June Carter Cash, RIP

Pretty amazing that she'd go first: She sounded a lot healthier than Johnny on the last record. Anyway, The Man In Black is now a widower. Obits from AP, E! Online, and The New York Times.

Who would have thought Johnny, the pill popping wild man, would outlive June, the clean living angel that straightened him out. Go figure.

I saw her play live with her husband many years ago. She was terrific. To quote the anonymous young man who approached the couple in Johnny's autobiography: "Mrs. Cash, you kick ass."

It's a sad loss.

No mention of Robert Stack's passing on the blog yet today. Hop to it, someone.

Damn! Another one of the good 'uns is gone...

Lefty,

She may have been "clean living" compared to Johnny, but all that handling snakes and drinking poison finally caught up with her.

Yikes! I didn't know that. Different strokes?

I saw a tribute of June and Johnny playing at Folsom Prison. The camera played on the faces of some prisoners in the autdience. Sheer joy. wide open eyes and mouths, glowing, singing along.

Nobody since Woody Guthrie could honestly talk about prison and scratching for a living and make iit heroic like they did.
