Cuban Spanish and Mexican Spanish

Enough of this little gotcha on how George "I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English" Bush had Jon Secada sing the national anthem in Spanish during his first inaugural's "Celebrating America's Spirit Together" event in 2001.

Secada is Cuban. Cubans can sing the anthem in Spanish if they want, just like they can wash up in Florida and be welcomed by the State Department, rather than rounded up by immigration. Mexicans, on the hand, cannot. Respect the law people.

As for reports that Bush himself sang the anthem in Spanish while campaigning for governor in Texas in 1999, I ask you which is more likely, that George Bush forgot the words and was just mumbling along and it kinda sounded Spanish, or that George Bush knows an entire other language besides English?

His brother Jeb! is fluent in Spanish, although Jeb! is generally less of a mouth breathing moron than Dupya in a lot of ways. (This is not an endorsement of Jeb!, etc., etc.)

I would say "lighten up", Jamie.

I don't see reason staffers throwing around ad hominems on a regular basis, and c'mon, it's a rather long-running joke about Bush II's intelligence, or lack thereof. Also, we're on a libertarian blog, libertarianism seems to attract conspiracy theorists, so spinning it that it's really just Bush II being stupid, I think it's kinda funny.

Finally, the last line "Don't let the MSM confuse you." says it all...it's supposed to be funny.

How do you define "very well?" To me, speaking a language "very well" means being able to have an impromptu conversation in it. If you have an example of Bush doing this, I'd appreciate a link.

Who CARES about ANY anthem? Anthems are paeans to...The State!!! Here I am, reading about LIBERTARIANS who worry about WHAT LANGUAGE they should use to WORSHIP THE STATE??? WTF? Why not worry over 'An Ode to Private Property' or something as relevant. "Patriotism is the refuge of scoundrels"...where did I hear that? Regards.

Was John Secada's rendition of the anthem a fairly true translation? While I disagree with our president on every issue, and I could care less about things like the anthem, and the pledge, I think the people who oppose this most recent "mexican american" version of the anthem, oppose it because there were lyric changes. So unless Mr. Secada sang a version with changed lyrics, this is not an apples to apples comparison.
