Check
your local listings for Bill Moyers Journal, but here's the big
item for tonight's show, which is an interview with Ron Paul:
Perhaps the biggest surprise development of the election cycle is the grassroots potency of the Ron Paul (R-TX) campaign. Just days after raising over $4 million on the Internet in one day, the Libertarian Congressman joked during a debate:
"We're struggling to figure out how to spend the money. This country is in a revolution. They're sick and tired of what they're getting, and I happen to be lucky enough to be part of it."
Representative Paul has since broken his own fundraising record, collecting over $6 million in less than 24 hours in mid-December. Although official reports aren't due until January 31st, most analysts agree that Paul likely collected more money than any other Republican candidate in the 4th quarter.
More info here. Look for Moyers to be critical but very sympathetic to many of Paul's issues and concerns.
Is it just me, or does Ron Paul look a bit like Timothy Leary, who raised money for the Texan's LP presidential run in '88?

"Is it just me, or does Ron Paul look a bit like Timothy Leary,
who raised money for the Texan's LP presidential run in '88?"
Interesting observation. I've made it before myself. He does look
like Leary. I think he especially looks like Leary in the Morton
Downey show. Take a look at the clip.
The liberal media are at it again! Moyers is trying to sink Ron Paul by giving him exposure just before the NH primary. The only way Ron Paul is going to win in NH is by staying under the radar, and the libs know it. The cunning bastards!
Remember the old saying "A fool and his money are soon parted"? The Internet has allowed Ron Paul to identify thousands of fools. Don't think others won't steal the secret. Damn that Bill Moyers!
Actually, Ron Paul looks like somebody who might offer his flock some lethal Koolaid. But looks aren't everything.
In honor of Edward's repetitive, and boringly predictable snarking, I hereby pledge another $50 to Ron Paul.
It's nice to see someone acknowledging his existence. The NY Times managed to never mention that he got 10% of the vote, which I find absolutely nuts. That's a pretty big piece of the pie to totally ignore.
Man, does anyone in the media know the difference between big-L
and small-l libertarianism? They must have that Dondero
disease.
You know, the one that states that because you walked 200 miles in
a blizzard to stand on a corner in Nebraska holding a clipboard for
the Libertarian Party means you are the standard bearer for all
that is libertarian.
Thanks, Fools, but I haven't sent him a penny.
Ask your mommy if you can break open the piggy bank. But wait till
she finishes up with the john.
Jorgen,
This morning on MPR, when recapping the Republican vote, they
skipped right over Paul to note that Giuliani finished way back in
6th.
Is it just me, or does Ron Paul look a bit like Timothy Leary, who raised money for the Texan's LP presidential run in '88?
Holy Crap! I'd never noticed it and I've met Dr. Leary. I will now
change my name to Captain Oblivious.
Look for Moyers to be critical but very sympathetic to many
of Paul's issues and concerns.
Moyers is by far a bigger asshole then O'rielly is yet somehow i do
not expect as many hoots from the back row here as Bill O. would
get.
Just a reminder...Moyers is the Johnson adviser who outed
homosexuals in the Goldwater campaign.

