Rat Study Says Atkins Diet OK

OK.OK. I know it's just a rat study, but some French researchers find that feeding rats a high protein--low carb diet improves their health by a number of measures. To wit:

"This unique long-term study found that in male rats, a protein intake of three times the requirements did not produce any adverse effects on the renal and hepatic functions, on oxidative stress or on the calcium balance. On the contrary, exchanging carbohydrates for proteins was beneficial regarding body composition, basal triglycerides, glucose, leptin, and insulin plasma concentrations."

Meanwhile, a mouse study says that the Atkins diet could make you infertile. So is that choice-a long healthy life versus kids?

I am a vegetarian... however, I'm having extremely good results with vegetarian meat substitutes. Maybe it's time to take another look at Atkins... last time I tried it it made me sick but you know, you have to repeat results, don't you.

OK, so I LIKE tofu. So sue me. :)

Atkins or no, the choice has always been a healthy life vs. having kids.

Mice and Rats.

When I first saw the story about the infertility study, I knew it wouldnt be long before the headlines started to appear "Atkins makes you Infertile". No. Atkins makes mice slightly less fertile. It may be useful for looking at the way certain proteins operate, but thats about it.

You don't need to be in the Atkins diet to enjoy a long healthy life without kids. That's been the cause-and-effect all along.

I remember reading a while back that a woman who has less than a certain amount of fat will not release an egg each month, making pregnancy impossible. Maybe that had something to do with it?
