New Chinese Leaders Pledge Growth

Xi Jinping, a son of the communist aristocracy, has been handed uncontested authority to lead the world's most populous nation through the next decade.

In a break from previous transitions, Mr Xi, 59, yesterday took control of the world's largest army at the same time as being ''elected'' general secretary of the world's most powerful political organisation.
