Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) says he understands how Trent Lott may have misspoke when Lott praised the 1948 Dixiecrat ticket.
Let's cut to the chase. How much is this understanding gonna cost us? New Department of Homeland Security HQ, Rapid City? Now boarding, direct Concorde service, Aberdeen to Paris?
Lott's original, most venal sin was never meeting a political problem that pork couldn't fix.

Believe me, my friend, the Democrats love having Lott lead the Senate Republicans. It's easy for fundraisers to demonize them when they're led by Satan himself.
