects it. So long, David Wiegel! You won't be
missed.
