Weed Country: Pot Grower Mike Boutin on Discovery Channel's Newest Reality Show

"They shoot people and they're not culpable at all, and it has to stop," says Weed Country's Mike Boutin. Featured on Discovery Channel's new show, Boutin grows marijuana in the emerald triangle and is constantly faced with the threat of federal prosecution.

Boutin considers himself a vigilante, fighting back against drug prohibition. "I really didn't want to live in a world where they haul people off to jail for using a substance that's safter than alcohol" says Boutin.

ReasonTV's Tracy Oppenheimer talked with Boutin about the state of the marijuana industry today and his role on the show. Weed Country premieres this Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 10 pm on Discovery Channel.

About 7 minutes.

Produced by Tracy Oppenheimer; Shot by Alex Manning and Zach Weissmueller.

    OT: As we ask ourselves what weapons can be regulated under 2a, media investigates if trained fighters might be classified as deadly weapons:

    A punch turned deadly on an Oak Harbor street. On Wednesday at 5, KIRO 7 investigates if trained fighters should be considered deadly weapons.

    Fighters are no longer allowed in schools, government buildings or churches...that is what is next!

    Do we grandfather in the existing trained fighters or will it be plan B:

    (1) puck their eyes out

    (2) amputate their hands and feet

    (3) lobotomy

    Damn, it's frustrating when someone who has seen how bad the WoD is only argues against it rubbing up against his hobby horse.

    "I really didn't want to live in a world where they haul people off to jail for using a substance that's safter than alcohol" says Boutin.

    Don't worry, all levels of government are starting to work on this alcohol thing, too.

    Interesting interview.

    A sheriff featured in one of the episodes is one of a group of CA sheriffs who consider themselves Constitutional Sheriffs or something like that. Tea Party groups support him because he's talking big about standing up to the federal agencies like the Dept. of Interior, Forest Service and EPA in an effort to protect water rights.

    But as you can see from the show, the sheriff favors prohibition when it comes to marijuana.

    Mr. Boutin's iceberg analogy (metaphor?) is spot-on, though.

    Some of the law enforcement in this series are driven by the absolutism replete in modern American exceptionalism. America is somehow no longer great because of marijuana. America is being destroyed by the evil cannabis therefore they must heavily arm and violently protect their chosen form of society from the evil green monsters.

    The tenor of their legalistic fervor is propelled by a dangerous faith which thrives in the swamp of zero accountability.

    These are men and women who are emboldened on expressions of tyranny. They live, eat, and breathe a racked shallow indignation reinforced with a centuries-old brutality justified through shallow laws and shallow ethics and shallow mentalities.

    I look at these people and see lurking within their zealous visages the executioners and torturers of the middle ages, Nazi SS officers, the junta of Pinochet, and the Khmer Rouge soldiers of Pol Pot.

    The only difference between most of American law enforcement and dictatorship brutality is a few remaining legal hurdles and the constitution. Remove this threadbare citizen protection and it wouldn't be but a few short months and the drug war would result in the American killing fields starting in The Emerald Triangle. And, more than likely, most citizens would sit idly by as the mass murder was spun as a way to keep women and children safe.

    Excellent reporting. The only way to stop the crime centered around pot, is to decriminalize it.

  • joebanana||

    Or abolish this tyrannical form of government. It has "become destructive to those ends".

  • joebanana||

    As is the pattern with the US government, the "war on drugs" is based on lies, falsehoods, propaganda, lobbyists BS, and governmental overreach. Outlawing a flower is just silly. Marijuana is an herb, not a "drug". It may alter your conscience state, but so do many foods, especially if you have allergies to certain food products. Some foods can make you drowsy, or if your drowsy, can wake you up. The US government doesn't control what I ingest. As long as I cause no harm to persons or property, they have no jurisdiction. The US government has become evil and oppressive. They're the biggest threat to life, liberty, and freedom that we've ever faced.
