Drudge reports that Rupert Murdoch is on board to host a Hillary Clinton fundraiser on behalf of News Corp. Yes, the very linchpin of Hillary's old right-wing conspiracy. Yes, politics is politics, and entertainment is entertainment, and business is business, and if you might end up president, people want to be on your side.

Hillary is running for re-election to the Senate right now. And she'll probably win that seat, so Murdoch probably figures he should get free PR in the media capitol of the world.

I doubt this has anything to do with the 2008 election.

I can see how this helps Murdoch; alot of lefties and Democratic officials like Kerry were talking about fighting "media consolidation" and bringing back the fairness doctrine, which was all widely seen as code for "FOX must be destroyed." But I think for Hilary this is a risk; the activist base of her party has been taught to hate Murdoch, so might this not hurt turnout, donations, etc.?

This part, if true, is sad to me. Regular readers will know that I am as anti-consolidation as anybody, but if any deconsolidation could destroy a network as popular as FOX, then it would be a very bad form of deconsolidation indeed. And I pretty much loathe FOX, at least as far as political content goes, but deconsolidation should never lead to ridiculous conclusions vis-a-vis expressed consumer preferences.

This wouldn't really be news. People think of FOX as being pro-Republican or pro-Bush, but that's misleading. What Murdoch is, here, in Europe, in Australia, and soon in China, is pro-Government, whatever that government might be. It really is glaring and it's been commented on by those who have watched Murdoch's networks in more than one region. He stands with whoever is in power, a craven little toady of those that rule.

One day, when the jingoists he has promoted and pandered to finally get their war with China, Murdoch's media empire will be able to claim truthfully that it is, overall, objective, with his US network excoriating the yellow devils and his Chinese network enthusing for the defeat of the Western imperialists. You don't have to watch FOX very long to know that it has made its mark by selling fear, hatred, and violence to anyone and everyone. "Everyone has an enemy" is Murdoch's business model.

If anything, putting Hillary out in the general election is the GOP's best-case scenario for winning the '08 election.