Let me rephrase my comment about the back row "here at Reason I
expect conservatives who are sympathetic to libertarians to be
viewed as hostile and buffoons while socialists who are sympathetic
to libertarians will be given a free pass"
I will admit that i prefer the format used by Moyers (Cspan-esqe?)
but the bias shown here is just plain shitty.
joshua corning,
You're probably right in saying that Moyers is just as much an
asshole as O'Reilly. The difference is that Moyers' assholishness
isn't as visible during his interviews.
O'Reilly acts like a schoolyard bully on his show.
Ron Paul received mid teens in East Iowa....Watch out in NH....I bet you see 20'%+.....the establishment and major media outlets won't know what to say since they have totally ignored from even speaking his name. I saw a pie chart on CNN that showed all the other canidates and a big grey patch where Paul votes were....I'm going to enjoy this and I'm a moderate republican....I believe its time to real this thing in....lets get the dollar back down and out of Iraq and other places...why are these radical christians running our government?
Edward,
could you reach over the edge of your bed and pull that cord?
You're brain dead, son. It is time you realized it and it is time
you did the right thing.
The NY Times managed to never mention that he got 10% of the
vote, which I find absolutely nuts. That's a pretty big piece of
the pie to totally ignore.
You must not have been watching CNN. They actually had a pie chart,
and left out Ron's slice (along with Rudy's sliver and Hunter's
crumbs) -- it was just a gray slot that was conspicuously
missing.
Their Democratic pie showed Richardson's 2% sliver, though.
Jamie and alan,
Surely you can do better than that. Such childish insults. When
you're wetting your pants over a fringe loser and keeping it up
after a fifth-place showing, you need a thick skin and/or a quick
wit. Maybe you should work on the skin part.
Go fuck your inflatable Ron Paul doll, Bingo. It's the most satisfaction you'll ever get out of his candidacy.
"This country is in a revolution. They're sick and tired of what
they're getting, and I happen to be lucky enough to be part of
it."
What an asshole!
This is the first time I've come out. Ron Paul gave me the courage to do it. Go Ron Paul! Is there really an inflatable Ron Paul doll?
Bingo,
Why don't you start a Gays for Ron Paul club? Your slogan could be
"Ron Paul sucks, and so do we!"
is there some alternative universe where idiots who troll website forums are considered winners in life? If that is the case, please get your ass back there.
Bingo,
You should know...
Same-Sex Marriage/Civil Unions: Ron Paul opposes same-sex marriage,
but does not support a federal amendment to define marriage as only
between a man and a woman.
Gay and Lesbian Adoption: Ron Paul voted to support a ban of gay
adoptions in Washington, DC in
alan,
I think you should apologize to Bingo anyway. He might have thought
you were referring to him. It takes a lot of courage for a
homosexual to come out of the closet
It's okay Edward, I'll find a way to make our passion known to
the world, even if we can't have it recognized by the Feds...
~True love will conquer all~
I wish there was an "ignore" feature on this message board... Say, for instance, that I knew what one person would type over and over and over. I could enter the name and click "ignore." Then magically, all those posts would be gone from my screen. Not to say that feature would be used here. I mean, who on this board says anything stupid, right?
I gave the Ron Paul campaign $50 in November, and $100 in
December. I will give $200 this month. At that rate of progression,
and if my bonuses arrive when they should, I'll be maxed out in
April.
Edward, We ain't going away and now that we've found each other on
Meetup.com, we will be a force to contend with. I'm organizing a
coup of my local Republican party. We already have more members in
our RP Meetup group than attend the Republican meetings.
This Goldwater Republican is taking back his party!
Is it just me, or does Ron Paul look a bit like Timothy
Leary, who raised money for the Texan's LP presidential run in
'88?
Holy crap, I thought I was the only one who noticed a slight
resemblance. It's really apparent here.
Hey Edtard, when Bingo's done with you give me a call. I'll break you down like a shotgun and clean your barrel.
If only Ron Paul would drop the nice guy image and tear Moyers a new asshole for his support of LBJ's foreign policy (i.e. war) and Great Society programs. Bush's continuation and expansion of these boondoggles is bankrupting the country and has us poised on the brink of hyper inflation and recession, aka stagflation.
Hey NoStar, there's a PCO meeting tomorrow in my neck of the
woods. Unfortunately I can't make it. It's like at 9:30am and I
have to work. Hopefully someone will fill me in.
How's the battle where you are?
Nick:
You did an incredible job jousting with Bill O'Reilly the other
day!!
Keep up the great work!

Sage, My PCO meeting was last night.
We have more members in our local RP meetup group than we have
PCO's and party members at that meeting. With good canvasing, I
think we can have a coup. There are already some other PCO's who
are Paul supporters or Paul friendly.

Do you people read, or what?
The economy is in deep trouble. The housing market is crashing.
There is a global recession coming. NYU and IMF economist Nouriel
Roubini has been predicting this for months. And today, of course,
the Dow dropped -256 points, the NASDAQ had its worst day since
Sept 17, 2001, and unemployment skyrocketed.

For those who are not paying attention, Ron Paul is the best thing
that could happen to the American economy. His policies will make
ensure the economy rebounds, and the monster recession will be much
less painful. He will get out Iraq, and will defend our own land. I
am no blowhard, please educate yourselves on economics.
We are going into a monster recession. The only one talking about
this is Ron Paul.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that the example
page of "Liv" is probably the most unprofessional looking

