Patricia Neal, who won an Oscar
for her role in Hud and starred as Dominique in The Fountainhead,
is dead.
Patricia Neal was an Academy Award-winning actress known on screen for her husky voice and the quiet strength she brought to roles in such acclaimed films as Hud (1963) and The Fountainhead (1949) and the sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).
Ultimately the actress, who died of lung cancer Sunday at 84 surrounded by her family at her home in Edgartown, Mass., became just as famous for the tragedies that hit her and her family in the 1960s. That she overcame those misfortunes to once again become an award-winning performer is as much a part of her legacy as are her movie and TV roles.

I finally rented AFITC a year or so ago and watched it late, one night. It's a shame that Andy Griffith ended up gravitating to "nice guy" roles such as Andy Taylor and Ben Matlock, as he showed himself in this movie to be one compelling SOB. Neal was his perfect complement, mesmerizingly attractive as only an intelligent, independent woman can be. I have to say that I liked her better in this film than in any other film of hers that I have seen. In a parallel universe where those debilitating strokes never happened, Patricia Neal died as one of the grand ladies of American theatre. Even in our reality, she cast a large shadow. RIP.

No Time for Sergeants apparently did so well on stage, screen, and TV that there was no turning back for Mr. Griffith.

He was very talented in the few villan roles he did. I saw him once in a television movie called "Pray for the Wildcats" and he was quite convincing, even though I had grown up watching him as Andy Taylor.

It seems that even the Ayn Rand reference can't save this thread. One too many trips to the well, Nick.
