Jailers Tried to Friend Female Inmate on Facebook

One fired, the other resigned, after an investigation into illicit contact

One Oconee County Jail deputy was fired and another resigned following an internal investigation that the pair had "inappropriate communications" with a female inmate, Oconee County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Lee Weems said Monday.

The deputies, Dewayne Powers and Andrea Rogers — both men were hired in 2010 — sent Facebook friend requests to the 23-year-old inmate while she was incarcerated in the jail, Weems said. Powers also sent a text message to the inmate's phone, he said. Additionally, both deputies engaged in face-to-face conversations of a sexual nature with the inmate, according to Weems.