I appreciate the intent but good lord put some polish on the damn

Also Liv has a hot ass.
The lady that Moyers have on is speaking very well of (1) libertarians (the "emerging 3rd party"), (2) independents, and (3) Ron Paul!
Ron Paul on PBS is potentially talking to a lot of left wingers who are really more left anarchists fed up with big government. There may be some conversions.
Ali, we don't need any more leftwing Anarchists in our
libertarian movement. We've got way, way, way too many of them
right now. If anything, we need to be telling these leftwing
Anarchists to take a hike, and leave us real Goldwaterite
libertarians alone.
They're the ones destroying our movement. Them and the Larouchie
conspiratorialists, and the Moveon.org infiltrators.
Ali, I think its pretty interesting she thinks libertarians are
an emerging third party. It doesn't seem like the Evangelical base
(there's no denying they are the base now) is very conservative. A
lot of conservatives are coming to terms with the fact that the
Republican party is not going to revert to small-government
conservatism anytime soon.
Historically though, the Libertarian Party has been awful.
Additionally, most people vote D or R or not at all, third parties
aren't viewed as a viable option. I don't know if we're seeing an
emerging third party as much as we are seeing the Republican Party
fracture and become politically impotent.
I love this bit about libertarianism being anti-racist. I hope that a lot of people on the left are noww listening.
A lot of conservatives are coming to terms with the fact
that the Republican party is not going to revert to
small-government conservatism anytime soon.
I am "conservative" only in the fiscal sense, but I agree with
these other conservatives (whichever way one defines them) that the
repugs are, well, repugnant with their bloated spending and
fascistic attitudes.
Historically though, the Libertarian Party has been
awful.
I am still new to much of the politics and the history of that and
all. But it seems that the LP started well, but quickly acquired
bad reputation. What matters are the ideas. I do not care about
parties and neither should libertarians. They should instead stand
up for their ideals and, eventually, a structure of a party will
emerge naturally. I am a firm believer in emergent behaviors and
institutions.
Awww...Peter Pan Kucinich filed a complaint with the FCC about being left out of ABC's Saturday Democratic debate.
Good interview. I am all energized again after some of the attacks and concerns the campaign has had recently.
Awww...Peter Pan Kucinich filed a complaint with the FCC
about being left out of ABC's Saturday Democratic
debate.
He goes and cries to the very government institutions that Fox and
ABC et al control. Looser!
Nostar,
Big talk. Nobody will remember Ron Paul's name in a year. There
just aren't enough of you loons out there to elect one of your own.
But keep sending money. It's good for the economy.
Yeah!! Us real Mainstream Libertarians don't need lefties!!! We (actually, just me) need more hookers!! Ever since Dr. No fired me, I haven't been able to afford the company of women anymore.
Hey Fake Dondero, you should try the company of...well, I was going to say "men," but you could try Edtard instead.
Goldwaterite libertarians
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
You're so far from a Goldwaterite, I could piss on his grave and
you couldn't find the wet spot with a divining rod from
space.
Fuck-dero, you moron.

Can't you be so courteous as to add the Jews? And the
Freemasons?

It's because THEY TURK AR JOBBS!
Unfortunately Ron Paul's campaign seems to be working hard to
reinforce that particular brand of idiocy.
What an interview tonight. I think that might be the best interview of I've seen Ron Paul give. He covered so many great things and was very eloquent. And Bill Moyers gave him plenty of time to speak and asked relevant, respectful questions. Pretty much the opposite of Tim Russert.
Ben,
Ditto. I hope many people watched it tonight. I watched here in
Boston and I believe that many Granite Staters do follow PBS. They
are, after all, independent thinkers.
I happen to have met both Drs. Paul & Leary -- I think it
was the same year -- and never noticed a resemblance. But I'm bad
with people -- faces and all the rest.
They should instead stand up for their ideals and, eventually, a structure of a party will emerge naturally.
Evidence?
Thanks Ali.
Toward the end of Season 3, there is a scene in Lost where Ben
takes John to a house in the forest where Jacob lives, introducing
him to an empty chair, where supposedly Jacob is sitting. As John
vents his anger at the charade, he is treated to a poltergeist show
and he thinks he hears Jacob's voice, asking for help.
Like at Jacob's place, once in a whole a bunch of stuff flies
around the room here at H & R, and you think Edward might have
said something to you. But the chair remains empty.
And, in other nukes (Oh, Guy Montag, you will like this):
Don Garlits endorses Ron
Paul.
Real Men drive big fat nitro burning American Vee-Eights down

