Mobile phone sales continued to stall during the first quarter as users increasingly ditched their feature phones for smartphones. Samsung continued to dominate both categories, with Apple landing at No. 2 for smartphone sales, according to Tuesday stats from Gartner.

On mobile phones overall, Samsung was No. 1, growing 13 percent in the first quarter to capture 23.6 percent of the market with more than 100 million units sold. On smartphones, Samsung's share was higher at 30.8 percent with 64.7 million units sold.

"We expect the new Galaxy S 4 to be very popular despite being more of an evolution than a truly revolutionary device compared to the S III," Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner, said in a statement.
