From the October 2004 issue
"We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
-- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) on tax policy at a fundraiser for Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), quoted by the Associated Press, June 28
"I would argue that the future of our country hangs in the balance because the future of marriage hangs in the balance. Isn't that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?"
-- Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) on the Federal Marriage Amendment, shortly before its defeat, quoted by the Associated Press, July 14
For plenty of journalists, objectivity means not an effort to get at the truth but the process of quoting a spokesman on either side of every issue. Fortunately, the folks at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center are a bit old-fashioned: At FactCheck.org, they scrutinize the claims made by presidential campaigns and partisan groups, sorting fact from fiction. So far, they haven't revealed a bias of their own: They've pointed out a series of misleading claims from the Bush camp about John Kerry's voting record but also defended the president's against attacks from environmental groups.
