Fun Times with Anti-Semites and Larouchies

Blogger Kevin K. reports from that Clinton dead-ender "PUMA" conference that was derided at length yesterday.

There was scant chatter in the PUMAsphere about the convention following the closing of registration, which was pretty odd considering what a big deal they all made about the announcement of the convention in the first place. It wasn’t until I heard the August 6th broadcast of the “No We Won’t” BlogTalkRadio show that it became clear to me that there was a good reason for the self-imposed silence regarding the convention. Like so many other PUMA initiatives (the poorly-attended RBC “Count Every Vote” rally, retiring Hillary’s debt, etc.), the conference was an epic failure. Listen to this short MP3 clip as alleged “Friends of Hillary” staffer “Paul Johnson” asks the show’s hosts, Sheri Tag and PUMA co-founder Will Bower, how many people will be in DC for the conference. Stammer ... stammer ... time for the next caller! [You can listen to the full show here—Paul’s call starts at the 55 minute mark]

More importantly, Kevin has photos, and they're... disturbing. Among the guests at this confab were Andy Martin and Webster Tarpley. First, a little about Martin, who wrote some of the first chain e-mails about Barack Obama's "Muslim past."

During a 1983 bankruptcy case he referred to a federal judge as a "crooked, slimy Jew, who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race." Martin, who in the past was known as Anthony Martin-Trigona, is one of the most notorious litigants in the history of the United States. He's filed hundreds, possibly thousands, of lawsuits, often directed at judges who have ruled against him, or media outlets that cover him unfavorably. A 1993 opinion by the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, in Atlanta, described these lawsuits as "a cruel and effective weapon against his enemies," and called Martin a "notoriously vexatious and vindictive litigator who has long abused the American legal system." He once even attempted to intervene in the divorce proceedings of a judge who'd ruled against him, petitioning the state court to be appointed as the guardian of the judge's children.

And Webster Tarpley:

In 1986 Tarpley attempted to run on the platform of Lyndon LaRouche in the New York State Democratic Party primary for the U.S. Senate, but was ruled off the ballot because of a defect in his nominating petitions.[2]. He was a frequent host of "The LaRouche Connection", which its producer, LaRouche's Executive Intelligence Review News Service,[3][4] describes as "a news and information cable television program".[5]

Tarpley first gained attention for co-authoring, with Anton Chaitkin, ("history editor of Executive Intelligence Review") a 1992 book on George H.W. Bush, George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography, which was published by Executive Intelligence Review, run by Lyndon LaRouche.[6] He has expounded the "Versailles Thesis" laying the blame for the great wars of the 20th century on intrigues by Britain to retain her dominance.[7] He gained experience as a political operative during his years with the LaRouche movement but broke away in the mid-1990s.

Yep. That's the intellectual artillery of the PUMA movement. I notice this as I see Markos Moulitsas has been contacted by World Net Daily's Jerusalem bureau chief (must... resist... temptation to use scare quotes) who demands to know whether the sneaky blogger forged Obama's birth certificate.

One thing that's often forgotten about the 1992 presidential race is that the character case against Bill Clinton—which had some real factual pegs, like the Gennifer Flowers affair—was distorted and waylayed by deeply silly conspiracy theories. I don't think John McCain's hurting from the wackiness of this subterranean campaign against Obama, but it's protecting the Democrat from the kind of reality-based attacks that could actually wound him.

Update: Andy Martin writes in.

Subject: Demand for retraction and libel notice

I must respectfully request that you run an apology and retraction of your claim that I am an anti-Semite. Quoting court papers 25 years out of context is not responsible journalism or protected activity. I will have to file a lawsuit if the apology and retraction are not forthcoming. I was indeed at the meeting you mentioned, and your report is a gross distortion of what took place. Trying to smear me with out of context associations in my professional capacity as a blogger is libel per se.

    "The distinction between trolls and spammers, hard as it is to explicate to the untrained eye, cleaves along a distinction readily apparent to the experienced.

    The troll is properly a communicative creature, certainly of infirm pedigree but no mere babbling fool. The statements of a troll are coherent, and as such they form the residue of a signal that transports information from their own diseased brain to the theretofore unsuspecting masses.

    The signal of a troll is so designed as to be a blunt instrument of ideological carnage. Yet, it is still a signal. As such it can be isolated from the background, countered by opposed signals, inverted, transformed, for serious or comedic effect. The troll can be made the victim of its own aggression; he comes helpfully packaged with the seeds of his own undoing. The troll can be made into an object of practice, a berserker who tests the defenses of any able mind and aids its linguistic health with its sport.

    This is a species worthy of preservation.

    The spammer, on the other hand, is a nihilist par excellence. Spam, it should be noted, is all noise; there is no signal to speak of. In fact, the very notion of "speech" implies content being transmitted. And while the spammer hides behind the empty formalism of "freedom of speech", when one peels back the face of such indignation, one finds nothing else.

    A Spammer does not give sport, and the only practice it provides is the entirely unhelpful addition its ramblings make to the glut of background noise an earnest web-surfer must pick through to find anything worthy of their time. Lacking coherence, they do not have vulnerability, and do not yield before argument.

    These are the cockroaches of the Internet, and their extermination is quite in order."

