The Trickle That Exploded
A Kansas creek gets a new name:
What used to be the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Tributary has become Burroughs Creek, honoring the memory of Beat author William S. Burroughs, who spent the last years of his life in Lawrence.
Burroughs, an associate of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and other Beat writers, died in 1997 at 83. He's best-known for his novel "Naked Lunch."
The recommendation to rename the creek, which runs near Burroughs' former Lawrence residence, was made last fall by the Brook Creek Neighborhood Association.
Grover Norquist wanted to call it "Reagan River," but he was overruled.
