Good morning reason!

The moral above is: don't be born in Canada.

Untermensch|7.27.10 @ 6:25AM|

Curses, foiled again in my goal to be first. Suki, do you live outside of the United States or are you a vampire?

Suki|7.27.10 @ 7:25AM|

I am in all places and in everything. I am eternal.

Good morning Untermensch :) Everything kosher in your world?

Dilema|7.27.10 @ 2:37PM|

So here is a question for you.

Is it better to be born in Canada and have to struggle to learn the evils of, and then disregard socialism, or,

Is it better to be born in the U.S. and have to struggle to learn the evils of, and then disregard religion?

|7.27.10 @ 4:48PM|

You seem to be operating under the misapprehension that the is no socialism in the United States and that there is no religion in Canada.

The most frequently heard justification for socialism in Canada is the Biblical admonition that you are your brother's keeper.

Dilema|7.28.10 @ 12:33AM|

Nope, not suffer under that misapprehension:

Infact was raised a Christian in Canada, so am well aware of your point.

Just as an overwhelming broad generalization, it appears that the dominant burden put on the young minds of United States Citizens is Religion. They are far more well versed in the evils of Communism, etc. However, it sneaks in, based on the moral premise, as you stated, of "you are your brothers keeper".

In Canada, again, as a broad generalization, religious fundamentalism is less prevalent, due to the acceptance of multi-multiculturalism, and instead, it is these secular teachings of socialism, or left wing "environmentalism" that seem to dominate the general culture.

So basically, Suki's comment had me wondering, what burden would be psychologically, and philosophically easiest to free oneself from.

I thought the readers of reason may have some interesting opinions on this.

Suki|5.16.11 @ 9:10AM|

Thought provoking, quite.

|7.27.10 @ 7:27AM|

It left me on the edge of my seat, wondering: Will Part II ever get around to having a point?

Suki|7.27.10 @ 9:12AM|

What's wrong with you? If they get to the point in Part II nobody will read Part III: I.M.P. Goes to Gaza.

|7.27.10 @ 9:15AM|

Oh boy! And don't forget: Ayn Rand hasn't yet made an appearance. That panel should be chock full of yucks!

Suki|7.27.10 @ 9:32AM|

Get the corkscrew ready for the Virginia Postrel cameo.

Free kosher dills for everyone!

Alan Vanneman|7.27.10 @ 7:43AM|

Forget the "abbreviated" bullshit. We want the real deal! Here's hoping for a ten-parter! I love learning about forgotten libertarian heroines whose lives came to nothing!

|7.27.10 @ 8:04AM|

libertarian heroines

That's hero worship? Seems like standard Reason snark to me.

The Angry Optimist|7.27.10 @ 8:33AM|

Better a ten-parter about Paterson than a disjointed, nonsensical story about Holmes, complete with awkward sex scenes.

Alan Vanneman|7.27.10 @ 10:49AM|

You read the book! No wonder you're angry!

The Angry Optimist|7.27.10 @ 11:28AM|

well-played.

Man of the New Normal|7.27.10 @ 8:27AM|

I thought this strip would somehow incorporate Kerry's yacht, Isabel.

Suki|7.27.10 @ 9:35AM|

That's after Vietnam in "I.M.P goes to RI".

DADIODADDY|7.27.10 @ 4:58PM|

I thoughtit was in "Isabel Paterson and her all girl electric orchestra"

|7.27.10 @ 8:49AM|

We have a Gutzon Borglum sculpture in our lobby. Too early to have been worked on by Paterson, though.

mr simple|7.27.10 @ 9:21AM|

So this woman lived a life and things happened, huh? That's so interesting.

The Angry Optimist|7.27.10 @ 9:28AM|

Not everything that is written is written for you.

Citizen Nothing|7.27.10 @ 9:46AM|

Funny. At my newspaper we seem to write everything for "Mr. Simple."
Then we wonder why the industry is dying.

Mr. Simple|7.27.10 @ 10:00AM|

I didn't get my paper today, dammit!

Les|7.27.10 @ 1:25PM|

Actually, this woman lived a life when women had a fraction of the rights and respect that men did and she prevailed while showing more independence and courage than most of the men of her time and probable even now, a hundred years later. So, it is pretty interesting, if you like stories of remarkable, complex people.

DADIODADDY|7.27.10 @ 4:59PM|

douche

Citizen Nothing|7.27.10 @ 9:25AM|

Bravo, Bagge. Paterson's story is one that should be known by far more people.
(And isn't it time for a fucking eclipse or something?)

Colin|7.27.10 @ 9:33AM|

Very nice.

Maybe he tackle Rose Wilder and Zora Neale Hurston next.

Peter Bagge|7.27.10 @ 3:48PM|

That is my intention, yes.

Tim|7.27.10 @ 1:58PM|

I live in the moment, and that moment is past.

Tman|7.27.10 @ 1:29PM|

Just reading that Wiki link I saw this-

"In her retirement, Paterson declined to enroll in Social Security."

There's a lady with some principles, that's right.

Mike Laursen|7.27.10 @ 1:58PM|

Yay! Bagge is back!

Atilla|7.27.10 @ 2:41PM|

Who?

Did Neil Gaiman write this. I heard he is writing Ann Rand into the next Dr. Who episode.

Gee, that makes about as much sense as a comic strip about somebody nobody has ever heard of . . . . .

Who is Ann Rand?

|7.27.10 @ 4:06PM|

It would be awesome if Ayn Rand became the new companion for the doctor. He would have his bow tie, and she her cigarette holder.

DADIODADDY|7.27.10 @ 5:00PM|

who would hold the douche bag?

|7.29.10 @ 6:47PM|

Hmmm...doesn't Radley Balko's blog mention that some fellow is searching for the most boring article on the internet?
