State Rep. Marty Walsh Elected Mayor of Boston

Will replace Menino

State Rep. Marty Walsh defeated City Councilor John Connolly on Tuesday to become the next mayor of Boston, winning the coveted job to replace 20-year Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

Walsh, in an interview Monday, said his first goal will be getting his transition team in place. Once he takes office, he said the big issues for him will be "education, economic development around public safety and creating more opportunities to making sure our seniors feel safe."

Asked Monday about his comeback, from trailing in the polls to a potential victory, Walsh said it was a combination of his own desire to be mayor and diehard support. "I have people who quit their job to support my candidacy," Walsh said.