    David, what kind of 'protection' do you see Obama getting from this? As far as I can tell the press is still in McCain's camp. Obama could be attacked on civil libertarian concerns such as FISA and his support for enlarging the defense budget, but Obama is far superior on those issues when compared with McCain.

    Or do you mean in the sense that this is distracting the press from further interviews of Wright and the Trinity church and that sort of thing? That doesn't make much sense either. The intended character attack on Obama is that he's a black militant Muslim who's going to overthrow the US government and enslave white women, which is itself deeply silly. The intended character attack on Clinton sex stuff was that he's a womanizer, which was plausible.

    So what do you mean?

    Gawd! I knew Anthony Martin-Trigona (Andy Martin) when he bought the AM property of the radio station where I worked, in the late 70's. He was a nettle and a laughing stock even then, although the anti-semitism wasn't yet apparent. He never did pay for the purchase. His court abuse was well-known even then. There is a court decision from that period (I don't remember whether it was from an appeals court in Illinois or from a federal court) in which he was forbidden from filing future lawsuits, for any purpose, in any court of the jurisdiction. The rules and laws against frivilous lawsuits in at least some jurisdictions are partly due to his a**holery. I can't believe that he's not living under a bridge in a cardboard box somewhere. I wonder what his source of income is. I would reflexively oppose anything which he favors.

  • Andy Martin||

    This article is complete rubbish. Dredging up 25 year-old legal documents and using them out of context to smear someone's work in the present is the worst form of left-wing McCarthysim, and the type of sick mentality that pervades Obama and his fellow travellers at Media Matters.

    Andy Martin

  • ||

    You've gotta admire someone who would accuse his detractors of "McCarthyism" and use the phrase "fellow travellers" in a non-ironic manner in the same sentence.

    And by "admire," I mean "point and laugh at the delusion of."

  • ||

    @ andy martin 2:52pm

    but did you ever pay for the radio station?

  • ||

    @Andy Martin

    It wasn't so much a "smear" as a "schmear".

  • ||

    So, Mr. Frivolous Lawsuit is going to file another..er...frivolous lawsuit? What a surprise.

    The man is obviously not cursed with self-awareness (or a sense of irony).

  • Justen||

    Can you guys post your reply to Mr. Martin? :)

  • ||

    I must respectfully request that you run an apology and retraction of your claim that I am an anti-Semite.

    Where did Weigel call Martin an anti-Semite?

  • JohnG||

    Mr. Martin is correct that it was wrong of you to imply anti-Semitism based simply on a court filing from 1983.

    Had you been more thorough journalists, you would have also cited to the January 20, 2000 decision by the Supreme Court of Florida which barred Mr. Martin from further in forma pauperis lawsuits in the Sunshine State. In its decision, the court quotes from Mr. Martin's brief, in which he states that his most recent cases on appeal before the court were denied because of a new justice who was "'apparently Jewish, thereby validating the public perception that Jewish judges are using their official positions to pervert the law against petitioner...'" (Anthony R. Martin v. State of Florida, case no. SC94012 at page 5, quoting petitioner's brief.)

    This decision was available off his Wikipedia page, and therefore you really should have found it. Shame on you.

    THE PUMAS ARE TOTALLY JUSTIFIED ...

    1. Contrary to what Obamabots say ...
    Obama and Hillary were in a dead heat,
    when the DNC pressured Hillary into not
    only conceding, but campaigning for Obama.
    2. Obama is once again in a dead heat, but now
    with McCain, even though Obamabots act like
    Obama has already won (like they did in the
    primaries against Hillary). So, this means that
    half of the Democrats, and all the Republicans
    (3/4 of America) dIdn't want Obama. Plus, he
    didn't even win the popular vote, and refused a
    revote in Michigan and Florida.
    3. Obama has the thinnest resume in politics, and
    he won state legislature and Senator by
    disqualifications of his opponents, not by earned
    experience, or votes.
    4. Obama's one claim to fame is being a community
    organizer, where he boasts of registering voters.
    Then he took their votes away from them, by
    disqualifying his opponents on technicalities, prior
    to the election.
    5. Obama's mentor of 20 years, was an anti-American
    racist ... not to mention other unsavory associations.
    6. Obama is simply buying the election, since he's
    good at fund raising ... hardly a qualification to be
    President of the United States.
    7. The media never vetted Obama, and they are
    giving him a free ride, plus more than twice the
    print and air time as McCain, as they did against
    Hillary.
    8. 90% of blacks are voting for Obama, because he is
    black, while the campaign gained ground by
    accusing most opponents of racism.
    9. Obamabots were, and are extremely nasty and sarcastic
    towards Hillary supporters, as well as McCain supporters.
    10. Pumas should be applauded for putting country before party ...
    especially a party that did not represent them, and a party
    which highjacked the nomination for Obama.
    11. Obama added insult to injury, when he didn't even consider
    Hillary for V.P. ... nor did he even call her ... even though she
    got 18 million votes in the primary.
    12. Obama and the DNC are now holding a gun to the heads of
    Hillary and Bill Clinton, giving them an ultimatum ... either support
    Obama, or kiss your future in the DNC and politics goodbye.

    P.S. Michelle Obama subjected her two young children to anti-American racists ... Jeremiah Wright, Farrakahn, Pfleiger, and others
    at the black liberation Trinity church in Chicago, for several years. Is this who you want for first lady ... I don't think so !!!