be if it had a choice (drag racing is the red wine of auto racing).
Okay, maybe drag racing is the Marlboro Red and Bud Lite of car
racing. Wait, that's Nascar.
Excellent interview. I even had the stomach to watch Kucinich's
interview, too, and it was very instructive to see the similarities
of their "problems" in getting respected by the media while at the
same time seeing how completely opposite their attitudes toward
remedying it were.
It was like a liberty vs. authority introductory lesson.
I think my fiancee (someone who would have been much more inclined
to vote for Kucinich or Hillary once upon a time due to
"progressiveness) nodded so much in response to Paul's answers that
she may be converted. She had little good to say about Kucinich's
segment, citing the differences in attitudes.
I love how Bill Moyers kept trying to get Ron Paul to say that
everything would be peaches and cream if only the national media
was not controlled by 5 corporations. RP did a good job diverting
the discussion away from becoming a "the media won't pay attention
to me" self-pityfest.
If the marketing guys at Fox or CNN ever figure out that Ron Paul
appeals to a young and media-hungry demographic, the profit motive
will take care of the rest.
Moyers didn't do any homework for the Ron Paul interview. He accepted Ron Paul as a libertarian but didn't ask him any questions about his unlibertarian position on immigration. He accepted the notion that Ron Paul is a "strict constitutionalist" but didn't ask anything about Paul's publsished misrepresentations of and lies about the Constitution. Talk about getting a free pass. Moyers throws more soft balls than a softball pitcher with a broken arm.
Why Edward, that wasn't snarky at all. You feeling all
right?
But links or citations would be helpful.
The rest of us can read the constitution too.
Jesus Christ, Edward. You've really outdone yourself in this thread. Let me ask you a serious (and I do mean serious) question: what is it about Ron Paul that pisses you off to such onanistic skies? (And I ask this as one who's not voting for Paul.)
They're the ones destroying our movement. Them and the
Larouchie conspiratorialists, and the Moveon.org
infiltrators.
Ya! Lets grow this Libertarian movement by excluding
people!!!
Truly fucking brilliant Eric.
I just watched the entire interview on YouTube (it was in 3
parts) and I thought it was his best interview that I'd seen in
this campaign (the Jay Leno one was good, but too short and a bit
whimsical).
I think Moyers' real reason for giving the exposure to RP, however,
is because he's hoping RP will be a third-party spoiler in the
general election. He even asks him why he stays with the Republican
party.
what is it about Ron Paul that pisses you off to such
onanistic skies?
I know the answer to this one. He first appeared in a thread about
John Edwards' $400 haircut, and was so offended that someone would
point it out. At the same time, he noticed that many folks on this
blog like Paul...viola, a troll is born.
NAL,
To be honest, token African-American Wendell Goler of Fox News
famously asked him the same question in the SC debate (which
eventually led to the Paul-Giuliani exchange).
Too bad Moyers hadn't read this before his softball
interview:
The notion of a rigid separation between church and state has no
basis in either the text of the Constitution or the writings of our
Founding Fathers. On the contrary, our Founders' political views
were strongly informed by their religious beliefs. Certainly the
drafters of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution,
both replete with references to God, would be aghast at the federal
government's hostility to religion.-Ron Paul "The War on
religion"
"It is from the Bible that man has learned cruelty, rapine, and
murder; for the belief of a cruel God makes a cruel man." --Thomas
Paine "An Answer To A Friend Regarding The Age Of Reason," The
Prospect, 12 April 1804
Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the
introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and
imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards
uniformity.--Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782
Any modern-day viable institution or social/political structure.
Except political parties, or at least significant ones. Political
parties emerge and sustain themselves from a very different dynamic
from that of persons standing up for their ideals.
Robert-
I guess, my point is that, it seems to me (and I am a bit new to
all the history), that "libertarianism" was thought of as this
monolith that unites people under the banner of "liberty". If true,
a social entity called "libertarians" could have emerged. But, with
time, it turned out the "liberty" may also possess conflicting
views and is certainly far from a monolith. We have staunch pro-war
libertarians, staunch anti-war libertarians (both claiming to
represent and defend true libertarianism), staunch pro-choice and
fewer, but legitimate, pro-life libertarians (Ron Paul being one).
I guess, I am comparing the cosmo-libertarians and the
paleolibertarians. Anyhow, my point is that there is still not a
cohesive body of people, out of which would emerge a political
structure that would be acceptable by the mainstream.
... and, with that said, the creation of the LP was certainly an important step for libertarians (regardless of their tendencies), but has not been a viable political structure (and I doubt it will).
Don Garlits endorses Ron Paul.

That will require an extremely rich suppporter with superior
executive skills.
The above sounds so elitist, I almost didn't post it. But I think
it's correct, so there it is.
That will require an extremely rich suppporter with superior
executive skills.
Or a president. ;-)
Dondero,
Us mainstream libertarians have been trying for a long time to get
Neocons like you to stop calling yourself a libertarian. You
confuse people when youdo so. When you call yourself a libertarian
they think we're a bunch of LaRouche freaks.
To be honest, token African-American Wendell Goler of Fox
News famously asked him the same question in the SC debate (which
eventually led to the Paul-Giuliani exchange).
Point taken. I guess when you have a candidate with the money and
the supporters of Ron Paul (and history of running Libertarian),
it's a fair question for anyone to ask. However, I can't help but
think that a 3rd-party run by Ron Paul would be a wet dream for the
Dems. They already have the advantage in the general election
(according to the pundits (and possibly polls...I'm too lazy to
look it up), anyway), but that would seal their win.
Edward:
